Want Healthy Pregnancy - 7 Habits You Must Follow

Pregnancy is one of the most wonderful journeys in a woman’s life. However, one must remember that there are several dos and don’ts linked to it. You can’t lead an undisciplined life and expect a healthy outcome. Your pregnancy has to be systematically dealt with. You have to give up on a lot of habits that could pose a risk to the health of your growing foetus. Here are some tips to have a healthy pregnancy:

  1. Quit smoking: If you are a regular smoker, it’s time to quit smoking. You must remember that babies born to mothers who smoke have a higher chance of being born as stillborn or prematurely. Babies have also been found to have low birth weight. This is really bad. Your baby will have to fight a lot to survive. You might be asked to undergo an emergency and untimely delivery. On the other hands, if you quit smoking, you will have lesser or no complications at all. Your foetus will be healthy and grow into a lovely and healthy infant.
  2. Eat well, eat right, and eat on time: Your diet plays an essential role in your entire pregnancy. You must include all essential nutrients in your diet. Don’t skip your meals and try to have a balanced diet. Avoid spicy and oily food as you experience indigestion issues due to pregnancy hormones. You will need to take some 300 calories extra per day for your foetus. Add vegetables and fruits to your diet.
  3. Take multivitamins: Pregnancy leads to a deficiency of nutrients in your body. You must take a lot of multi vitamins to avoid the deficiency. Ideally, one must start taking the additional vitamin supplements before the pregnancy starts. Thereafter, she must continue with the recommended doses. For example, Omega 3 reduces the chances of giving birth to premature babies.
  4. Take sufficient rest: You must take rest in adequate amounts and take up moderate exercises in a day for not more than 30 minutes.
  5. Don’t be exposed to toxics: You should try and minimise the chances of getting exposed to toxic substances.
  6. Destress yourself: Try and destress yourself by listening to good music, reading a book or taking a careful massage. But you must avoid moving outdoors.
  7. Drink water: You must drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated all the time. Your fluid balance must be maintained throughout the pregnancy. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist and ask a free question.

U seem to be suffering from urinary infection as well as vaginal and vulval infection. Pimples like cysts can be due to sexually transmitted infection too. U need to be examined by a gynaecologist and started on antibiotics and other medications. Get a urine culture test done. For constipation increase your fibre and fluid intake. For details for medications you can contact me if you like.

My 2 and 1/2 year daughter has mild yellowish vaginal discharge (on off) from the last 3 months and her labia is sticky. One doctor prescribed taxim-o-forte and another doctor prescribed cefolac 100. Are they both same?

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology), DMAS, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Lucknow
Both r antibiotics. Mild discharge may b present for sometime after birth and if it is persistent by 2 n 1/2 years also there s no harm taking a course of antibiotics.

One of my relatives 24 years old female person married just one year back. From the starting itself she is getting pain in her vagina at the time of sex. She is getting feared to meet with a sexual relation with her husband for that pain. She thought in the starting it might be painful later on it would be normal but after one year also the same pain is happening. Please can you suggest me any medicines or any way so that she can get relief from that pain. Thanking You.

pain during intercourse can be due to faulty or forceful technique or a tight vaginal cavity . foreplay helps in lubrication which will ease the process. Also she can use lignocaine gel available in market before the act to relieve pain.

On 15th day after. Urine test shows weekly positive. What are the scops of pregnancy and what are the other elements I need to check. What must be the minimum result of hcg test that I have always given in the lab and waiting for report.

On 15th day after. Urine test shows weekly positive. What are the scops of pregnancy and what are the other elements ...
Weekly positive is positive but sometimes it may suggest a failing pregnancy or an ectopic pregnancy. Get a serum b hcg, at this stage the value should be in 5 digits. Repeat it after 48 hours of first test .if the value doubles, it confirms the normal pregnancy.

Yes there r very chances that you will become pregnant. But make sure your thyroid levels r well controlled with medications before you conceive. your periods will also become regular once you control the thyroid levels. And if your levels r under control already, then there cud b many other reasons for irregular cycles. Consult a gynaec personally.

I have severe pain in my right pelvic pain. Extreme pain inside the vagina and lower back pains Doctor told me its early endometriosis. But the pain is not subsiding. I am married for 5 years and waiting to conceive soon. Could you help me.

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology), DMAS, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Lucknow
Hi Lybrate user. There can be many reasons for pelvic pain like ruptured, hemorrhagic or twisted ovarian cyst, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease to name a few. Endometriosis usually presents with progressive or increasing pain during menses and can lead to difficulty in conception in moderate to severe stages. I would advice you to get a pelvic and abdominal ultrasound first which will mostly diagnose the pathology. Get urself examined by a gynaecologist. U can discuss with me further if you like.

Yes preterm labour and high BP can recur in this pregnancy. If your thyroid was abnormal, get it checked as soon as possible and start medication as required. Keep vigilant about your BP by getting it checked atleast every 2 wks at this stage. Consult your gynaecologist n discuss about starting tab aspirin.
