Strong Bones - How To Maintain Them?

Strong Bones - How To Maintain Them?

Bones are quite literally the support system of the body, so it's super important to keep them strong and healthy. Strength is not a goal you achieve in a day, week or month. It is a way more rigorous process that has to go on for years. The growing age of your life matters the most; it is at this point that you can make your bones strong. Bone strength should also be maintained in certain ways. Child or adult, you must aim for both mental and physical strength.

Here are some tips to make deposits in your bone bank for a healthier future.

  1. Know your family history - As with many medical conditions, family history is a key indicator of bone health. Those with a parent or sibling who has or had osteoporosis are more likely to develop it. So, how's your bone density, Grandma? might seem like an awkward question at Thanksgiving dinner, but ask anyway before she passes the gravy.

  2. Boost calcium consumption - When most people think bones, they think calcium. This mineral is essential for the proper development of teeth and bones. But calcium isn't the end-all, be-all bone loss cure. The key might be to help the body absorb calcium by pairing calcium-rich foods with those high in vitamin D. Foods that are good sources of calcium include yogurt, cheese, milk, spinach and collard greens.

  3. Don't forget the vitamin D - Where there's calcium, there must be vitamin D: the two works together to help the body absorb bone-boosting calcium. Boost vitamin D consumption by munching on shrimp, fortified foods like cereal and orange juice, sardines, eggs (in the yolks) and tuna, or opt for a vitamin D supplement. The body also produces vitamin D when exposed to the sun - 10 to 15 minutes of exposure three times per week will do. Vitamin D's importance to bone health has been proven in studies on "seasonal bone loss"; - elderly people can lose more bone mass during the winter because of lack of sun exposure.

  4. Make exercise a priority - Seriously regular exercise is to keep a number of health issues at bay, and bone health is no exception. In fact, living a sedentary lifestyle is considered a risk factor for osteoporosis. What type of exercise is most effective? Weight-bearing exercises like running, walking, jumping rope, skiing and stair climbing keep bones strongest.

  5. Consume less caffeine - Caffeine does have some health benefits, but unfortunately not for our bones. Too much of it can interfere with the body's ability to absorb calcium. Drinking more than two cups of coffee per day accelerated bone loss in subjects who also didn't consume enough calcium. Also, more than 18 ounces of coffee per day can accelerate bone loss by negatively interacting with vitamin D. So enjoy the java, but keep it in moderation and consume enough calcium, too.

  6. Quit smoking - Here's yet another reason to lose the cigarettes: multiple studies have shown that smoking can prevent the body from efficiently absorbing calcium, decreasing bone mass.

Low Carb Diet - Know Risks Of It!

Low Carb Diet - Know Risks Of It!

A low-carb diet limits the amount of carbohydrates you consume daily. Carbohydrates are the fibres, starches, and sugar found in vegetables, fruits, milk products and grains. These are further classified as simple natural, simple refined, complex natural and complex refined.

Refined carbohydrates are found in processed foods such as white bread, pasta, cakes and cookies, aerated drinks and soda. Common sources of natural carbohydrates include –

• Grains

• Seeds and nuts

• Milk

• Fruits and vegetables

• Legumes – peas, beans, lentils

A diet low in carbohydrates can help you lose weight and improve your metabolism. You might want to switch to a low-carb diet if you are aiming for weight loss or are looking to change your eating habits.

Health Risks of a Low-carb Diet

On one hand, a low-carb diet has been shown to keep away metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. However, there are a few risks associated with this diet. Studies reveal that reducing the intake of carbohydrates drastically may have the following side effects –

• Headache

Bad breath

Muscle cramps

• Weakness

Fatigue

• Skin Rashes

Diarrhoea

Health Risks of a Low-carb Diet

Constipation

Certain types of diet limit the consumption of carbohydrates so much that it leads to gastrointestinal disorders – acid reflux, dyspepsia and others – as well as bone problems. Moreover, you miss out on the essential nutrients that your body requires to function. Not getting enough of these nutrients can result in vitamin or mineral deficiencies.

