Excellent Sources Of Protein For Vegetarians!

Excellent Sources Of Protein For Vegetarians!

The most common dietary problem that every vegetarian comes across is protein deficiency. It was a widely acknowledged fact that animal products are the best protein sources. However, it is no longer so, and vegetarians everywhere can now rejoice!

Here are the 13 best sources of protein for vegetarians:

  • Tofu and tempeh - Tempeh and tofu are both soy products and they have the highest amount of vegetarian proteins, about 15-20 grams per serving.
  • Edamame - Edamame or soybean is excellent for snacking. They contain 8.4 grams of protein in just half a cup.
  • Leafy greens - Vegetables usually do not contain much protein, but eating green vegetables will significantly add to your protein consumption. For example, you can eat one cup of cooked broccoli as that contains 8.1 grams of protein.
  • Hemp - Blend hemp seeds in smoothies or baked goods to get your daily dose of protein. Hemp contains 10 grams of protein per tablespoon.
  • Chia seeds - Chia seeds contain 4.7 grams of protein per two tablespoons, making them excellent sources of protein.
  • Seitan - This is a meat substitute made from wheat gluten and it contains 36 grams of protein per serving (about half a cup).
  • Non-dairy milk - Milk made from soy (best non-dairy protein source), almond, rice and hemp are good dairy substitutes.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder - This will surprise you, but bitter cocoa contains nearly 1 gram of protein per serving (1 tablespoon).

Vegetarians now can also fulfil their protein requirements by adding the above-mentioned plant-based food items for a healthy and nutritious living.

Internet Addiction - How To Diagnose It?

Internet Addiction - How To Diagnose It?

Is there anybody you know who uses internet excessively in a day, like for playing video games, visiting porn sites, for online shopping, using Facebook or visiting different chatting sites again and again? Is his or her excessive internet usage interfering with daily life, interpersonal relationships, work, school, etc.? If the answer is yes, then maybe he or she is suffering from internet addiction.

Internet addiction is a growing social issue which is being debated worldwide. Internet has become an inseparable part of our daily living. Problematic use of internet can lead us to various mental and physical problems. Surveys in the United States and Europe have indicated alarming prevalence rates between 1.5 and 8.2 percentage respectively. There are some criteria to classify and diagnose internet addiction disorder.

The following 5 criteria are required to diagnose internet addiction:

  1. The individual remains preoccupied with the internet (thinks about the previous online activity or anticipate next online session)

  2. Needs to use internet with increased amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction.

  3. Has made unsuccessful efforts to control, cut back, or stop internet use.

  4. Is restless, moody, depressed, or irritable when attempting to cut down or stop internet use.

  5. Has stayed online longer than originally intended.

Additionally, at least one of the following must be present:

  1. Risked the loss of a significant relationship, job, educational or career opportunity because of the internet.

  2. Lying to conceal the extent of involvement with the internet.

  3. Use internet as a way of escaping from problems or of relieving a dysphoric mood (like; feelings of helplessness, guilt, anxiety, depression)

There are different models available to explain the causal factor of internet addiction disorder. A comprehensive model of the development and maintenance of internet addiction by Winkler & Dorsing which takes into account socio-cultural factors, biological vulnerabilities like genetic factors, abnormalities in neurochemical processes, psychological predispositions and specific attributes of the internet to explain excessive engagement in internet activities.

Apart from the above-discussed points, there are two significant psychological issues commonly seen in this group - a strong tendency to escape from the reality is there among internet addicts. These individuals find difficulty in facing the real world, maybe due to certain conflict issues which evoke stress and anxiety in them. Involvement with technology and internet becomes a way out to get rid of the discomfort. Another psychological issue is the tendency to control the environment. Humans have a tendency to get control over everything and it is a fact that we can't control other people and situations. Internet addicts are involved in this compulsive behaviour may be because it is easy to get control of technology and internet than the real world which is more threatening for them.

Impact of problematic usage of internet on social relationships has become alarming nowadays. The habit of surfing the internet continuously can be destructive indirectly. Even it has been seen that people drift away to the point that he/she cannot interact with people. Constant preoccupation with internet is damaging one’s social skills. People are losing touch with their life and their self-identity. Nowadays people don’t make efforts to establish face to face conversations, as many easy ways are available over internet, like chat messengers, email, etc. The constant effects of addiction to internet can lead an individual to such situations that involve various mental and behavioural problems like depression, anxiety, substance abuse, etc. The absence of social interaction also can lead to various physical effects on an individual’s brain chemistry and general physical health.

There have been a lot of debates on which treatment modality is effective for the treatment of Internet Addiction Disorder. In many cases, multimodal treatments have been employed. It has been seen that there are lots of underlying psychological problems found in internet addicts, like anxiety, depression, etc. In such cases medications are also considered to be effective.

Apart from pharmacological interventions, different psychotherapeutic models are found to be very helpful in treating internet addiction like cognitive therapy, behaviour therapy, art therapy, family therapy, skill-building training, etc. Studies have found cognitive behavioural therapy, in particular, is very effective and can bring better outcome among this group.

Insulin - Know More About It!

Insulin - Know More About It!

The first and the most important thing to be cleared is what exactly insulin is. Now we all are well accustomed with the fact that we get the energy to do what we do, by eating the food we eat. So, how exactly is all this energy generated? That is exactly what is going to be explained in the briefest way possible.

