He has Dyslexia. Please try Counselling. I need further information about school/Home environment and any other behavioural changes you notice. Dyslexia is an ongoing difficulty that has to be managed by parents and teachers together. Parents specially should be keenly aware of the symptoms and many manifestations of a Learning Disability, and initiate immediate action if they suspect anything. The Dyslexia Association of India recommends a comprehensive test if need be. This assessment can serve to put at ease many a worry that may be plaguing a parents mind. It can serve as a platform for them to be able to understand what is actually going on in the child's academic sphere and how as the first line of defense you as a parent can help your child. We would like to share with you, that an assessment with the Dyslexia Association of India is a Not For Profit activity. In fact it is time and money well invested. Its is an investment in knowing the strengths and weakness of your child and making an attempt to understand the child better. As a parent there are several important facts to consider where you child is concerned. Early intervention and diagnosis is an absolute must. Several conditions can induce dyslexic type tendencies as far as academic performance is concerned. Hearing Impairment, Poor vision, Glare from the board, bright light, supersensitive hearing. Making sure the child feels valued and loved. This is just not the parents responsibility, this is important at school too. Remember your child will spend more time with other adults and their peers than they spend with you. A dyslexic child will probably not be able to remember the stuff he needs for school the next day. It is important to work with the teacher to make sure you know what he needs for school. A good teacher will help; remember it is in their interest too to make sure the day goes smoothly! Help pack their school bag. Routine can be good. Remember a Dyslexic child will also have strengths that you may not, he or she may be artistic, musical. They are of course just as intelligent as their non-dyslexic peers! Its just works differently. Their long-term memory may be better than yours. They have to operate in visual and imaginative environment, as adults we get out of practice. If they have to research something for school, get the video or tape. Good teaching is not just talk and chalk While the symptoms relating to Dyslexia have been described earlier on, parents may want to keep the following in mind where their children are concerned. These three issues are the basic building blocks of academic performance and any difficulty usually shows up here first. Reading Reading and the problems that the child may display. Hesitant and laboured reading, especially out loud Omitting or adding extra words Reading at a reasonable rate, but with a low level of comprehension Failure to recognize familiar words Missing a line or reading the same line twice Losing the place or using a finger or marker to keep the place Difficulty in pin-pointing the main idea in a passage Finding difficulty in the use of dictionaries, directories, encyclopaedias Writing Writing and the problems you may see. Poor standard of written work compared to oral ability Poor handwriting with badly formed letters Good handwriting but production of work extremely slow Badly set out work with spellings crossed out several times Spells the same word differently in one piece of work Has difficulty with punctuation and grammar Confuses upper and lower case letters Writes a great deal but loses track of the main idea. Wanders off from the main point. Writes very little but to the point Has difficulty taking notes in lessons Finds organization of work and personal timetable difficult Clearly knows more than he can commit to paper Mathematics Mathematics and the issues associated with Maths. It is not Mathematics that is the problem with the child. Mathematics being a pure language is fairly straightforward. It is the same problems that we see in the other subjects across the curriculum that is the main issue. So what are the main issues? Difficulty remembering tables and formulae Finds sequencing difficult Confusing signs such as + and x The child can think at a high level in mathematics, but needs a calculator to remember basic facts Misreads questions that include words Confuses directions - left and right Finds mental arithmetic at speed very difficult Does not put the number in the tenth and hundred?s place correctly and the decimal under the decimal when adding or subtracting.

I am 19 years old I have difficulty in remembering things from past few months and I am not able to concentrate on anything my father is a victim of schizophrenia is it correct that I will tend to have the same problem. Please recommend me what should I do.

MBBS, MRCPsych
Psychiatrist, Visakhapatnam
Dear lybrate-user You have asked an important question. Schizophrenia may run in families. It is known through studies that offsprings are at a higher risk of developing Schzophrenia if a parent is affected. Also onset of Schizophrenia most often tends to be in young adulthood. Those at risk of developing Schizophrenia may present with what is called as a prodrome whereby they may experience changes in their mental wellbeing and impaired social abilities. This is seen as a gradual deterioration in performance at school or work, being withdrawn, not socializing well with family or outside, difficulty concentrating, decline in self care and inappropriate actions. Having said that impaired concentration may occur due to other mental health conditions too such depression, attention deficit disorder or distractions due to personal life circumstances. Given the description you provided I would highly recommend you to seek psychiatric consultation to understand the cause of your inability to concentrate, being mindful of your concern to rule out onset of schizophrenia. And only upon thorough assessment would the psychiatrist be able to advise on the actual nature of the problem and provide counselling about your problem and initiate treatment if required.