Restricting carbohydrate intake to 20gms a day may lead to ketosis. Ketosis refers to a condition where your body does not get adequate glucose (sugar) to transform into energy. So, your body breaks down the stored fats and causes ketones to build up, triggering symptoms like nausea, headache, and mental/physical weakness.

If you are looking to cut back on your daily carbs intake, you should get in touch with a nutritionist/dietician first. He can prepare a diet chart for you while keeping in mind your overall health requirements.

Joint Pain - Know Ayurveda Treatment For It!

Joint Pain - Know Ayurveda Treatment For It!

In Ayurveda, joint pain is known as 'Sandhigata Vata'. Arthritis and Joint pain are among the most prevalent problems faced by adults, mostly old people. As per ayurveda, 'vata Dosha' Is responsible for joint pains and other discomforts associated with it. Natural remedies and proper lifestyle techniques can be utilized to balance the 'vata' to lessen the occurrence and severity of joint pain. Factors including, old age, obesity, injury and strenuous physical activities (that require a lot of joint movements) are responsible for disturbing the balance of your 'vata'.

The following are some ayurvedic home remedies that can be utilized to treat joint pain:

1. Massage therapy - Warm coconut, castor, mustard, olive or garlic oil can be utilized to massage the affected areas to lessen the intensity of pain. If you massage the affected joints with natural oils, it improves blood circulation and relaxes the swelling and stiffness in the region.

2. Hot & Cold Compress - Cold and hot compresses can be utilized to ease your joint pain effectively. Heat compression decreases the pain, increases the blood circulation and relaxes the swollen joints and muscles. On the other hand, cold therapy lessens the inflammation of the affected joint. Place hot and cold towel alternatively on the affected area to achieve immediate relief from persistent pain.

3. Fenugreek - Ingest a teaspoon of ground fenugreek seeds and drink a glass of lukewarm water. Fenugreek has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that make it effective for joint pains. Follow this remedy every morning on a regular basis to achieve optimal results.

4. Turmeric - Add a pinch of turmeric and a teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink this solution on a regular basis for a week. Turmeric contains anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which makes it an excellent remedy for treating joint pains.
5. Apple cider vinegar - Add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and a little honey to a cup of lukewarm water. Drink this solution twice daily, before your meals. Apple cider vinegar has an alkalizing effect, which makes it an effective remedy to remove the toxins that are responsible for causing joint pain.

6. Healthy diet - A balanced diet that comprises a lot of green leafy vegetables and fresh seasonal fruits is good for your joints. The uncontrolled intake of fatty food, dairy products, and high sodium diet must be avoided in order to avoid arthritis and joint pain.

Fungal infection or ring worm. When occurs in groin, called as jock itch. Usually fungal infection is common in moist areas of body like skin folds. It's mostly circular or round in appearance. May be red or black in colour. Treatment depending on the type and severity. Avoid sharing clothes, towels and soap; sweating also increases it. Facelift - Look Years Younger With It!

Facelift - Look Years Younger With It!

Age is really nothing but a number. The best thing about age is to embrace it. However, not everybody can jovially accept the bodily changes that come with age, especially the wrinkles, the sagging skin and the not-so-wanted curves of the face. So are you tired of using a hundred different age-renewal creams?

Tired of the false promises from brands claiming their products would turn back time? Tired of putting heavy makeup to hide those wrinkles? Guess what? There is a long-term solution to these problems. Consult an awesome cosmetic surgeon and get a facelift. Since this is a life-changing decision, you must know about the different types of facelifts to give you a proper idea about the whole thing before you contact a surgeon.

