Swelling of vocal cords causes voice change and even difficulty in breathing some times.So probably your mother have tonsillar swelling instead of vocal cord.

thanks for your query on Lybrate
"as" per your clinical history is concerned do record your body temperature every 6 hours upto 48 hours. Take oral antibiotics (ab-fax-az tab) twice a day for 7 days, add (crocin -650 mg) every 8 hours hours for fever.
Do these investigations and follow me with reports-
a) cbc with differential b) rapid antigen test for malaria c) urine test (re/me/culture)
d) esr hope that helps.

Check his breathing and activity. If he's not breathing fast and not distressed, playful, then no medicines are required. If he looks sick to you, then consider a course of basic antibiotic like amoxicillin orally and look for improvement.
