Fever - Know When To Be Alert!

Fever - Know When To Be Alert!

Fever is not a disease! It's a known fact that the normal human body temperature is 98.6 F (37 C). If the temperature goes beyond that, then it's called fever. But one must not worry every time if there is a rise in the temperature.

Why?
The reason is that the immune system is designed to raise temperature as a defence mechanism if there is an attack by a foreign body (such as bacteria). So body temperature may fluctuate between 97 and 100.4. But there is no need to worry.

When to Consider Checking?
A routine checkup is unnecessary. You may consider checking when:

  • You feel the warmth while you touch
  • You feel very tired, dizzy and lose appetite
  • You feel nauseated, see rashes on the body, experience loose motion, sore throat, muscle pain, headache, etc.

Is it Time to Worry?
Normally, fever is not dangerous. However, if you see the following conditions, then it's time to worry and call a doctor.

  • If the body temperature is more than 103 F
  • If fever lasts for more than five days
  • If you feel difficulty in breathing
  • If there is severe vomiting or diarrhea
  • If you feel stiffness in the neck and have headache
  • If you feel excessively sleepy and lethargic
  • If you see redness in skin, rashes or blood in the stool.

If the condition worsens, it is time to rush to a hospital. There could be following:

  • Meningitis: it's life-threatening and highly transmissible in case of bacterial infection. A combination of a fever, extreme headache and stiffness in the neck is an indication that you must rush to the emergency department of a hospital near you.
  • Difficulty in breathing or chest pain along with fever should prompt you to call for emergency medical assistance.
  • If someone has fever along with blood in stool, urine or mucus, it's one of the reasons to seek for emergency medical help.
  • If one has fever and is quite disturbed or puzzled unnecessarily, then the person should be taken to the emergency department.
  • A person with low immune responses (such as one who is suffering from cancer or AIDS) needs doctor's help in case of fever development.
  • Hyperthermia: it's a condition of very high fever, i.e., more than 104 F. The person seems to be confused and may not respond to verbal stimuli or commands. It's time for a medical emergency.

What Should You Do?
For mild fever, even home remedy can help. Aspirin shouldn't be the first choice and an absolute no for individuals less than 18 years. Other drugs that people usually tend to consume are ibuprofen or acetaminophen. One should also drink plenty of water. In case of a heat stroke, body needs to be cooled.
Other severe causes such as viral infection should lead you to a doctor.

Rhinorrhoea is normally due to some respiratory allergy. There will be some trigger factor and particular timing or surrounding pollution. Identify and avoid. There could be structural nasal defect like deviated nasal septum for which you should consult ent specialist. Yoga, breating exercises and saline water instillation in nose daily may also help.

One can prevent diabetes if a strict life style modification is followed. Namely maintain your weight near normal, (which is fine with you as the weight is much less, exercise for more than 1 h every day, avoid deep fried foods, less of sweets and direct sugar. Also avoid alcohol and smoking. With these changes you should be able to keep free from diabetes.

How can I be alert from being any kind of flu or any other disease in rainy season?
Hi. A good and strong immune system acts as a soldier and protects us from any attack whether it's cold and cough or major diseases!! So, building up a strong immunity as well as precautions will help you to stay away from most of the diseases. We all get exposed to the same environment, but all of us doesn't get affected by it! Why - because of different immune system. So, if a person has a strong immune system, we are protected from the attack of any virus or bacteria! A healthy, nutritious and balanced diet along with exercise will give you that. A healthy and strong immune system prevents us getting any diseases even a simple cough and cold. So, to build up a strong immunity, you need to alter few changes in your daily routine. If you don't have any underlying medical condition, you can follow the below points for healthy living. The diet plays an important role in making our immune system stronger: 1.Get enough protein. You can get protein from meat, dairy, eggs and vegetables. 2.Avoid saturated fats, but eat plenty of unsaturated fats. These "good fats" are found in corn, sesame, safflower, soybean, and cottonseed oils. 3.Eat limited amounts of carbohydrates. Consuming appropriate amounts of wheat, corn, and cereals helps to create the energy required for the body to produce white blood cells. 4.There are a number of particular foods that can help to boost-up your immunity. These include: Garlic, Almonds, Kale, Navy beans, Reishi mushrooms, Blueberries and raspberries, Yogurt, Green, Matcha, and Tulsi teas. 4.Eat antioxidants. Antioxidants are vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that help repair damaged cells in the body. Examples of antioxidants are Beta Carotene (apricots, broccoli, beets, spinach, green peppers, tomatoes, corn, and carrots), Vitamins C ( berries, broccoli, nectarines, oranges, strawberries, bell peppers, tomatoes, and cauliflower) and E (broccoli, carrots, nuts, papaya, spinach, and sunflower seeds), Zinc (oysters, red meat, beans, nuts, and seafood), and Selenium. 5.Vitamin A is also an antioxidant, and helps your immune system to function more efficiently. In addition to supplements, you can get vitamin A from carrots, tomatoes, chilis, and squash. 6.Echinacea, ginseng, aloe vera, and green tea are all said to boost your white blood cell count. 7.Exercise regularly. Getting enough exercise improves your cardiovascular health, and greatly reduces the likelihood of certain chronic diseases.. Exercise increases the flow of blood through different parts of the body, and it increases the body's excretion of harmful metabolites, helping your immune system function properly. So run, bike, swim, walk -- whatever gets you moving! 8.Stop smoking and Limit alcohol consumption. 9.You should drink 8 glasses of water every day. 10.Sufficient deep sleep also helps the cells replenish and regenerate and is therefore necessary if you want to maintain a healthy immune system. Medication: Take Schwabe’s Alpha-WD/ twice daily for 1month.
