Hye. Thankyou for the query. Plastics are everywhere – in food containers and toys, in cosmetics packaging and household utensils. While some plastics are eco-friendly and may be safe while some contain harmful chemicals or cause dangerous pollution during manufacturing. It’s just about impossible to avoid plastics altogether, but you can look for plastics that are safer for you and the environment. So get to know the recycling codes imprinted on the underside of plastic products. Look for these numbers on the plastic container. Safer choices are coded 1, 2, 4 and 5. Avoid 3, 6 and most plastics labeled 7. You can speak to the service provider or alternatively give them a tiffin from your end rather than them sending food in the plastic container.

Hi , while we do empathize with you, know that adding muscle is beneficial for your long-term good health as opposed to adding fat. To be able to do this, you would need to incorporate foods that are dense in both nutrients and calories along with a good exercise plan. We would be happy to carve out a personalized meal and exercise plan for you along with strategies and guidelines.

Hye. Thank you for your query. It is always better to have a multivitamin or mineral complex after possibly your breakfast or if not convenient then after lunch, to help better assimilation. Avoid taking empty stomach or with tea, coffee or aerated drinks.

Underweight is a term describing a person whose body weight is considered too low to be healthy. The definition usually refers to people with a body mass index (bmi) of under 18.5 a weight 15% to 20% below that normal for their age and height group. Low weight may be due to improper diet, reduced assimilation from intestine, illness, metabolism, genetics etc. Thus first we have to rule out any such condition, with this have a healthy diet with more proteins (legumes, eggs, fish, lean meat, vegetables and fruits, drink plenty of water and go for regular exercise. A homoeopathic constitutional treatment will definitely help you a lot.

I want to know abt creatine monohydrate supplement should I use it. Is it harmful or has side effects.

I want to know abt creatine monohydrate supplement should I use it. Is it harmful or has side effects.
Dear many people take body building or muscle mass building supplements these days to have an attractive physique in a short span of time. Testosterone, creatine, andro hormone supplements, glutamine supplements, fat burners are some of the popular bodybuilding supplements. Boosting the testosterone levels causes serious side effects like hair loss, breast enlargement in males (gynecomastia), prostate enlargement, acne, testicular atrophy and increased estrogen levels. Creatine is already present in our body therefore a healthy person does not require its additional dose. The excess of creatine in our body can cause many side effects. One major side effect is that creatine absorbs water from the other body organs and deposits into muscle cells. As a result, there is lack of water supply in the other parts of the body and suffers dehydration. Excess creatine also causes muscle cramps, kidney stones, ulcer, diarrhea, anxiety, stomach upset, headache etc. Excess intake of glutamine supplement may result in manic depression, stomach upset, nausea, lack of concentration, body ache and it often affects the brain as well. Higher dose of thermogenic supplements leads to heart palpitation, nervousness and behavioral changes. Whey protein side effects include allergic reactions, liver damage and kidney stones and excess dose of multivitamins cause headaches, muscle ache and dehydration remember that natural way is the best way to improve the muscle mass and strength. There is no need to take any supplements to gain muscle mass if you follow proper diet and weight training.

Lohri Special - Let's Celebrate it the Healthy Way!

M.sc- DFSM, B.Sc. - Dietitics / Nutrition

Lohri Special - Let's Celebrate it the Healthy Way!

In India, we move from one festival to the next. Lohri is the first major festival of the year and is celebrated in most parts of North India to mark the waning of winter and the harvest of Rabi crop. Lohri celebrations are characterised by blazing bonfires, folk dance and songs and trays filled with rewri, peanuts, popcorn, gajjak, sarson ka saag and makki ki roti. Unlike traditional mithais that go along with all other festivals, these foods are in fact healthy. Here are a few of their health benefits.

  1. Rewri and Gajjak: Rewri is a hardened toffee like sweet made from jaggery and sesame seeds. Jaggery helps regulate digestion and internal temperature, cleanses the blood and helps prevent problems like acne, joint pains and menstrual problems. It is also a rich source of iron and has anti-allergenic properties.
  2. Sesame seeds: Sesame seeds are rich in copper, zinc, iron, calcium, phosphorus and manganese. These nutrients help promote healthy bones, boost immunity, reduce stress and fight free radicals. This can help reduce chances of osteoporosis and slow down the ageing process. Sesame seeds are also said to have the ability to reduce the risk of many types of cancer.
  3. Peanuts: Peanuts are a rich source of folate, manganese and essential amino acids like tryptophan. This helps regulate blood sugar, metabolise fats and carbohydrates and helps the body to absorb calcium and promote healthy joints. Pregnant women can benefit from peanuts as the folic acid in them can help reduce the risk of giving birth to a baby with congenital defects. Peanuts can also help prevent gallstones and help regulate mood swings. Peanuts are also great for the brain as the vitamin B3 and niacin in them helps boost memory. These nutrients also help reduce bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol levels. Hence, peanuts reduce the risk of heart disease.
  4. Popcorn: Unlike the popcorn you enjoy at a movie hall, popcorn that is eaten at Lohri celebrations is free from butter and added flavouring. On its own popcorn is a rich source of fibre and has a very low calorific value. This makes popcorn a good snack to eat between meals. Popcorn is a whole grain snack and is rich in anti-oxidants called polyphenols. This can help protect the body against cancer, heart disease and other diseases caused by free radicals.

To make your Lohri even healthier, don’t just sit around the bonfire and warm your hands, Get up and dance to the beat of the dhol and burn all the calories you’ve been eating.
