I am a 28 year old male and being treated for schizophrenia since may 2012. Initially started on tablets resperidone for a year thereafter switched over to invega sustena. I had to quit my job before I started medication. My positive symptoms disappeared around three months after starting treatment and the negative symptoms almost completely gone recently when I joined a job for six months staying away from home in a foreign land. I feel quite confident and well. During the past period I continued to drink moderately (around 120ml, two to three times a week), and smoke around 5-8 cigarettes a day. When can I stop taking medication?

I am amazed at your response to the treatment. You are doing unusually well and you must keep it up. Alcohol and smoking are really bad for you even in small quantities. I am concerned that you are not into therapy in conjunction with the medication. You will need this type of monitoring and help and they can tell you about the cessation of medicines. Schizophrenia needs long term treatment. Long term treatment has long term side effects. Usually they are NOT fatal. There are drugs that pass through liver, making it work more. But there are drugs that does not pass through liver, like Paliperidone. It is given during jaundice period. The doctor treating your friend knows about the drugs and its long term side effects. Dear sir, my mother is suffering from schizophrenia from 15 years, we are giving senorm la 50 mg from 6 years 1dose in 45 days but now reduced it to per month as per her requirement. I want to ask can we give her a dose in 20 days as she suffer from the disease even we are giving dose monthly? Is there any side effect? Any other suggestion from your side please.

It is nice of you to continue to treat your mother for many years. Schizophrenia is a lifelong disorder just like diabetes or high BP. So your mother needs lifelong treatment. Senorm LA is a better way to be sure that she takes the drug regularly. It usually acts for 2-4 weeks. You can NOT give as per requirement. If she develops any positive symptoms like hallucination or delusion, it is difficult to go with rehabilitation process (making her a useful person in family/society)...more
