Dear Raj,
Please motivate your brother to stop alcohol. Explain to him about the benefits he will have without alcohol. Please give him the medical treatments available for him to quit alcohol.
Since alcohol is a sedative, when he stops drinking there is difficulty in sleeping. The brain gets used to the drinks. It will ask him to give drinks by disturbing his sleep.
So, doctors' first medicine when he stops alcohol is a Calmpose kind of drug. There are many types of such drugs - bo...more

Dear Anil,
Alcohol addiction and depression go hand in hand. Becoming irritable and hyper is possible in both intoxication and withdrawal. Get treated for both.

Not at all possible. Ideally, the person who is an addicted must want to quit himself. If he is not willing he has not reached'Rock Bottom' in his habit, which is the worst condition before one is willing to give up. Ideally, your father should want to give up alcohol himself to begin with. If not, it is going to be an uphill task and to the most part impossible. However, you should not be in want of trying. If he is unwilling to seek help, he needs to be admitted to a rehabilitation center for ...more

If he is unwilling to seek help, he needs to be admitted to a rehabilitation center for at least 6 months. If not, there are centers who will come and pick him up when he is drunk, when his resistance will be ineffective. This will require mom's permission and written consent. After your dad returns from...more

You have all my sympathies and I am very concerned that your husband has not reached what we call, ‘Hitting Rock Bottom’ as yet. To me his Rock Bottom seems to be death i.e. only death can stop his addiction! Anyway do not despair as yet and you may attempt the following and see how it works: I know you have tried a de-addiction center but he should not have been released if he was not ready. So in this attempt, he may be taken to another de-addiction center that are stricter and will also have ...more

you may attempt the following and see how it works: I know you have probably tried a de-addiction center but he should not have been released if he was not ready. So in this attempt, he may be taken to another de-addiction center that is stricter and will also have a follow-up treatment and AA meetings for him to compulsorily attend. Whatever I suggest, kindly involve or share it with mom or elder family members to make it effective and suffer the least backlashes, if any. Ideally, your brother ...more

Dear lybrate-user,
You can get into a deaddiction centre for 3-4 months to quit both. If it is not possible, if you are motivated, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) can be done in 12 weekly sessions. Along with that you may use nicotine replacement, Bupropion or Varenicline for quitting cigarettes. For alcohol, you have treatment of withdrawal symptoms, anti craving drugs for 9-12 months or aversion tablet disulfiram. You need to discuss with your doctor and make a personalised plan of ...more

His condition is serious especially the blood int eh stool. Ideally, the decision to want to quit must come from the addict himself. In this case, there is a danger to his life if he continues, and therefore the decision must be made by responsible others. If this is difficult for you, do get the counsel and help of an elderly relative whom he respects and let him do the convincing. If he does not cooperate, then take the decision and call in the rehabilitation center to just take him away. He m...more
