Diabetes is a disease which can be controlled with medication, diet and exercise and cannot be cured. Therefore, you cannot stop the medication when your blood sugar levels come back to normalcy. Raised Blood sugar level in the body is controlled by the medications. If you stop the medicines, again the blood sugar level rises. If only metformin is taken it should be after food. If sustained release tablet is there then od may ok. If not twice a day is better. Side effects are less if taken after food.
