Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) is episodes of rapid heart rate that start in a part of the heart above the ventricles. "Paroxysmal" means from time to time. In PSVT, an abnormal electrical pathway causes the heart to beat faster than normal. Episodes of rapid heart rate can last from a few minutes to several hours. A person with PSVT can have a heart rate as high as 250 beats per minute (bpm). ... PSVT can cause uncomfortable symptoms, but it's not usually life-threatening.

Dear Lybrateuser,
-In PSVT there is increase in heart rate due to the various defects in the electrical conduction mechanism of the heart
-many patients do not require any active treatment, person with frequent attacks should consult a cardiologist, medication may be prescribed & if medication fails then a procedure called radiofrequency catheter ablation can be done to restore the normal heart rhythm.
