Regular toothpastes remove plaque n makes your teeth clean whereas whitening toothpastes contain certain tooth whitening agents which whiten your teeth slowly over a period of 2 wks to 2 months. These whitening agents may cause sensitivity in few individuals n wen unbearable it is advised to discontinue.
Whitening toothpastes donot give pearly white teeth for everybody but only lightens one's teeth by 1-2 shade only.

The simplest method of removing minor surface stains is polishing, or micro-abrasion if staining is more intrinsic. Provided that your discolouration is not due to inadequate enamel exposing the dentin, tooth whitening (bleaching) is often the most effective treatment for yellow stained teeth. Whitening toothpastes helps temporarily, to get stains removed from teeth take lemon juice in a spoon, dip brush or you can apply with fingertip also, apply over the stained teeth, keep for a minute and the rinse with water. It removes stain and as it contains citric acid/vit c which keeps teeth strong. This procedure should be done twice a week not more.

1. A change in the external tooth layer (enamel) which mainly maintains the structure and integrity of the tooth which can be caused due to wear during eating or an acidic diet.