Most carbohydrates contain a type of sugar known as glucose. After we finish eating, the carbohydrates break down into smaller sugar molecules called glucose inside the digestive tract. Pancreas is a gland, which is located somewhere behind the stomach and is the source of all the endocrine functioning. This gland produces a hormone named Insulin. When the glucose molecules are released into our bloodstream, this insulin helps the cells throughout our body to soak up these simple sugar molecules and use them for providing the body with energy. Now that our base is clear, let’s move on to the importance of insulin in our body.

Why it is important?

Insulin helps our body to absorb glucose and provides the body with all the energy to do what it does. Another really important task that insulin does is balance the glucose levels in our blood. As soon as there is extra glucose in our blood-stream, insulin gives a signal in which the excess glucose is stored in the liver for future use, i.e, in situations when blood sugar drops and the body needs an extra energy boost.

Occurrence of diabetes

In a certain turn of events, when the body refuses to use the insulin properly or in worse cases, the body fails to produce enough insulin, diabetes mellitus occurs. Diabetes can be of two kinds:

  • Type 1 - In this case, the immune system destroys all the insulin-producing cells, thereby, ceasing the production of insulin. As such, insulin injections are mandatory to maintain blood sugar levels.

  • Type 2 - In this case, the body does not respond well to the instructions of insulin and the sugar level in the body is not regulated. The body, in turn, produces a lot of insulin in a desperate attempt to improve blood sugar levels. The patients can turn the situation over by changing their food habits and lifestyle and taking certain medications.

For people taking insulin treatment, it is good to note that insulin can be of rapid-acting type, short-acting type, long-acting type and intermediate-acting type.

Hello, thanks for the query. The test results do show you are in pre-diabyic state. Fortunately this is situation which one can reverse and prevent it from progressing to diabetes by adapting a modified lifestyle. That means regular exercise, diet control and maintaining normal body weight. Your present bmi is 26.70 kgs/sq meter (normal < 23 kgs/sq meter). That means you have an excess of of about 10 kgs. That needs to be reduced. Then your glucose level will also be coming down. Taking metformin is helpful. But lifestyle measures are much better option. Thanks.

At your age this claim is serious. If you have depression and anxiety then there are some major ramifications to take into account. I believe there may be some genetic predisposition or there has been some childhood issue, related to anger and fear, that needs urgent attention. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and the doctor too and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do yoga meditation exercises, spend time in nature or gardening, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on tv or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in god to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Skin & Hair Care During Monsoon!

Skin & Hair Care During Monsoon!

The onset of monsoon rains is a great relief from the scorching summer heat. But the season brings with it humidity, which may not be the best thing for your hair and skin. In order to maintain the originality of your hair and skin, you need to take extra care during the rainy season.

Here e a few tips that may come handy for skin and hair care when monsoon kicks in.

Hair Care Tips

The monsoons usher in hair problems, like greasiness, stickiness, and hair fall. The increased moisture content in the air makes hair look flat and dull, because of which they appear limp. Here is what you can do to retain moisture to the scalp, and increase hair volume –

• To avoid a damp, frizzy, flat look, use a herbal/mild shampoo and conditioner that will help nourish your hair. Avoid using lathering shampoo, as they tend to make your hair rough and dry in this season.
• Tying a neat ponytail is a favourable solution, as your hair tends to get tangled easily in monsoon
• A rejuvenating and therapeutic scalp massage can help revitalize damp hair from the roots
• Oil your hair once or twice a week, preferably with coconut or almond oil
• Thrice a week, wash your hair with lukewarm water
• Use a scarf to shield your hair against adverse weather conditions – sunrays, the rain and the wind – whenever you step outdoor
• Use a thin towel to pat your hair dry after a shower
• If you get drenched in the rain, make sure you wash your hair with a mild shampoo once you get back home. This will help keep your scalp free of germs.
• If you have severe dandruff problems, use an anti-dandruff shampoo to cleanse your scalp thoroughly.
• Always use a wide-toothed comb to brush your hair. This reduces the chances of hair fall.

Skin Care Tips

Due to prolonged exposure to rainwater, your skin tends to shrink and appear gloomy, wrinkled. Another major skin problem that is widely observed during monsoon is the breakout of acne. Besides, the chances of developing fungal infections on the skin also cannot be ruled out during this time of the year. Nevertheless, a simple skincare routine can help you deal with all or at least most of these problems –

• Follow the most trusted skincare regime – cleansing, toning, and moisturizing to get rid of clogged pores, and avoid allergies and fungal infections
• Fungal infections of the toes and nails are also very common during the rainy season – maintain good hygiene and keep them clean to avoid skin problems
• Use a water-based sunscreen lotion that has SPF ranging between 15 and 30, and apply every 3 to 4 hours
• It is best to avoid cosmetic products/make-ups during monsoon, as it may cling to your skin after a downpour, clogging the pores. If you must use cosmetics, go for the ones that are water-resistant.

Although skin and hair problems may seem mild and harmless, but can potentially cause a lot of trouble if not taken care of. Besides, they may give way to embarrassment and emotional trauma, eventually affecting your personality. Following these simple measures can help you get rid of hair and skin problems during monsoon.
