Dear user, welcome to lybrate. You must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. If the task is boring, it is natural that that person will sleep or feel sleepy. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Take care.

Dear lybrate-user. These types of adult thoughts are normal and there is nothing to worry about it. But these thoughts should not be a problem for your daily routine. If the thoughts hinder your daily life, you should think about diversions. Physical exercise, entertainment, social interaction etc will help you divert yourself from those thoughts. Take care.

I am not able to speak properly I stammer especially when I am nervous or tensed. I can speak fluently with parents but am not able to speak in front of anybody else. It occurs more with some alphabets like m, n, p, j, k etc. What should I do to speak properly?

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology
Psychologist, Palakkad
Dear lybrate-user, welcome to lybrate. Stammering is" speaking with sudden involuntary pauses and a tendency to repeat the initial letters of words" or" say something with difficulty, repeating the initial letters of words and with sudden involuntary pauses" stammering could be due to two reasons. First reason is vocal cord misalignment. Second is psychological performance anxiety. First of all you should consult an ent specialist and evaluate your vocal chords. If there is problem, ent specialist will be able to correct it. If there is no problem with your vocal chords, you should consult a psychologist for stammer therapy. Take care.

Behaviour Problems Among Children - Things Parents Should Know and Never Ignore!

Behaviour Problems Among Children - Things Parents Should Know and Never Ignore!

Diagnosis & Management of Behavioural Disorders in Children

Disruptive behavioural disorders are complicated and may include many different factors working in combination. For example, a child who exhibits the delinquent behaviours of Conduct Disorder may also have ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, and a difficult home life.

Diagnosis methods may include:

  1. Diagnosis by a specialist: Paediatrician, Psychologist or Child Psychiatrist.
  2. In-depth Interviews with the parents, child and teachers.
  3. Behaviour check lists or standardised Questionnaires.
  4. A diagnosis is made if the child’s behaviour meets the criteria for disruptive behaviour disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders from the American Psychiatric Association.

It is important to rule out acute stressors that might be disrupting the child’s behaviour. For example, a sick parent or victimising by other children might be responsible for sudden changes in a child’s typical behaviour and these factors have to be considered initially.

How can habit disorders affect behaviour?

Most children develop certain repetitive behaviours at an early age, but it is the frequency, persistence or its effects on the overall well-being of the child which could qualify it as a ‘Disorder’. These habits include

  1. Repetitive sucking of the thumb
  2. Biting of the nails
  3. Hitting his own self
  4. Pulling at his own hair
  5. Holding on to his breath just for the sake of it

This refers to the behavioural issues of your child which cause the child to misbehave more often; this can be due to a variety of reasons such as Improper Parenting, Persistent Family problems, Child Abuse or Neglect, or any other incident that has traumatised the child in the past, both Psychological problems or Medical illnesses etc.

Preventive Measures:

  1. Respect Others Space - Your child may be very excited to tell you about some special event or happening in school, but teach him not to interrupt you when you are at work. He must learn to respect other people’s space and have patience while dealing with people. Otherwise, he would not be able to take rejections and thus be inconsiderate in his attitude.
  2. Adjustment with Peers - Monitor how he behaves with his playmates. Stop him when he happens to fight with his playmates or fights with them aggressively and teach him how exactly to behave with people.
  3. Firm Discipline - You should deal with stubbornness with a bit of high-handedness. Look at your child right into the eye and tell him what is expected of him. Be tough, but not rude.
  4. Balance Independence - Monitor his use of PCs, laptops and mobiles. Well, that doesn’t mean you need to loom over everything he does on his gadget, but do try to watch over the content whether it is inappropriate or not. But remember to never really pry and barge into his privacy. Respect that and you can still humour him.

Treatment of behavioural disorders in children

Untreated children with behavioural disorders may grow up to be dysfunctional adults. Generally, the earlier the intervention, the better the outcome is likely to be.  Treatment is usually multifaceted and depends on the particular disorder and various factors contributing to it, which may include:

  1. Parental education – For example, teaching parents how to communicate with and manage their children.
  2. Family therapy – The entire family is helped to improve communication and problem-solving skills.
  3. Cognitive behavioural therapy – To help the child to control their thoughts and behaviour.
  4. Social training – The child is taught important social skills, such as how to have a conversation or play cooperatively with others.
  5. Anger management – The child is taught how to recognise the signs of their growing frustration and given a range of coping skills designed to defuse their anger and aggressive behaviour. Relaxation techniques and stress management skills are also taught.
  6. Support for associated problems – For example, a child with a learning difficulty will benefit from professional support.
  7. Use of Reinforcement – Many children with behavioural disorders experience repeated failures at school and in their interactions with others. Encouraging the child to excel in their particular talents (such as sport) can help to build self-esteem using positive reinforcements both verbal and non-verbal.
  8. Medication – To help control impulsive behaviours if required so.

I am feeling very stressful because of my workload. What should I have to feel stress free.
You are feeling stress because your are unable to divide your time between personal life and professional life. I understand that the work demands more from you. But you should understand that your brain and body needs some rest so that it can re gains its energy levels. Firstly, don't take tension of work completion, and use your time peacefully and plan things. You get better ideas when you are not disturbed. Try to take time out of your busy schedule to relax yourself. Maybe you can go out for a movie, dinner or just family or friends outing. Just take few hour from your busy schedule. You will see things will change and you can work better and happily.

Eggs are one good choice to nurture while you are in the dieting plan. They don’t show any side effects to your heart where as cut your fat. Serving eggs in your breakfast won’t make you feel a snack for long hours, it fills the tummy full which eventually calls for less intake in the next snack.

I am doing my chartered accountant course and I am in my IPCC level. I am also doing training with a CA. I have problems in my sleep. When ever I close my eyes there are about 50 or 60 thoughts running in my mind. I was a calm person but now my anger is growing. I had thrown my laptop last week. I need urgent help. What is happening to me?

You seem to bro stressed out due to work, and not being able to manage stress effectively. Stress and anxiety for a long duration may translate into agitated depression and mood swings as in your case. If that is happening often, consult me for a treatment plan, which includes some medicines to relax you and some behaviour techniques for anger management. Good luck. Take care

I always feel depressed due to breakup with my girlfriend so how to get rid of from this.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
It looks like you are pining for her after the break up. Have you analyzed why you two had this fallout? If it your fault, then apologize and see if she is amenable. If not you may have done something quite unforgiveable. But you say you cry every night, and you have lost so much of weight and friends that it seems you have discovered that a heterosexual relationship is very different from normal relations. It is very intense, and the very thing that makes it attractive (the opposite sex and all its nuances), can also be its nemesis. You must learn what that difference was about your past relations and this particular one and find out how to live with a love relationship. There must be love, respect, commitment, honesty, trust, and freedom in the romantic scene. If however, this is final, then remove all associations of hers: gifts, notes, letters, cards, emails, and any reminders to get her out of your system, not just the mind. Keep the good memories but don’t indulge in them. Get back to your old pals and revive those contacts. Normally when we get a girl friend, we drop all our friends and live exclusively with her. This is not a good thing to do, generally. So do get back to them and get into good social circles. They will help you get over her. Do not talk ill or malign your ex to your friends, whatever was the reason. That is unfortunately a very bad habit many of us have – we must still respect her reputation and treat her with dignity. Since this break up is so serious for you that suicidal thoughts are also plaguing you, do meet up with a counselor and talk about your feelings, openly. This is not the end of the world and she is not the only girl in life. You will find another but learn not to repeat the mistakes that led to the breakup. This time choose wisely and behave like a true gentleman.
