They are different type of drugs and in your case need both to be taken. Keep seeing your neurologist every 3 months he will recognise side effects like weight gain etc. Also read the instructions with the packet it will tell you side effects.

If there is no other option he can tell like that, since other options are there and he is not willing to use them, you have no other option other than to change the neuro.
