I'm 37 year old male on bp meds since the age of 29, i've been on atenolol 50, nifedipine 10, amlodipine 5, currently on metoprolol succinate xl 50 and cilnidipine 10. I learnt from my personal experiences and also from web literature that beta blockers/calcium channel blockers can cause slow heart rate or bradycardia unlike angiotensin receptor blockers (arb' s) like telmisartan or thiazide diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide or chlorthalidone. Can I switch from beta blockers to arb's with docs advice to negate the effects of beta blockers. What about celiprolol, carvedilol and pindolol? My last bp readings were, 130/90, 140/80 and 130/85 monitored every 7-10 days. I have undergone my lipid profile, kidney function, liver function and thyroid tests a month ago and everything seemed normal. I'm not diabetic and it doesn't run in the family as well. I do have allergic rhinitis from so many years for which I have tried levocetirizine, montelukast and fexofenadine meds as and when required. Also take placida plus for anxiety issues. I'm just asking this out of curiosity.

Hi curiosity is fine, but if you try googling each and every medication you will find something which your mind wants to find. What is best for you your doctors know better than you as the beta blockers which you have mentioned you have just googled them and have no idea regarding their efficacy potency or mortality benefit. You should know that not any beta blocker can be started as there is scientific evidence behind which one to start in a particular patient and this information sadly your go...more

My age is 52 yrs. In 2011, when I was 48 I underwent CABG wherein 6 graftings were done. Presently, I am taking Ecosprin 150mg. Atorvastatin 10mg. Telma 20 mg and Cardivas 3.125mg (twice daily). My concern is that I am losing muscle mass. My waist size has reduced from 34 inches to 32 inches I am losing flesh from legs, arms and hips. There has been no significant loss in weight which is more or less constant in all these four years. Every time I visit my cardiologist for follow up visit which is normally every six months, I raise this issue but he assures that there is no need of worry and this may be due to strict diet and morning walk. He assures that this loss of muscle mass will settle down on its own. I consulted other physicians also who also said that it is due to intake of statins. My LFT, Lipid Profile, BSF, BSPP, Thyroid Profile, Kidney profile reports are normal. I have seen so many people who underwent CABG but none of them have become so skinny. They look healthy as before. Please advise what could be reason for this. I would also like to mention here that this loss of muscle mass started much before I underwent CABG, may be from the age of 46 yrs.

Hi, Good to know that you are concern about your muscle mass. You are right that you are losing ur muscle mass. You require a good nutrition to gain ur muscle mass again simultaneously to keep ur body fat under controlled levels. For this you require a proper diet consultation. I am diabetic type-2 for last 6-7 years plus had cardiac arrest in Jan 2015. I take my cardiac related medication regularly and medication for diabetes; while my blood sugar level fluctuates rather wildly. I walk more than 8000 steps every morning for almost one hour get back home have coffee without sugar (for last 12-15 years) with two biscuits (Marie), followed by breakfast {Idly 3/4 or Dosa 2 or Upma 2 scoops or 2/3 slices of wheat bread with one egg} I have a small sized mug of porridge around 10/11am followed by lunch at 1pm {Rice (2/3 laddles) or chapati (2), subzi two scoops, liquid curry 2 scoops & yogurt 2 scoops}. Some days only there is evening coffee or tea w/o sugar and some biscuits 2nos or poha dry}. Dinner is almost same (if rice for lunch then wheat for dinner}. There is a lot of physical activity done around house plus climbing from GF to FF to roof top. Presently medication is; (a) PRAX A 75 (0-1-0), (b) Istavel 100mg (1-0-0) (c) Cardivas CR 10 (1-0-0),(d) A to Z (1-0-0) {Multi vitamin tablets} (e) Rozavel F (0-0-1), (f) Diamicron Mr. 30mg (0-0-1) Walking is no problem except need to do a slower start than what was done earlier feeling is pleasant pain & tiredness very brief which is naturally cooled off sitting shade on terrace reading morning newspapers. I can easily walk same distance in evening. Sugar level is fluctuating sometimes as low as 88/120 to as high as 150/210? How do I ensure it remains steady and thro what control? Diet? Please advice.

You are perfectly following a diabetic diet and the sugar levels you mentioned are minor fluctuations and need not require extra medication