Dear, welcome to lybrate. Tension during and before examination is called performance anxiety. To overcome exam related performance anxiety, you should know yourself, your subject, exams and your study patterns. Once you study systematically and to the point, there is no need to be panic before or during the exams. Effective learning techniques should help you. Take care.

Hi Librate user Good to know, you are preparing for civil services exams and all the best for your exam. At first you should try to motivate yourself for your studies. Think about your successful friend or relatives and to be like them. Think of what you will achieve by studies. Tell yourself that after you achieve your goal, you will free to have fun. Try to take a short break after every hour. If your brain has to concentrate consistently for hours, at a time, it loses processing power and your cocentration power slips. Thanks.

You may be experiencing a naturally induced regression fro some childhood related unresolved issue that is now surfacing to seek a resolution. You could meet with a counselor along with your parents and find out some causes for your tendency. You do not mention your age but if you are near abouts your late adolescence, some of this are accountable. I suspect that the adolescent issues with regard to hormones may be affecting your ability to concentrate and remember. When the hormones play up, it lasts for a period of close to two years and during that time you could be influenced by three signs directly impacted by the chemical: you will tend to become aggressive and rebellious, you will become sexually active, and you will have acne and pimple problems. The hormonal imbalances may not only impact your memory because of the chemical but also bring some distractions that come with it. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem-solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning, at least, five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position, you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There is some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.

I smoke daily 4 cigarettes. But when I quit those for two to three days my complexion looks good. What's that. Im 18 years of age.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Cigarette smoke does effect the skin and makes it form wrinkles. I do not know that it can cause good complexion so fast but does damage the skin, especially on the face. Any way there is no mystery about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and so without worrying only about your skin my advice is for you to quit it soon before it becomes too much and therefore too difficult. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing in the habit. The information is really scary. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest. All the damage you incurred earlier because of the smoking can be reverted back to normal in quick time just like you experienced with the skin changes.

Dear User, In general I could say, feeling low after some one leaves who was attached with you; is obvious thing. Many people feel stressed. As far as I understand, you need to feel relaxed and that is why you are asking for help. In such cases, the thing which is important is your daily living and functioning. If the symptoms are troubling you in any area of your life like personal, social, occupational then you must seek help from psychiatrist in private.

--Need Help with Hypnotherapy-- Been suffering from lot of anxiety and severe depression over the guilt of committing something which is morally wrong according to me. Although it hasn't affected anyone, its not a crime and no one was hurt at all and it means nothing to others, but its something I never wanted to do and hated it to the core. My principles and moral values never allowed me even to go close to it. Had been judging people in a bad way for years about it. But somehow I ended up doing the same thing. Earlier I used to walk away from such people. But I can not walk away from myself! And I can not forgive myself for the sin I have committed and now I just want to die. I can't live with myself remembering I did something I never wanted to do. Is there any way to erase that event from my mind? I just want to delete that part, I want to delete just that one day and that moment from my life. I have heard a hypnotherapist can do it? Please help! Please help me forget (erase) it forever!

HI LIBRATE USER Feeling guilty, it really make you feel like a huge burden is on your shoulder, but the good thing about this was that you could use your guilt as a sign of what priorities you needed to change your life. Everyone make mistakes, making mistakes is what make us human. You should appreciate yourself for your inner honesty and try to improve your life. Focus on forgiving yourself for what you have done, learn from the past and do better in your future. An affirmation of positive statement would be encourage and uplift your thoughts. Try this-"I am a good person and deserve the best despite my past actions" I am not perfect, I make mistakes, but I can learn from my past. Try to tell yourself daily for one week and give your feedback. Thanks.

