Usher Syndrome - Things You Must Know!

Usher syndrome is a genetic disorder that is characterized by complications in vision and hearing; the most common of them being partial/complete loss of hearing and retinitis pigmentosa. Retinitis pigmentosa is characterized by progressive deterioration of the retina, resulting in deprivation of peripheral vision and subsequent night blindness.

The symptoms and its rate of progression usually vary among people. Usher syndrome is classified into three types:

  • Type 1: In this type, children are born with balance issues and hearing loss problems. The symptoms of night blindness and loss of peripheral vision associated with ‘Retinitis Pigmentosa’ only appear in the early stages of adolescence.
  • Type 2: In type 2, children are born with moderate to mild hearing loss problems. Retinitis Pigmentosa develops soon after the child reaches adolescence.
  • Type 3: In type 3 Usher Syndrome, children are usually born with normal hearing skills, however, loss of hearing and Retinitis pigmentosa occur soon after puberty.

Causes
Hearing loss in Usher syndrome occurs when the nerve cells that are present in the cochlear (inner ear’s spiral cavity) are affected by genetic mutation. A similar problem occurs in the cells of the retina leading to loss of vision. These cells allow conversion of light into electrical signals for the brain to interpret them. Both the parents need to pass the mutated gene to the child for it to be affected. If the child has only one gene, then he/she rarely develops the symptoms.

Treatment
This disorder does not have any prescribed course of treatments. The vision loss that occurs in this disorder can be slowed down by nutritional therapy. This therapy involves providing the body with essential amounts of vitamin A which can help in reducing vision loss. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ent Specialist.

Iam 24 hears old. Iam getting back bone pain at the hip position. I have acidity problem. Can you suggest how to get ...
Acidity can be controlled by capsules like omeprazole 20 mg daily for 10 - 15 days. No spicy or fried foods. Avoid taking frequent pain killers. For hip pain avoid self medication like strong pain killers which will make acidity worse. Better see orthopedic specialist for proper examination. Investigations, treatment and physiotherapy. See tat your body weight is maintained steady.

Hello Mr. Lybrate-user, as per your queries, it seems you should get a hearing check up done. As per your childeren, they are quiet right on their point as, it seems you hv got a high frequencies hearing loss, where you can miss sounds like bell, door bell, telephone ring etc. It is purely due to ageing or could be due to some associate problem like high b. P, increased blood sugar or could be due to thyroid also. It is necessary to done a hearing test very soon. After that further step can be taken.

Sir, I am hearing Impaired using a hearing aid. I have an interview in the coming few days. I feel my hearing ability...
Hi lybrate-user. I don't think the issue with you has anything to do with the aid. U r conscious of the fact that you have an impairment .though adequately controlled for. Relax.Chill. The issue with you is anticipatory anxiety. Yes anxiety is just a normal response to a real or perceived threat.in your case the interview n the interviewer. Pls Google rcpsych anxiety panic n phobias key facts to knw more. When anxious .our ability to focus. Pay attention n concentrate goes down. To listen properly one needs to be attentive. This isn't the first time you r facing anxiety am pretty much sure. Remember all the exams .vivas. Social situations you have faced so far. They also brought in a bit of fear .didn't they. Am pretty much sure you succeeded then n will now. Remember. Work is thy duty (preparing adequately n performing at the interview to the best of your abilities. Reward is not thy concern (whether you clear or not). I hope this helps. Best of luck. Regards.

Some people are born with a hearing loss, is there any treatment for them? Does hearing aids are available for them?

master in audiology &speech language pathology
Audiologist, Mumbai
Hello ma'am, as you mentioned in this it called as a congenital hearing loss. Mostly this caused of any pre or perinatal complication, due to any syndrome or related to diff cause. Hearing loss in such cases are mostly very severe category where sometimes only residual hearing is remaining. As a rehabilitation point of view we as a audiologist mostly focus on early intervention, so if child is less than 3 years then it required to go for cochlear implant or hearing aid fitting. In congenital case age will be play a most imp role bcoz under 5years only child will be able to understand language & their complication. After 5years it difficult to make there language age appropriate bcoz it obvious when child heard something then only they will learn language & communicate with others. For older child with congenital hearing loss then acco to the degree of loss treatment is vary but as I mentioned earlier they've severe category of loss so as a rehabilitation point of view sign lang or other manual communication help them. To detect such child as early as possible try to arrange oae& abr screening at nicu by audiologist. Thanks.

Cochlear Implants - 6 Benefits You Must Know!

MS-ENT, MBBS

Cochlear Implants - 6 Benefits You Must Know!

You should consider undertaking a cochlear implant in case you are experiencing hearing loss or are turning deaf. This is a small device that gets planted in your ear through a surgical procedure. It sends impulses to your auditory nerves directly, as a result of which sound signals get carried to your brain. Cochlear implants may not make you hear normally again, but help you with different sounds, and in the recognition of the different sounds around you like alarms, telephones, and door bells.

How it works?

  1. A cochlear implant is fit for children and adults who suffer from the sensorineural hearing loss. This condition damages the tiny hair cells in your inner ear, which is called the cochlea. Hearing becomes impaired when these get damaged.
  2. The device consists of two specific parts. The first part or the receiver-stimulator is placed under your skin via a surgical procedure. The other part of the device is the speech processor. It has to be worn around your neck in the form of a hearing aid.
  3. The external device is, however, larger in size than a usual hearing aid. The receiver gets placed under your skin, behind the ear via a small incision. It is connected to electrodes.
  4. This is inserted into the cochlea of your inner ear. The surgery requires a few hours to be undertaken successfully.
  5. The speech processor has to be placed two weeks after the surgery is undertaken. The processor can be connected to the microphone, and this can be worn around the ear.
  6. You can wear it on any other part of your body, based on your lifestyle and age.

Benefits of cochlear implant
The major benefits of a cochlear implant are as follows:

  1. You might be able to hear speech almost normally.
  2. You will be able to understand speech better, and will not have to depend on lip reading.
  3. It will be much easier and simpler for you to listen to the television and talk over the phone.
  4. You will be able to listen to music better.
  5. You may also be able to pick up various sounds around you that include soft, medium, and loud sounds.
  6. You will be able to control your own voice better. This makes other people understand you better.

If you are suffering from severe hearing loss, a cochlear implant may be able to change your life for the better. However, the results are not the same for all, and vary among people. It is possible for some people to benefit more from such an implant than others.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
