I am very concerned that your brother has not reached what we call, ‘Hitting Rock Bottom’ as yet. To me, his Rock Bottom seems to be death if he is a heavy drinker and is completely sloshed everyday i.e. Only death can stop his addiction! Anyway do not despair as yet and you may attempt the following and see how it works: you may have tried a de-addiction center but he should not have been released if he was not ready. So in this attempt, he may be taken to another de-addiction center that i...more

That is not true. If he wants to and is willing, he can get out of the addiction to alcohol with support. If he thinks he can do it from home, that I agree, may be very difficult. He has developed dependence and tolerance, two factors that work together, to increase our need for the substance and to need more of it for the same pleasure, over time. These effects condition us psychologically and physically, that giving up appears to be a very difficult task. That is why detoxification is recommen...more

Dear lybrate-user,
It is a crores of rupees question. Many researchers are still spending much time and energy to find such a medicine or counseling.
Right now, we have effective drugs to counteract withdrawal symptoms. We have 2-3 types of tablets to counteract craving for alcohol. Of course, we have disulfiram (antabuse) for developing aversion towards alcohol.
We also have motivational enhancement therapy, relapse prevention therapy, family therapy, individual therapy, etc.

You will need to meet with a doctor who will prescribe disulfiram, an antabuse, which when taken cannot be mixed with any alcohol. If you so much as consumed even small quantities found in medicines, you an have an adverse reaction and may involve hospitalization. If you think that you will find it very difficult, then admit yourself to a hospital and go for de-addiction: which normally lasts for about two weeks. Then follow that up with addiction counseling from a professional for at least thre...more

Dear Luise,
Since alcohol is a sedative, when you stop drinking there is difficulty in sleeping. The brain gets used to the drinks. It will ask you to give drinks by disturbing your sleep.
So, doctors' first medicine when you stop alcohol is a Calmpose kind of drug. There are many types of such drugs - both tablets and injections. Few act only for 2 hours, few acts longer than 24 hours. It will be given for 2-3 weeks initially, when you stop drinking, depending on your need. It is a dru...more

Dear Sir I can see you are quite concerned about your father. Please talk to him about how you feel and discuss with him about seeking professional help. Please encourage your father to see a psychiatrist. Treatment for addiction consists of a combination of medication and psychological therapy. He will anak need a physical examination and void test.

Not at all possible. Ideally, the person who is an addicted must want to quit himself. If he is not willing he has not reached'Rock Bottom' in his habit, which is the worst condition before one is willing to give up. Ideally, your father should want to give up alcohol himself to begin with. If not, it is going to be an uphill task and to the most part impossible. However, you should not be in want of trying. If he is unwilling to seek help, he needs to be admitted to a rehabilitation center for ...more

Ideally, your father should want to give up alcohol himself to begin with. If not, it is going to be an uphill task and to the most part impossible. However, you should not be in want of trying. If he is unwilling to seek help, he needs to be admitted to a rehabilitation center for at least 6 months. If not, there are centers who will come and pick him up when he is drunk, when his resistance will be ineffective. This will require mom's permission and written consent. After your dad returns from...more
