Dear Lybrate User, Allopathic medicines shd be stopped not abruptly but the dosage has to be reduced gradually. For example, if patient is taking 1 tablet a day, reduce it to half tablet a day for a month. In next subsequent month, reduce it to 1/4th for a month. And then stop it. These are not medications under addiction category. These medications maintain your brain (mind) neurotransmitters in normal manner. Since you have disorder on stopping them, your neurotransmitters undergo dysregulation. So remove the notion that your addiction and take these medications attending regular psychiatrist review. need to consult to Dr. Before stopping any medicine or start any new medicine. The period of taking medicine is depending upon the severity of the illness. Regular intake of medicine and regular follow up with your psychiatrist always helps. Nice to know that you feel better with lithium and lamotrigine.
Lithium is time tested effective tablet for bipolar disorder, especially for hypomania.
Constipation is NOT a side effect of lithium. On the other hand, lithium being a salt causes loose motions in few persons. Find other causes for constipation and settle them continuing lithium.
