Expectorants are of two types:
mucolytics: which thin out tenacious mucoid secretions in the airways
mucokinetics or “expectorants”: they help the clearance of mucus by making coughing easier
both should not be prescribed in dry cough as they are known to aggravate cough.
However, wet cough is due to the secretions in the airways and should never be suppressed. Mucokinetics are used in this case which makes coughing easier.
Mucokinetics are not combined with antitussives....more

Children often suffer form recurrent respiratory infections. Every time an antibiotic is prescribed. Ima warns not to give antibiotics so frequently. As a result, the infection keeps happening and then the child develops cough as the body tries to take out all the mucous of the precious recurrent infections. I strongly recommend not to give any couch syrup as it will just be a temporary suppression. The cough will return again after the suppressive action of the drug is exhausted.
