I have a daughter who is 8.5 years old. Actually her problem is that she does not want to eat and she is underweight. Whatever she eats she eats with water. What should I do sir?

M.D PEADIATRICS, MBBS
Pediatrician, Pune
Hello lybrate-user, you have not mentioned your daughter's weight, which should b between 26-28kg. What I will advice is do not force her to eat, let her demand food, & serve only heathy food items avoiding junk food like bakery products, all kinds of wafers, chocolets etc. Pl make sure that she has salad & fresh fruits daily. Treat constipation if that is the case, deworm her every 6 months. If she is falling sick often she needs to b seen &investigated by Dr. I hope this solves your problem. All the best!

Casual medicines for such young baby is not advisable. Consult pediatrician for appropriate medicine. U can instill saline nasal drop in each nostrils if nostrils are blocked.

Straining while passing urine is common in infants. In case you notice any other symptoms like abdominal pain, pus or blood stained urine, fever on and off, then get a complete urine analysis done to rule out urinary infections. Also give her plenty of water so that she urinates frequently.

Vomiting in Children Post Meals - 4 Common Reasons Why!

Vomiting in Children Post Meals - 4 Common Reasons Why!

Children might vomit after meals due to various causes. While they may not be life threatening or potentially harmful to the child, getting to the bottom of the problem to deal with it is better, so as to prevent it from becoming a chronic problem is definitely vital.

Listed below are some of the most common reasons children might throw up:

  1. Gastroenteritis: This may be virus, bacteria and parasite induced. The best way to deal with it is to eat clean food and wash hands with an antiseptic soap prior to each meal. It is usually seen in combination with diarrhoea.
  2. Allergies: Some children who throw up might do so as it is allergy induced. To diagnose the cause of food induced vomiting, the allergens must be noticed as soon as possible as there might be more than one food ingredient causing the reaction in the child. Each time the child throws up, the parents must note down all the food ingredients consumed by the child. This helps the paediatrician in better diagnosing the underlying cause of vomiting. In children up to the age of 4, foods such as rice, poultry, milk and soy often act as triggers and it is called ‘food protein induced enterocolitis syndrome’ (FPIES).
  3. Backing up of food: Anti peristalsis or the backward movement of food along the digestive tract might happen in children for a host of reasons. The digestive tract has muscles which prevent the backward flow of food and instead, force the food downwards i.e. from mouth to anus. Due to children having weaker musculature in their digestive tract, regurgitation might be a frequent occurrence.
  4. Reflux: Swallowing large amounts of air while eating can make the child bloated leading to reflux. Reflux can also take place if the baby is being overfed.

If the child is frequently throwing up after meals, keeping them hydrated is of utmost importance. Unless a doctor prescribes them anti-vomiting medicines, they shouldn’t be administered to children. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pediatrician.

Brushing Tip For Kids

The tiny tots must use a toothbrush with a small rounded brush head and soft bristles. It helps in cleaning their milk teeth thoroughly.

My 3 year old son shows very strong resistance to take antibiotics (because of the bitter taste) and refuses to take them. When we try to forcibly give him, he spits it out. At times it happens that he gulps the medicine but immediately vomits. Please suggest solution ?

Pediatrician, Pune
He is right, antibiotics may not be always required for each and every illness, they have their own problems, and are very bad to taste, please try one which you are giving to your child. Avoid unjust use and abuse of antibiotics, they are the only weapons with us to fight the deadly organisms, frequent use makes their susceptibility less, and they dont work when definately needed.

My newborn son is 12 days old and he rarely burps after breast feeding and spills milk sometimes. I am really worried if its fine. He also has jaundice (8.9 when last checked on 8th day) and doc has said it will go on its own on 20th day. Shall I be avoiding certain foods or my daily massage that my midwife gives? Doc has also suggested not to apply nothing on his skin but he is having little pimples on his face.

Dear mother, I think you are the first time motherand a very observant and caring too. But as per your concerns as fa ras jaundice is concerened it will slowly go away but you didnot specify the weight and wetherher the baby was born ontime or before time. Spilling milk sometimes is fine, hope the child is not being fed too frequently. Clean the face of your baby regularly with water and dab it dry. No need to avoid your routine food. Hope this satisfies your query. Any further question you are welcome.
