Mild hiatal hernia if symptomatic and troublesome then medicine should be tried if still no response then surgery is done .so as you say you feel pain than its not recommended to stop medicine but you can try changing your food habits - like small frequent meals, avoiding oil, spice, alcohol, smoking etc.

The treatment advised to you seems reasonable. You can add high fibre diet like green leafy vegetables and fruits, lots of water intake and increase in physical activities. Use the liquid paraffin before going for defecation. It's job is to lubricate the anus. Please don't expect immediate relief. Regards.
