How To Handle Acute Menstrual Cramps

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
How To Handle Acute Menstrual Cramps

Experiencing menstrual cramps for a few days every month is quite common for every woman. These cramps are commonly accompanied with pain. Menstrual cramps are referred to as dysmenorrhea. This is not a very serious health condition, but still the cramps can cause you pain and distress. You can manage the pain caused by menstrual cramps by making some simple changes and starting some practices. They are as follows:

  1. Dietary Changes: You have to make several dietary modifications to manage menstrual cramps. Reduce fat from your daily diet and consume more vegetables. A low-fat diet helps in reducing the levels of inflammation in your body. These changes will successfully help you to reduce the severity of menstrual cramps. You have to adopt a well-balanced diet.

  2. Medicines: Several painkillers which fall under the non-steroidal and anti-inflammatory groups are prescribed to relieve pain caused by the cramps. These medicines lower the production of prostaglandin that causes menstrual cramps. Inflammation and pain are relieved.

  3. Consume Green Tea: There are certain green teas, which relieve menstrual cramps. Herbal tea has been used since medieval ages for this purpose. Cramp bark is an effective tea used for this reason. Peppermint oil tea is also considered good.

  4. Fish Oil Supplements and Vitamin B1: Fish oil supplements and vitamin B1 help in naturally treating menstrual cramps. You will get quick and long-lasting relief by consuming these.

  5. Acupuncture: Acupuncture can be utilised to treat menstrual cramps. The nervous system gets relaxed, which increases the flow of blood to the internal body organs. Acupuncture assures effective pain relief.

  6. Massage Therapy: You can undergo massage therapy using certain essential oils. This provides great pain relief and is beneficial for menstrual cramps.

  7. Heating Pads: Heating pads provide efficient relief to menstrual cramps. Topically applied heat is also considered to be effective and pain relief is obtained in a short period of time.

  8. Boosting Endorphins: A boost in the endorphins improves your mood and gives relief from menstrual cramps. Endorphins are released when you work out or have an orgasm. Aerobic exercises and stretching techniques should be carried out regularly.

  9. Boosting Magnesium: Boosting the amount of magnesium in your diet helps in relieving pain from menstrual cramps. You can consume food items rich in magnesium or magnesium supplements.

Menstrual cramps usually do not require hospitalisation and you can self-treat it using simple remedies. However, if the pain experienced due to cramps is very severe and does not go away, you must consult a doctor.

Hello When was your last period. A very faint second line may mean a very early pregnancy or a non viable pregnancy. You can confirm with two b hcg blood test 48 hours apart. If you are having cramps with brownish bleeding then maybe its not a good pregnancy. Go to a doctor and get evaluated.

Hye, thanks for the query. Water intake depends on many factors like activity level, season, food intake, disease condition if any etc. Best way to ensure good intake of water is to sip on water through the day. You can be assured that you are taking enough water when the urine you pass is colourless (unless you are taking any medication or had fruits like beetroot). Also do not wait to be dehydrated and severely thirsty to have water. Ideally at least try to have at 2-3 liters of water per day (as long as you don't have any medical condition that needs restriction).

If it was protected sex then chances of you getting pregnant. The pill you took is hormonal and that can alter your periodic cycles. And do not worry. If you are worried then just do a urine pregnancy test. And be sure.

Pain, arthralgia of chikengunya lasts weeks to even 6 months at times. If there is no fever increase your fluid uptake. Get bp checked and urine routine microscopic tested to rule out high bp and kidney problem which may also cause body swelling. Restrict salt intake, take calcium supplements

Periodical testing of Blood Sugar Fasting , 2 hrs after principal meal and before dinner is necessary. HbA1c now will also help. Avoiding of free sugar, like sugar, jaggery, honey and sweet fruits for about a fortnight maintaining standard Body weight and then consulting a Diabetologist will establish possibility of Gestational Diabetes for which you need an expert advice. Hello I I have been trying to conceive since 4 months after which on Dec 15 2016 I had a faint positive line and hcg was 122. 4.But on Dec 21 2017 I started bleeding with severe body pain like never before and doctors said it was chemical pregnancy and ultrasound pelvis showed everything is cleared. My bleeding stopped on 25 th Dec. 2017 After that I was actively trying to conceive as my gynaecologist suggested that there is no problem in continuing. But on 11 January 2017 I had dark brown discharge when I wiped after which I used pad but there was nothing on pad on 13 January 2017 I was travelling and I started bleeding like and it stopped by 17 January 2017. After which I again actively tried to conceive. But on 27 January 2017 night I had a very light brown discharge on my finger while wiping. So I used pad and that nyt I had unprotected sex too. Next morning on 28 January 2017 I had two three drops of red blood on pad. But after that I did not bleed at all not even a drop. I went to doctor on 2 Nd of Feb and had upt test to check whether hcg level has come down to normal level and the test came negative. I WANT TO ASK WHAT COULD B REASON FOR THIS UNTIMELY BLEEDING OR SPOTTING? Should I CONSIDER IT AS PERIOD OR SPOTTING AND CONSIDERING THE FACT WHAT SHOULD BE THE DUE DATE FOR MY NEXT PERIOD. SHPUL IT B 11 FEB 2017 OR 27 FEB 2016 ACCORDING TO 30 days MENSTRUAL CYCLE? And does spotting effect due date of period? Kindly answer the query as soon as possible as I am worried and answer according all the facts.

Excessive production of prostaglandins is one of the major causes for most signs and symptoms of dysmenorrhea. Primary dysmenorrhea is almost wholly due to this and may be due to a tight cervix, the mouth of the uterus. Such cases improve totally after a normal child birth due to stretching of the uterine musculature. Secondary dysmenorrhea, however, needs proper investigating into in order to know the causative pathology. The underlying pathology needs to be treated to control painful menses. Pain-killers can only offer temporary relief. The common causes of secondary dysmenorrhea are pelvic infections, congestive or inflammatory conditions within the pelvis like endometriosis, uterine tumors such as polyps or fibroids, and the presence of a foreign body such as an intrauterine contraceptive device [IUCD]. Homeopathy has a promising role to play in cases of dysmenorrhea. The medicines are known to reduce the severity of the pain as well as to treat the cause, whenever possible. Every patient with dysmenorrhea may present with a different set of individual symptoms, which are carefully noted while deciding the homeopathic line of treatment. Homeopathic treatment is strongly suggested. you can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance
