1.. Go for fasting once a week. You can go for absolute fasting or rely on a liquid diet to digest ama (toxin). Fasting should be followed by hot fomentation or by taking a bath with lukewarm water or steam bath. 2.. After fasting and fomentation, mix powdered long pepper, black pepper and dried ginger in equal quantities and take 1 teaspoon of this powdered mix with lukewarm water twice a day. This will help you restore your digestive fire. 3.. Take one tablespoon of castor oil before going to bed, once or twice a week. It helps in cleansing ama (toxin) build up and balancing vata. 4.. Mix equal quantities of powdered fenugreek seeds, turmeric and ginger powder. Take one teaspoon daily in the morning and evening. 5.. For dry fomentation of the affected joints, take a cloth and fold it into four, fill it with hot and sand make a potli (bag) out of it. Use this bundle for the fomentation of different joints. This is very helpful in reducing pain and swelling. 6.Warm mustard oil or sesame oil (1 teaspoon) with 3-4 cloves of crushed garlic and 1 tsp of ajwain (carom) seeds until it roasts to a reddish brown colour. Ensure that it does not get burned. Massage this oil on your affected areas. After that do hot fomentation with salt potli (bag). 7. Take 2 tab yograj guggul twice daily with luke warm water chew them well before swallowing for 1month. 8. send ur Xray and other reports for further medication.

My wife, aged 45 years, is suffering from osteoarthritis and is having acute pain on the right leg now. She had this problem initially on her left leg since the delivery of her second child and has been diagnosed as the above condition and was under medication (both ayurvedic and allopathic) for a few months till the pain got subsided. As this problem persists, we have already consulted with an orthopedic about the nagging pain and he has suggested a knee replacement surgery based on the x-ray images taken recently. We request an opinion from you on the alternative ways available (for instance, ayurvedic).

At 45 years it is unlikely that the cause of your wife problem is osteoarthritis. Her diagnosis needs to be confirmed by a proper evaluation by a rheumatologist. Please meet a good rheumatologist before going in for ant surgery. This is because in case her problem is due to some other disease other than osteoarthritis then she is likely to have problems in the knee again EVEN after surgery.

Apply hot fomentation twice daily. Avoid bending in front. Postural correction- sit tall, walk tall. Extension exercises x 15 times x twice daily. Bhujang asana. Core strengthening exercises. Back stretching. Do the cat/cow stretch.

Apply hot fomentation twice daily. Avoid bending in front. Postural correction- sit tall, walk tall. Extension exercises x 15 times x twice daily - lying on tummy, take left arm up for 3 seconds, then bring it down, right arm up for 3 seconds, bring down. Bring right leg up, hold for 3 seconds, bring it down. Then right leg up and hold for 3 seconds and bring it down. Repeat twice a day- 10 times. Bhujang asana -- lie flat on your stomach, keeping the palms out, bend the neck backward, take a deep breath and while holding it for 6 seconds, raise the chest up. Release breath and relax your body. Repeat the exercise 15 times twice daily. Core strengthening exercises- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day.

There is a fun saying that anybody who has a back is going to have back pain. Jokes apart, its a stark reality that we are witnessing and will continue to witness in the coming decades due to the over dependence on machines for day to day activities and a higher prevalence of sedentary life style, especially among the young generation whose work depends on computers and staying indoors mostly.

90% people suffer from back pain in their lifetime, among them a fair number need medical help for the same.

Symptoms may include:

Difficulty in sitting/walking/standing due to back pain
Pain radiating to buttock, thigh, and or leg
Muscle spasm and stiffness, sometimes in the morning or at the end of the day
Soreness / tenderness in spine
Possible causes may be:

Strain of muscle or ligament - most common
Lumbar disc herniation (disc prolapsed/SlipDisc) - Pain mainly in buttock, leg and foot (sciatica)
Facet/spinal joint arthritis - usually causes slow back pain and leads to referred pain in thigh as the disease advances
Spinal canal stenosis and spondylolisthesis-narrowing of space available for spinal cord/nerves in the spinal tunnel -leading to sciatica and back pain that typically increases with standing /walking.
Spinal compression fracture - sudden onset of pain especially in postmenopausal women, osteoporotic individuals and long term steroid use, especially in asthmatics.
Less common causes can be:

Infection
Ankylosing Spondylitis
Coccydynia
Piriformis syndrome
Spinal tumours
Treatment

Treatment depends upon primary cause of pain. A large number of patients improve by conservative treatment or natural healing but short period of rest, reduced activity, analgesics/painkiller medication and physical therapy etc. help in recovery.

In some acute and non-responding cases, patients need Injection therapy where medicine is directly injected in and around the painful nerve/joint that provides short to long term relief.

In patients not responding to conservative/injection therapy, surgical treatment is offered. Depending upon the cause it may vary from keyhole surgery, microscopic surgery, minimally invasive spine surgery or open surgery. Contrary to public perception, spinal surgeries achieve the desired goals in 80-90% of the cases when correctly indicated and there is hardly any risk of paralysis nowadays.

Hi, My Dad has Uric Acid problem. His uric acid level came out to be 8. Yearly or within 2 years, he usually gets gout attack. Currently, he is having swelling, pain and redness in his knee. I wanted to know what vegetables and fruits are preferable for him which do not increase the uric acid level and which all vegetables/fruits he should basically avoid. Can you help with a proper diet chart to follow? Also, are mangoes preferable to eat in such condition?

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Normally these sensations are due to underlying causes related to lower back where there could be some nerve impingement, or they can be secondary to a systemic disease. You can start with physical therapy (tens) as a modality and start with low dosages of neuropathic medications like gabapentin and pregabalin and we will se how it goes in 2-3 weeks time. Apply hot fomentation Do SLR- lying straight raise leg upto 35-40 degrees, hold for 5 sec then relax, 10 repetitions each leg, twice daily Do back isometrics- keep a towel roll under lower back, fold knees & press the towel with back, hold for 5 sec then relax, 10 repetitions twice daily Do bridging- lying straight fold knees, raise back upwards, hold for 5 sec then relax, 10 repetitions twice daily Before exercise apply hot pack & after exercise apply cold pack.

Requires detailed investigation and examination. Preliminary investigations suggested: hb, tlc, dlc, esr, blood sugar fasting & pp, uric acid vit d urine r/e x-ray of the affected part. Anyway it may be tried sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick mattress are harmful use no pillow under the head. Do hot fomantation paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab od x10. Do neck, back, knee & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. Do not ignore it. Let it not become beginning of a bigger problem. Make sure that patient is not allergic to any of the medicines that he/she is going to take. If it does not give relief in 4-5days, inform.

I am 19 years old male. I have been doing regular workouts for more than 2 years now. And my workouts includes lot of cardio. I more than 4000 skipping s with jump rope. I am used to it and I don't feel any difficulty. But I recently felt something on back of my leg behind my knees above the calf muscles. It feels like a string or vein or nerve is pulled and tightens and feels like it will tear with a sharp pain only when I straighten my leg. But still I could jump without any pain for more than ever. But after taking rest it starts again. But for your information there is no swelling or pain around the area. But sharp pain do occurs when I try to straighten my leg as if the string will tear? I don't know what it is. Please help me.

Hello dear it's may due to muscle tightness of hamstring or may due to meniscus tear without investigation we can't say properly so please consult with a good orthopaedic doctor for clinical correction. Before it you do 2-3 days hot fermentation and hamstring straching if find relief then continue do this. And yes stop skipping, jumping, climbing stairs, floor sitting, indian toilet and cross leg sitting.