Hi lybrate-user It seems like you have had some very difficult experiences that continue to make you feel distressed. It is natural for anyone to continue feeling worried and stressed if traumatic experiences are not processed (which can happen for many reasons ranging from adverse childhood experiences to lack of adequate resources in the present). Generally, as we try to 'delete' or 'forgive and move on' without working through the unpleasant emotions, we end up getting even more worried. To use a cliche, its like the elephant in the room. Also, in such situations, in addition to the difficult events, we also start doubting ourselves and worrying about our inability to forget and move on. This only adds to the distress, and can be a very frustrating cycle. To begin with, please give yourself time, patience and care you deserve, in the same way as you would care for someone you love. I think you are likely to find it helpful to seek help from a qualified psychologist who understands trauma, and who will be able to help you work through these concerns. All the best.

Dear lybrate user, please understand certain things first! you are only 21 hence you need not say/think that you are single for a" very long time" 2. Even if you have achieved full sexual growth, this is your age to concentrate more on your studies and career. 3. There has to be some strong reason why you are having sexual feelings towards your mother. May be your father is absent from your life, may be your mother looked at you as her support and crossed her boundaries or she is looking at you for support and loves you a lot and also thinks that you are still a child and is treating you like that. But she may not have any sexual feelings towards you. Please understand that each relation is enjoyable and is healthy only when certain boundaries are maintained. Understand your relation with your mother and maintain your boundaries. You can masturbate to satisfy your sexual needs, but fantasizing sex with your mother will very harmful, emotionally for both of you. Please understand that if you just keep imagining things like this, one day you might do it actually, in the spurt of that moment and then you will carry huge shame, guilt for the rest of your life. Now, it is advisable for you to keep some other women to take care of your mother. You need to stay away from her. Stop sharing the same bed. Spend more time with people of your age and who have similar interests. Try to find a life partner of your age and enjoy life.

Dear lybrate-user, please do not think about your fathers affairs. He is not doing any injustice towards. If you go his age then you think about his problem. Now you feel it is mistake. But in my opinion it is not mistake. How we know his personal problems and personal interests. So do not be depressed. Do not think about the past depressive status. Feel very good friendly with him. Please share any one close friend girls only. Do not share with boys. If it is problem leave it. Ignore the problem that is his problem not yours so do not concentrate and do not think about this problem. It is right as his age. It is not right to think about his problem. If you cross this 40 then you can understand ok do not feel about it.

I am very stressed and mentally disturbed, I like to think always how to commit suicide, pls advice me what to do?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
If you feel depressed, it's best to do something about it? depression doesn't just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor or therapist, here are 5 things you can do to feel better. 1. Exercise. Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk every day? or dance, jog, or bike if you prefer. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active. But make yourself do it anyway (ask a friend to exercise with you if you need to be motivated). Once you get in the exercise habit, it won't take long to notice a difference in your mood. In addition to getting aerobic exercise, some yoga poses can help relieve feelings of depression. Try downward-facing dog or legs-up-the-wall pose (you can find these poses on yoga websites). Two other aspects of yoga? breathing exercises and meditation? can also help people with depression feel better. 2. Nurture yourself with good nutrition. Depression can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat. If depression has affected your eating, you'll need to be extra mindful of getting the right nourishment. Proper nutrition can influence a person's mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don't feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going). 3. Identify troubles, but don't dwell on them. Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what's got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. Once you air out these thoughts and feelings, turn your attention to something positive. Take action to solve problems. Ask for help if you need it. Feeling connected to friends and family can help relieve depression. It may also help them feel there's something they can do instead of just watching you hurt. 4. Express yourself. With depression, a person's creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked. Exercise your imagination (painting, drawing, doodling, sewing, writing, dancing, composing music, etc.) and you not only get those creative juices flowing, you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself. Find something to laugh about? a funny movie, perhaps. Laughter helps lighten your mood. 5. Try to notice good things. Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings. Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal. In a situational depression like this you need to achieve more mind control. Yoga and meditation are good. Also read or listen to music if you like it. And divert your mind by talking to good friend or relatives. Is your sleep deprived? you need constant support. Ask privately with all your details. Have you tested thyroid any time?

However much it may hurt her you have to honest with her without being rude. Tell her that your parents are looking for another girl from your community and that you cannot be with her at all. If you are definite and clear, she will get the message and move on. Any slightest indication that there is some possibility, she will live on that hope and continue to nurture her feelings for you.
