Hi, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 59. In 2012. She had mastectomy for her left breast. Her tumor size was 2*2*1.5. 15 lymph nodes were dissected. They were free of tumor. Her deep resection plane is also free of tumor. Her er n PR were positive n her was neg. She did not receive any radiation n chemo. Instead she was asked to have letrozole for 5 yrs. I want to know her prognosis.

UICC International Fellow in Oncollogy , ESTRO certification in Head and neck oncology, MD - Radiothrapy
Oncologist, Jamnagar
As per your reports she was pt1n0, hormone receptor positive, her 2 negative disease. In this selected class of patients, we avoid radiation and chemotherapy. And give hormonal treatment only. Having excellent prognosis. To justify role of chemotherapy in this group, we now have a test called oncotype dx (was not available in 2012). But overall your mom in a curative stage. We recommend three monthly follow ups for two years and then six monthly for next three years (total five years). Then yearly life long.

I am 21 years old female. I have a doubt regarding the consumption of caffeine (through tea or coffee). Does caffeine have any affect in breast infections or cancer because I am a bit addicted to coffee.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Caffeine as far as I know doesn't have carcinogenic potential rather some feel it has protective role. Though it may be related to hypertension, anxiety disorders acidity but so far it is not considered carcinogens.

Should You Get a Mammogram?

MHA, PGDPMC, DGO, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Should You Get a Mammogram?

A mammogram is an imaging test where an X-ray is taken to recreate the internal imagery of your breasts. This is a screening test that is widely used to find the earliest signs of cancer. There have been instances where the early signs of cancer have been found up to three years before the actual development of the same. There are a number of benefits and risks in this screening method. So let us find out more about getting a mammogram, and whether or not you should get one.

  • Procedure: A special X-ray machine is used for conducting a mammogram. There is a clear plastic plate on which the specialist will place the breast while another plate will press on the breast from above. While both the plates serve to flatten the breast and hold it still, the X-ray will be taken. Some pressure will be felt and the same steps will be repeated so as to get the side view of the breasts. The same procedure will be repeated for the other breast. Meanwhile, once it is done, you will need to wait so that the technician can check for clarity, and whether or not the procedure needs to be done again. The results of this procedure cannot be relayed by the technician, and all the images will be different because all breasts are slightly different from each other.
  • Preparation: You will need to remember that the process can be a slightly painful one, especially once the pressure gets applied. Many women complain of discomfort and pain. Yet, this discomfort gets over before you know it. The pressure and pain will depend on the size of your breasts and how much they will have to be pressed in order to get a picture. The skill of the technician will also come into play here. One must remember not to get this procedure done a week or so before or after the menstrual cycle, as the breasts tend to be tender around this time, and the pain will be much more.
  • Radiologist: Within a few weeks after the procedure, the radiologist will usually deliver the result. This is the professional who does an accurate reading of the X-ray.
  • Normal and Abnormal Readings: If your mammogram result has a normal reading, then you can resort to getting one done every once in a while. But an abnormal reading will require further X-ray and tests so as to be able to tell for sure.
  • Why should I get one: If you are over 40 and have a family history of such ailments, then you will have to get a mammogram done regularly. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

My father has one kidney and now has 49 grams prostrate we want to cure prostrate please guide. Operation or medicine? and if operation than which type of operation ?

General Surgeon,
I will advice for surgery either turp or lesar prostatectomy. Single kidney is not contraidication on cotarary I will say it is one of indication to avoid load as well as infection of that kidney. Turp or laser prostetectomy is more safe&reliable than trial with medicine.

A Change In The Breast Or Nipple Appearance Any unexplained change in the size or shape of the breast Dimpling anywhere on the breast Unexplained swelling of the breast (especially if on one side only) Unexplained shrinkage of the breast (especially if on one side only) Recent asymmetry of the breasts (Although it is common for women to have one breast that is slightly larger than the other, if the onset of asymmetry is recent, it should be checked.) Nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted Skin of the breast, areola, or nipple that becomes scaly, red, or swollen or may have ridges or pitting resembling the skin of an orange Any Nipple Discharge—Particularly Clear Discharge Or Bloody Discharge It is also important to note that a milky discharge that is present when a woman is not breastfeeding should be checked by her doctor, although it is not linked with breast cancer. My grandfather had non hodgkin lymphoma in the stomach and my father had adenocarcinoma in the stomach. Can this be genetic-do I or my sister have a higher chance of suffering from stomach cancer? Are these two cases related? We are vegetarian. Could it be due to some dietary reason? My grandfather use to smoke and chew tobacco but my father was a teetotaler but obese. How did my father get the more aggressive form of cancer?

Hi still the exact causes of cancer is not very sure in every case. However there is always some risk involved. Because of life style- it might hv turned severe.

Hi! Doctor my question is that my wife age is 32 and he wants to know that whether she can have injections for uterus to prevent any kind of uterus cancer in future. Is this the right age for that or not.

MD - Radiothrapy, MBBS
Oncologist, Pune
There is a vaccine to prevent cervix cancer, but the ideal age for taking it is 9 to 16 years. Skip vaccination can be given till 26. But in your case as age is 32, vaccination is probably not beneficial.

Sir,
It's been 15-20 days. There is no any improvement I got after taking homeopathy medicine for prostate enlargement.
Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. First and foremost, I would advise that you review treatment progress with your homeopath and do as advised. If still not convinced, you can revert with all relevant diagnostics for further naturopathic traction from my end. In the meanwhile, follow a mediterranean diet pattern predominantly and streamline your lifestyle. Try including more of fresh turmeric, tomatoes, cranberry juice, garlic etc all in your diet on a day to day basis. Its important that you stay well hydrated too. Hope this helps. Do take care and all the very best.
