You may not know what open pores are. You may know them as ‘uneven skin’, ‘age spots’, ‘holes on the face’. These can also give rise to smile lines or nasolabial folds. As a Skin Specialist, we often come across patients who are looking for cure ofopen pores on their face. There is no suchdermatological term as “open pores” or there is no standard text book that names open pores as a disorder. Open pores give a dull and irregular appearance to the face since the light rays are reflected unequally from uneven surface of skin having open pores. The below blog will enable you to understand how to identify open pores, why are open pores formed, and what can be done to close open pores.

What are these Open Pores?

All of us have pores on the skin. These are oil gland openings; when these openings get abnormally dilated, they are referred to as ‘open pores’. Open pores present as small pit like regions, giving a dimpled look to your skin similar to an orange peel thereby giving a dull, irregular, and aged appearance to the face.

Open pores are mostly seen on the nose and adjacent cheeks (malar area). In individuals with oily skin, they may be observed on outer part of cheeks & forehead, too.

Remember, they are not the same as larger pits and craters of acne scars. It might be a possibility that you have an oily skin with black/white heads and may be susceptible to outbreaks of pimples.

How are they formed?

Open pores generally commence at the time of puberty; as a result of increased oil secretion from sebaceous/oil glands, which occurs as a result of stimulation of androgen hormone. As an end result these sebaceous glands openings get blocked with dead skin cells & debris. This restricts the flow of increased oil resulting in distension of their opening which is seen as open pores.

Age spots may be caused by skin aging, sun exposure, or other forms of ultraviolet light exposure, such as tanning beds. You are most likely to develop age spots on the areas of your skin that receive the most sun exposure.

How to get rid of the open pores?

There are various treatment options available so as to get rid of open pores. However, there is no concrete evidence to prove the efficacy and response rate.

Before starting treatment for you it is important to find out the cause and make a diagnosis of your condition. Which is possible only after examination of the patient. Darkness of neck can be acanthosis nigricans, lpp, ashy dermatosis, dermatitis neglecta and so on. Some of these conditions also requires investigations.

Soap cannot de tan your skin. Nivea is a good soap but use little soap everyday as it dries up your skin while you need moisturisation. De-tan your skin with yogurt or lemon. They are very effective. In future, never go in sun without applying sufficient amount of sun screen. Sun rays can be very dangerous, please remember that.

Grandma's tips to common skin problems

Grandma's tips to common skin problems
Natural home-made beauty tips passed on from generations can never go wrong with any skin type. We give you the best tips to fight some very common skin and hair issues.

To get rid of acne
Acne is an everyday problem, especially if you are blessed with oily skin. In order to get rid of them, you could try these face packs.
Turmeric or haldi is known to have many medicinal properties. Being a natural cosmetic, it is also used to beautify skin.
Take turmeric powder (haldi) and add a few drops of water and lemon juice to it.
Apply it on the acne and leave it for 15 minutes before washing it off with cold water.
Fuller’s earth (multani mitti) is another great ingredient to get rid of pimples, dirt and oil from the face.
Mix some rose water in multani mitti and apply it evenly on the face.
Allow it to dry and then wash it off and pat-dry your face.

For glowing skin
For years, mothers and grannies have used besan or gram flour to treat minor skin problems
Besan – good for all skin types, along with other ingredients, adds that perfect glow to your face, here’s how.
Make a pack of gram flour (besan) with turmeric, lemon drops and some milk cream (malai).
Apply this over your face and keep it on for 15-20 minutes
Wash off with tap water and pat dry.
It’s a known fact that orange peels do more good than the orange itself. Another way to add radiance to your skin is by using orange peels with ground pink dal (masoor ki daal)
Add a little honey or curd to orange peels and dal and grind well to make a paste.
Apply this paste on your face and keep it for 20 minutes.
Wash off with tap water and pat dry.

For soft hands and feet
If rough hands and cracked heels bother you, then use bee wax to soothe them. Another good way to soften them is to apply petroleum jelly before you go to sleep and wear socks. Making sugar scrubs also help. Apply on knees, elbows, cuticles, etc. to make them soft.

This extra skin on the edges or below the eyes which looks yellow in color is called Xanthylasma and this is due to excess fat deposit and not surely due to excess cholesterol, even if the cholesterol levels are normal then there may be deposits hence try to avoid much of oils and fatty foods and also this needs treatment. There are good homeo medicines to treat them and if you need any please write back to me.

I am suffering with eye dark circle from 3 to 4 year please help with this how to get cure?

MD - Homeopathy, BHMS

I am suffering with eye dark circle from 3 to 4 year please help with this how to get cure?
Dear Mr. lybrate-user In reference to your inquiry, please note that you need not worry, as treatment for this problem of Under Eye Circle is available with us. The causative factors may not be necessarily based into the affected region and may be associated with disorders of internal organs. It is, the nature of the problem that calls in for the strategy of the treatment which may include internal remedies supported by external modalities like:- localized immune enhancer activities to affected region i.e. Acupuncture, applications of products with certified organic herbs, modernized cosmetology and procedures based on ancient principles as mentioned in classical text including constitutional diet & yoga. On examination by the concerned Doctor and on case taking these details are given to you as a routine procedure. The skin surrounding the eye is very thin and delicate. Utmost gentle eye care ensure clear glistening eyes and clear sparkling eyes indicate a healthy disposition. In most areas of the body the epidermis is 35 to 50 micrometers thick. Micrometer is one millionth of a meter. On palms and soles the epidermis is usually much thicker, whereas around the eyes it is only about 20 micrometers thick. So, one can imagine how delicate and sensitive is the skin around the eyes. The epidermis around the eyes is not only very thin but it also contains many blood vessels. Circles or dark shadow under the eyes are possible due to slow blood flow. The tensions that are trapped in the eye socket can result in poor eyesight, pain, fatigue, swelling, puffiness and sunken- sallow look. The eyes and the area around them loose their luster gets wrinkled and appears dark. The possible causes for such condition may be .Heredity. .Lack of sleep. ,Poor nutrition (lack of Vit. A, B, C, E)Lack of eye exercise. De-oxygenated blood flow. .Dry skin covered by squamous residue of stale eye make-up and other pollutants.
