I am 45 years old medium healthy female, housewife, busy with all household daily works and last 02 years suffering from more belly/stomach. Also earlier about 10 years before I had slip disc problem at l-4/l-5. Nowadays again severe backache I am facing. Please guide me and suggestion.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Well you have mentioned that you earlier were having same problem, but was it ok in between or do you have these symptoms off and on? also as you have also gained weight, the problems may intensify in the near future. Also degenerative changes in spine occur especially if disc spaces collapse because it increases overall pressure on facet joints of spine and adjacent discs as well. But my advise is that if your pain is still a localized lower back pain with no other leg pain, numbness or any other nerve related symptoms, then - start leading an active lifestyle which means daily walks for around 2-3 km in a day - intensive back exercises to strengthen your back muscles - abdominal strengthening and other general conditioning exercises - to maintain proper posture of your back at all times in a day - physical therapy with modalities can be done initially for some time although mainstay will remain your exercises - take anti-inflammatory medication for 5-7 days to get initial relief - maintain proper calcium and vitamin d intake also please get one digital x ray done and send both films and report to me x ray ls spine ( ap & lateral-flexion and extension views) do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Thanks & regards Dr. Akshay kumar saxena Consultant orthopaedics fortis hospital, new delhi.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. I can actually advise you regarding your spine issues if you can send me a detailed history with associated symptoms for your back region, also please send me investigations which you have done till now and treatment taken as well. As far as your chest symptoms goes, because some of your mentioned symptoms like tightness in chest, breathing difficulty etc, I will advise you to get an opinion from a pulmonologist to rule out a chest pathology. I am 30 years male suffering from backpain since last 6 months. Working at seating job.

I am 30 years male suffering from backpain since last 6 months. Working at seating job.
Hi Mr. Lybrate-user after reading your complaints of back ache since 6 month duration with your working style of sitting for long hours, it's most likely a mechanical backache. I wanted to know if the pain is radiating to legs with any numbness in legs or any tingling sensation in foot. You have to focus on your ergonomics like changing in to a comfortable chair. Avoiding long hours of sitting. Your desk to chair distance and other ailments. Most importantly you have to start doing back exercises everyday concentrating more on core abdomen exercises and back strengthening exercises. Medicines will reduce the pain only temporarily. So update me with the information I asked and we can set you alright. Get well soon Dr. Sripal.

I am a sports person and also an athlete I have a lot of pain in my knee and shoulder give me some advice.

I am a sports person and also an athlete I have a lot of pain in my knee and shoulder give me some advice.
Hamstring Stretch Lie on your back with your left leg flat on the floor. Loop a towel or rope around your right foot and pull your leg as far as comfortable toward your chest, while keeping a slight bend at the knee. Keep your back pressed to the floor throughout the stretch. Hold for 10 to 30 seconds and then release. Repeat 3 or 4 times with each leg. Do this stretch 5 or 6 times a week. Short-Arc Knee Extensions In the same starting position as the straight-leg raises, put a ball (about the size of a basketball) under your left knee so that your leg is bent. Slowly straighten your leg. Hold, then slowly lower. Repeat with your right leg. Exercises To Avoid A few of the following exercises can be done safely if you have chronic knee problems; they're on this list because they're more likely to be done improperly. The exercises above are safer, while still giving you similar results. •Full-arc knee extensions •Lunges •Deep squats •Hurdler's stretches.

My son is 8 yrs old suffering from thumb lock. Allopathy doctor suggested as conginental disease and advised for surgery (trigger thumb release). Is there an alternate to surgery?

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am dr akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. I think congenital trigger thumb is best release surgically at the age of 8 years, in younger age you have options like splints, passive stretching, but at 8 yrs, it is best managed surgically. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Thanks & regards Dr akshay kumar saxena Consultant orthopaedics fortis hospital, new delhi

Want a Fit Spine: 5 Must Do Exercises

Spinal cord is a very important part of your body as it renders support to your body.  It also gives your body a good posture and thus maintaining a healthy spine is very essential. An unfit spinal cord can lead to various complicated problems.

The following are 5 must do exercises in order to maintain a healthy spine:

  1. Exercising your core muscles can help you to maintain a fit spine. Your core muscles refer to the muscles of your lower back and your abdominal muscles. These muscles give support to your spine. So exercising them can give you a healthy spine.
  2. Walking regularly can also give you a healthy spine. It is suitable for people of all age groups. Daily walking can help you to recover from various spinal illnesses as well such as spinal stenosis.
  3. Swimming is also a good exercise for maintaing a fit spinal cord. Swimming helps to exercise all back muscles and thus, gives you a healthy spinal cord.
  4. Lying down straight with your face down on an even and firm surface for about twenty minutes can help you to get a healthy spine and also a good body posture.
  5. Cycling can also help you achieve a healthy spine. While cycling, all your back muscles and the muscles of the lower part of your body are engaged in physical activity. If the muscles of your lower back are strong, then it can help you to keep your spine fit.

Other than these exercises, stretching your limbs and other stretching exercises are also beneficial for a healthy spine. But it is highly recommended for you to consult a doctor before doing any exercise in order to be guided in the proper manner and avoid further complications.
