Large breasts are not just aesthetically unappealing but can also lead to a lot of structural problems including neck and back pain. This condition, called macromastia, is when either breast weighs more than 500 g. Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is aimed at reducing the size of the breasts followed by reshaping them if required. This will not just produce an aesthetically appealing image for the person but also can help relieve problems like neck and back pain.
Indications - When should you have breast reduction?
- There is constant back, shoulder, head, and/or neck pain
- Constant irritation of skin under the breasts
- Breathing difficulty
- Grooves on the shoulders from bra straps
- Poor posture
- Numbness in parts of the breasts and upper chest due to excessive weight
- Unhappy with the overall appearance
While these are the problems that mandate breast reduction, the following is a pointer towards who can go for the surgery. Needless to say, not everybody is a candidate.
- The person should have overall good health
- No active diseases or pre-existing medical conditions.
- Skin has adequate elasticity and can resume a firm consistency after the surgery
- Emotional and mental stability with loads of patience
- Done with childbirth and breastfeeding
- Be practical and have realistic expectations from the surgery
Overview of the procedure:
It is most often a combination of liposuction and gland reduction. Liposuction forms a small part of the procedure and it is the gland reshaping that actually reduces the size. There are many ways to do it and different surgeons may prefer different techniques depending on the size of the breast, quality of the skin, expectation of the patient. The two most common ways are one in which the final scars lie around the areola and vertically downwards and the other in which the scar is anchor shaped with an additional horizontal limb along the breast crease under the breast.
To achieve the best desired results, the first step is to have a detailed discussion. A thorough physical examination followed by mammographic evaluation will help arrive at the best possible technique. Along with the desired results, also discuss side effects, limitations, risks, postoperative care, recovery, and of course costs. Other factors are also to be considered including age, gestational history, feeding history, medication allergies, and detailed medical history including bleeding disorders, lung disorders, cardiac issues, etc.
A decision is then finally made to go ahead with breast reduction, which will not just improve her looks but also her confidence and relieve her of problems that back ache and neck pain.

The chronic alcoholic first of all must make a firm resolve stop drinking. One should abstain from alcohol all at once for the habit cannot be got rid of in gradual stages.
The most effective way to treat alcoholism is to build the body's nutritional integrity so as to prevent craving for stimulants like drinks. The patients should be put on a cleansing juice fast for at least 10 days in the beginning. During this period, he should have the juice of an orange every two hours from 8 am. To 8 pm. The juice may be diluted with warm water if desired. If orange juice does not agree, grapes juices may be taken. Each day while fasting, bowels should be cleansed of effete and poisonous matter thrown off by the self- cleansing process set up by the body. This can be achieved by warm water enema.
During the juice fast, the patient will usually feel no craving for alcohol. This will a good 10-day start towards breaking the drinking habit and would help remove not only the physical dependence but also the psychological factors. After the initial fast on juices, the optimum diet of vital nutrients is essential. Such a diet should consist of whole grains, cereals, nuts, seeds and sprouts, fresh fruits and vegetable.
It is advisable that in the beginning of the treatment, the patient is given a suitable substitute to relieve the craving if and when such a craving occurs. The best substitute drink for alcohol is a glass of fresh fruit juice, sweetened with honey if desired. In the alternative, wholesome candy may be taken. The patient should always have easily available juice, candy or other snacks to be taken between meals if he feels a craving for a stimulant.
All refined foods such as sugar, white rice, macaroni products and white flour and meat should be avoided. The patient should eat several small, meals a day in preference to two or three large once and avoid strong condiments such as pepper, mustard and chilly. He should not smoke as this will only increase his desire for alcohol.
Apples are considered valuable in the treatment of alcoholism as there, use removes intoxication and reduces the craving for wines and other intoxication liquors. The raw celery juice is also considered useful. It has a sobering effect and is an antidote to alcohol.
In addition to proper nutrition, plenty of rest and outdoor exercise are necessary. The healthy condition of the appetite center, which controls the craving for alcohol is improved by exercise. Yogic asans for general health such as padmasan, vajrasan, vakrasan, paschimotanasan, yoga mudra, bhujangasan, halasan and shalabhasana, and yogic kriyas like jalneti, kunjal and simple pranayamas like kapalbhati, anuloma-viloma, shitali and sitkari will be beneficial.
Copious drinking of water, hot fomentations on the stomach and abdomen with a wet girdle pack between application are also effective water treatments for alcoholism.
And finally, it will be advisable to follow the ten commandments to prevent alcoholism. These are:
Never drink when you 'need one':
Space your drinks, taking a second drink 30 minutes after the first and a third an hour after the second; dilute your alcohol;
Keep an accurate and truthful record of the amount and number of drinks you take;
Never conceal the amount of alcohol you drink;
Do not drink on an empty stomach;
Stop drinking on 'signal' (signals are lunch, dinner, fatigue, sex stimulation, boredom, frustration and bedtime);
Make it a rule never to take a drink to escape discomfort-either physical or mental; and never, never take a drink in the morning thinking it will cure a hangover.
Research has shown that chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after eating or drinking can help reduce tooth decay risk by up to 40 percent !
