Dear lybrate-user, Welcome to Lybrate. Tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. Nicotine and other chemicals can cause cancer of different types and areas. Throat cancer, mouth cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer and brain problems can result. Over and above smoking may also increase the risk factor of heart attack and brain stroke. Please quit smoking. The best method is to leave it and continue with your will power. There are other methods like Nicotine Replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy combined. If you’re ready to stop smoking and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from nicotine addiction and abuse abuse—no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating nicotine addiction is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn’t easy. But it’s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who fill follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of smoking. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan and cooperate with your psychiatrist / psychologist. Mind power building therapy, motivation therapy etc should help you doing so. Take care.

No one feels unhappy and insecure without reason. Something would have happened in the past or your childhood because of which you are feeling this way. Please see a counsellor for further diagnosis and treatment. In your diet you should have vitamin and minerals rich diet with good amount of omega 3 oils. Stop consuming junk and heavy foods. Exercising the body and mind will help you too. Please read my tip on anxiety, depression and negative thoughts. Please click on private chat for a personalised session.

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. Usually during adolescent period, due to high hormonal activity, the attention span is less. Irritability is more. It is normal to have these problems during adolescent period. Your child needs to be active so as to regain the normalcy. I suggest online counseling and motivation therapy. Take care.

1>do some leg exercises - apparently some easy leg lifts, squats, or your leg exercise of choice can help divert blood flow to the legs and away from the brain. This can help quiet the mind, making it easier to sleep. Exercise at least three hours before bedtime so the body has sufficient time to wind down before hitting the sack. 2> eat for sleep - eat foods high in magnesium, like almonds and spinach, and foods high in vitamin b complex, like leafy green vegetables, nuts, and legumes. 3> try a hot bath or shower -stepping from warm water into that pre-cooled bedroom will cause body temperatures to drop slightly, which can trigger sleepy feelings by slowing down metabolic activity. Hope the above tips will help you to have a sound sleep! regards.

I can't remember what I studied. So what should to remember what have I studied. Help me!

Ph. D - Psychology
Psychologist, Margao
How to improve memory Pay attention and concentrate! Relate to the information you are learning. The more personal the information becomes, the easier it is to remember it. Ask yourself how it makes you feel. Ask yourself where else you have heard this. Ask yourself whether there is something in your personal life related to this piece of information. Repeat the information: Come back to it more than one time. This has been found in tons of studies: repeated information is easier to recall. Spaced retrieval (a method with which a person is cued to recall a piece of information at different intervals) is one of the rare methods that show some results with Alzheimer’s patients. Elaborate on the information: think about it. Things that are concrete and have a clear meaning are easier to remember than abstract and vague ones. Trying to attach meaning to the information you are trying to memorize will make it easier to recall later. Your brain will have more cues to look for. For instance, try to picture the information in your head. Pictures are much easier to memorize than words. To remember figures and percentages it is much easier to picture these in a graph for instance. Relate the information to something you know already.

Counsellor is non medical person. Psychiatrist is medical person. You need counselling psychologist. Past is past then now ok yourself. Why do you worry about future. It is not happening. What we wish internally. That may happen in future also. So think in positive manner the future is also positive. So be optimistic. Do not be depressed. Feel comfortable and enjoy yourself. Be happy with others. Ok best of luck.

THINK BETTER LIVE BETTER. WELLNESS SERIES
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is talking therapies that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave. It is most commonly used to treat anxiety and depression, but can be useful for other mental and physical health problems.

CBT cannot remove your problems but it can help you deal with them in a more positive way. It is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected and that negative thoughts and feelings can trap you in a vicious cycle. CBT aims to help you crack this cycle by breaking down overwhelming problems into smaller parts and showing you how to change these negative patterns to improve the way you feel.

