Dear lybrate user,
it is said that pcod occurs due to insulin resistance in the body. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. Insulin resistance also hampers normal functioning of ovaries resulting in high level of androgens (male hormones). Melmet i. E metformin is prescribed to correct the insulin resistance in the body to overcome the pcod related problems.

The medicine does not increase insulin levels in the body, but instead lessens the amount of sugar the body produces and absorbs. As it lowers glucose production in the liver, metformin also lowers blood sugar by increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin.
But you should not take any medicine without doctor's advise as it may be harmful.
Let's connect over a call so that we can discuss your concern in details and make a suitable treatment plan for you.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query.
It would have been better if you had mentioned your current fasting and PP glucose levels, because without looking at that, difficult to give any opinion. Usually Melmet (metformin) should be fine. Thanks.

Melmet is not a drug for pcos, contrary to popular belief.
If you don’t have sugar problem, you don’t need melmet.
Rather lose your weight if you are overweight and you will need hormone pills.

In pt of pcod there is increased insulin resistance ,metformin being a insulin sensitizer drug decreases the insulin resistance, it also helps in reducing wt and in ovulation. Total dose is 1500 mg taken in 2 or 3 divided doses.
Lifestyle changes for wt reduction should also be adopted.

Hi lybrate-user, you have not mentioned your glycemic status with twice daily dose of metformin. Check your tsh level and 25 (oh) vitamin d level. Consult your physician / diabetologist for further management.

Please don`t increase dose of medicine without consulting. Better you add other medicine tab glimipyride 1 mg 2 times before food. Or you take combination, tab gluformin g 1 two times before food. I like to advice for self measurement of sugar by glucometer, 3 times a day and inform after 7 days.

Mr. lybrate-user, thanks for the query.
I have seen the given details. With hba1c% 6.8 % you are having diabetes. Pre-diabetic condition is considered when hba1c% is between 5.9 to 6.4%.hba1c% > 6.5% is diabetes.
Since you are on metformin 1000 mg twice a day, there is a possibility of getting its side-effects like repeated loos motions and other gastrointestinal symptoms also.
In the information there is no mention of your age, fasting and pp glucose levels also. Thanks.
