Bad effects or not you have to continue with it I do not understand why all the patients are talking only about bad effects and the relief it them if you want the disease to be cured you need the meds no doctor is fond of giving harmful meds to people.

In case of epilepsy since you are on meds for 3 years, if the seizures are completely controlled and eeg is normal, a trial of gradual taper of medicines can be given. But always taper medicines after consulting your neurologist. And there is always a chance of recurrence so that risk has to be borne in mind.

Your doctor is in right position to tell you about treatment part as it depends on many factors ( history, duration of illness, number is episodes, treatment response, family history etc.) and i am sure he must have evaluated you properly in detail before giving you this suggestion.

Antiepileptics should not be stopped without neurologist advise. Epilepsy is excessive electrical activity in the brain and valproic acid controls it. If you get seizures when you stop it, definitely it is very much required. Do not keep worrying about this, many famous people including Jonty Rhodes in cricket had epilepsy, just take the tablet and carry on with your other aspects of life. All the best.