Unlike some other talking treatments, CBT deals with your current problems, rather than focusing on issues from your past. It looks for practical ways to improve your state of mind on a daily basis. CBT has been shown to be an effective way of treating a number of different mental health conditions. In addition to depression or anxiety disorders, CBT can also help people with obsessive disorder, postphobias, eating disorderssuch as anorexiaand bulimia, sleep problems such as insomnia, problems related to alcohol abuse, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

CBT can help you to change how you think (cognitive) and what you do (behaviour). These changes can help you to feel better and breathe better. Once you are de-stressed, there is less cognitive load and your breathing centre in brain is relaxed and less stimulated. It looks for ways to improve your state of mind now.

A situation ? a problem, event or difficult situation.

From this can follow thoughts, emotions, physical feelings and actions. Each of these areas can affect the others.

How you think about a problem can affect how you feel physically and emotionally. All these areas of life can connect like this: fiveareas.

What happens in one of these areas can affect all the others. There are helpful and unhelpful ways of reacting to most situations, depending on how you think about it. The way you think can be helpful or unhelpful.

The Situation: You have had a bad day. You are fed up? Go out shopping. As you walk down the road, someone you know walks by and, apparently, ignores you.

This starts a cascade of thoughts, emotions and action which can range from concern for the other person to actually getting in touch with the other person to find if all is well with him.

The negative way of dealing with it involves being down on yourself imagining the person does not like you, complaining of cramps or illness and finally going home to avoid the person.

The same situation has led to two very different results; depending on how you thought about the situation. How you think has affected how you felt and what you did.

So, in case you thought negatively, you have to change your thoughts and actions, pinpoint the problem, address it and find goals.

Then move towards achieving them. Evidence shows CBT works.

Video Games and Neurological Problems Associated with Them

DNB (Psychiatry), DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
Video Games and Neurological Problems Associated with Them

Your mother has often yelled at you for playing video games for long hours but obviously you haven’t paid heed to it. Such is the obsession with video games that they don’t let you rest unless you have championed all the levels in the virtual interface. Here is the source of all problems. Studies have revealed that video games have a direct relation to neurological disorders. As a result, many health experts across the world consider video game as a kind of health abuse.

People who play action-oriented video games are at higher risks. The more you indulge in these kinds of games, the more they are going to affect the hippocampus section of your brain. It is that part of the brain which is considered to be the centre of your nervous system, memory, and emotion. This has a detrimental effect on your overall brain health.

Let us see some of the signs which may indicate the onset of certain complications arising from an over indulgence in these games.
1. You spend hours on the computer or related gaming devices and devote lesser hours for your family and friends.
2. You get agitated when someone stops you midway through the game
3. You become socially isolated and show signs of occasional mood swings
4. You are unable to keep a track of time once you start playing
5. You repeatedly neglect your studies, resulting in a dip in performance at school

Why does this happen?
All of the above signs indicate that sooner or later you might develop neurological problems. When you spend an excessive number of hours on playing and navigating through the games, the ‘hippocampus’ portion of your brain shows signs of decreased gray matter. As a result, the volume of the hippocampus shrinks, causing severe nerve related disorders such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, depression, and overall general stress.

One of the biggest reasons behind this is a lack of self-control. Most of the video games will encourage you to steal cars, run away after a theft and kill your enemies. Moreover, if you succeed, you are rewarded. This naturally unleashes a blatant urge for the gratification of all these awkward desires in your real life too. Hence, once you are encountered with the reality, you tend to show violent behavior.

Hello, ajeet, I can understand your worry, this is a problematic condition and most of the men do come across this problem. Sexual problems do have a treatment. Chronic illness do contribute to loss of libido, reduced interest in sexual activities, premature ejaculation as well. Though their are no structural anomalies detected by psychological factors can also contribute to these conditions. Most common psychological factors includes: depressive states, anxiety states, acute stress, relational issues, burnout etc. Few medications also can contribute to such states such antiviral, interferons, betablockers etc. Hence to get a complete picture about your problems, a detailed evaluation is necessary. Also this will help in formulating a management plan comprising of both pharmacological approach as well as psychological interventions, so that you can get recover in a better way and can have a better functional life ahead.