A surgical procedure that involves minimizing the various signs of ageing around the face and neck area is called a facelift, also known as rhytidectomy. There are numerous types of facelift surgeries, a few common ones are discussed below-

  1. The deep plane procedure: There is a layer beneath our skin known as the superficial musculoapnoneurotic system (SMAS). The muscles of facial expression are surrounded by this layer. The deep plane lift is the most commonly used face-lift technique and in this technique, the SMAS is lifted, released and repositioned. After the repositioning of this layer, the loose, extra skin is removed and the edges of the layer are structured and stapled in place. This is by far the best-voted technique and is known to give long-lasting results with a lesser number of revisions.
  2. The short scar lifts: This includes various types of facelift techniques, which involve minimal scar formation. The short scar lift techniques, unlike the others, do not extend beyond the ears. The surgeon can re-suspend all those tissues that support the smile-line and jowls, thereby, tightening a moderate amount of loose skin wherever required.
  3. FAT auto transfer?: In this technique, fat from the buttock/stomach/thigh area is collected by the process of liposuction and is then injected into the face to fill in the required areas.

However, the most important part is to contact a certified cosmetic surgeon because as already discussed, this is a life-changing decision, and one wrong move can cost you a lot.

Glad to hear out your problem on this forum. It seems like your psychiatrist or specialist doctor gave you a medication prochlorperazine for bppv or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and you took them faithfully. It also seems like you developed acute dystonia and akathesia. If you stopped the medications immediately after having been told to by the doctor you will start to feel better. Different people react differently to these medications although these medications are extremely beneficial to those who do not experience side effects. Unfortunately if you have had side effects you may need to wait for a few weeks for these symptoms to go away. I hope you continue to consult your doctor. If you need second opinion, you are certainly welcome to do so privately. Look forward to hearing from you. Hair Loss - How Ayurveda Can Reduce It?

Hair Loss - How Ayurveda Can Reduce It?

With changing lifestyles and environmental pollution, hair fall is becoming a bigger issue than it was a few decades ago. People in their 20s and 30s are losing hair, necessitating hair transplant.

Hair fall definitely affects a person’s esthetics, but it is a bigger issue than what just meets the eye. Hair fall, especially in men, can lead to baldness and when it occurs in the younger years, it affects their overall personality and self-esteem. Hair loss is usually associated with old age and this gives them an appearance much older than they actually are. This can even lead to depression and personality changes.

Ayurveda believes that hair loss has a deep-rooted problem. It believes that a combination of hair products, massage, meditation, and yoga can help in curing hair fall.

There are various products which are believed to have a dramatic effect on hair fall.

  1. Bhringaraj: This literally translates to the “king of hair.” Available for use in various forms like oil, powder or paste, this helps hair health in multiple ways reversing hair loss, promotes growth, and controls premature greying.
  2. Ritha: Ritha and shikakai are used as natural hair wash products for centuries. Minus the chemicals, they are excellent for preventing hair fall and also add to hair shine and strength.
  3. Shikakai: Another natural cleanser for the hair, it is loaded with vitamins antioxidants. It also helps retain the natural oils in the scalp. It can be mixed with water or with tea residue and applied as a paste on the hair.
  4. Brahmi: Another wonderful product for the hair, it promotes hair follicles, nourishes the roots, removes dead skin from the scalp, and reduces hair fall. This can be used in combination with amla, tulsi, and curd for combined benefits.
  5. Neem: This again can be used as an oil or as a paste. Neem helps hair fall by improving blood circulation, reducing dandruff and reduces itchiness. It has a cooling effect on the scalp.

In addition to these products, Ayurveda has other ways to control hair fall.

  1. Specific yoga asanas are believed to improve hair fall. These asanas which mostly require the person to stand on their head increase blood flow to the scalp and promote hair growth.
  2. A major reason for hair loss is stress and anxiety, and so meditation which helps in stress management can help in controlling hair fall and hair loss.
  3. Various oils like castor oil, coconut oil, neem oil, olive oil, almond oil, etc., can be used at slightly warmer temperatures to massage the scalp. This promotes the hair follicles and promotes hair growth.

The next time you are worried about hair fall, try these options and see the difference.
