My father, aged 74 years, is suffering from enlarged prostate problem, i. E, specially at night urine realesed slowly from prostate. We recently done his psa test, which is now 186. 3. My question is can my father be cuered from this problem and is there any chance of prostate cancer.

MBBS, DGO (cal)
General Physician,
Answer to your first question - yes he can be fully cured. For that you shall have to consult urosurgeon. Now the second, yes he might have cancer prostate - its a possibility, like every male after middle age may have it. You need your father examined by urosurgeon to exclude that.

Am a blood cancer patient. Can I have sex with my wife without barriers. Will she get affected? Is she become pregnant. Will the baby too get affected?

Oncologist, Faridabad
You must be receiving chemotherapy, in that case she shouldn't conceive for a while as some chemotherapy agents may cause foetal deformity and malformations. You can choose alternative contraceptive in case you don't want to use barrier methods.

Does anyone know where Graviola tree is grown in india, its fruit has medicinal properties that can cure cancer. It is also called Sour sop.

MD - Radiation Oncology, MBBS, DNB (Radiotherapy)
Oncologist, Howrah
Overall, there is no evidence to show that graviola works as a cure for cancer. In laboratory studies, graviola extracts can kill some types of liver and breast cancer cells that are resistant to particular chemotherapy drugs. But there haven?t been any studies in humans. So we don't know whether it can work as a cancer treatment or not. Many sites on the internet advertise and promote graviola capsules as a cancer cure but none of them are supported by any reputable scientific cancer organisations.

Ayurvedic Remedies To Treat Lymphoma!

Ayurvedic Remedies To Treat Lymphoma!

In simple words, lymphoma is cancer of the lymphatic system. It begins in the infection-fighting cells of the body called the lymphocytes. Lymphocytes can be found in lymph nodes, spleen, thymus gland in the neck, bone marrow and other parts of our bodies.

Lymphoma means that the lymphocytes change and divide recklessly. There are two main types of lymphoma-

  1. Non-Hodgkin: The most common type of lymphoma.
  2. Hodgkin

Non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphoma each affect a different kind of lymphocyte or white blood cell.

There is a different treatment modality for both these different types of lymphomas as the affected cells are different and so is their rate of growth. Even though lymphatic cancer is very common, it’s easily treatable. Timely diagnosis and proper treatment off course are very important. Its causes can be diverse like genetics, a weak immune system, diseases like celiac, lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, infections with certain viruses, age over 60 and gender- men are more prone to getting lymphomas.

Symptoms and warning signs

  1. Swollen glands in the neck, armpit, or groin
  2. Persistent cough
  3. Night sweats
  4. Weight loss
  5. Shortness of breath
  6. Fever
  7. Stomach pain
  8. Fatigue
  9. Itching

The treatment depends on the kind of lymphoma one has and how far the cancer has spread. The treatments for non-Hodgkin lymphoma are-

  1. Chemotherapy which uses certain drugs to destroy cancer cells.
  2. Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells.
  3. Immunotherapy uses the body's own immune system to kill cancer cells.

The common treatments for Hodgkin lymphoma are:

  1. Chemotherapy
  2. Radiation therapy

Traditional medicine systems like Acupressure and Ayurveda are used as complementary systems to bring relief from the cancer.

  1. Cupressure is used to drain the lymph nodes affected with lymphoma.
  2. Triphala, a common Ayurvedic remedy is being investigated to understand its killing effects on lymphoma cells in the body. It has also been seen to ‘regress’ tumours in animal studies. Hence, Triphala is a potent anti-cancer Ayurvedic drug.

Ayurvedic herbal drugs are used to treat the lymphatic system of the patient, so that it produces normal cells. Ayurvedic Panch tikta grut can pacify the lymphatic system whereas other herbs enhance the immune system and reduce inflammation.

Quick Tips

  1. Green tea has also been shown to have phytonutrients called catechins, which have anticancer properties.
  2. Curcumin extracted from turmeric is also able to kill human lymphoma cells. It also makes chemotherapy and radiotherapy work better against the cancer while protecting normal cells.
  3. Mistletoe extract is also a powerful immune-modulator.
  4. Carrots and broccoli also show a number of benefits when included in the diet of someone suffering from cancer.
  5. Foods rich in beta carotene which means vegetables and fruits of different colours have high antioxidant content which supports healing.
  6. Chyawan prash is very useful during chemotherapy. One must avoid Sugar.

What are symptoms of breast cancer? I have a tumor in my breast, what I have to do?

Post Doctoral Research (Ph.D.) (A.M) (Oncology), Integrative Oncology for Physicians (MSKCC, N.Y, USA), Doctor of Natural Medicine (N.D/ N.M.D), Ayurveda (I) Cert., Advanced Strategic Management (APSM), B.E (Computer Sc. & Engg.), Clinically Relevant Herb-Drug Interactions (CME) - (Cine-Med Inc. Alternative Medicine Specialist, Bhubaneswar
Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Symptoms manifest majorly in the following ways - a. Lump/ nodule in the breast that gets attached to the skin of the breast over time. B. Enlarged lymph nodes in the axilla which are palpable. C. Rarely, red, swollen and tender breast. In your case, however, it may be a benign tumor. Nevertheless, to be on a safer side, I would advise you to get this clinically examined by a gynaec oncologist right away and not delay any further. Imaging, either through mammography or mri subsequently followed by a biopsy is always the gold standard for accurate diagnosis of breast cancer. I wish you all the very best. Take care.

Is this type of cancer caused by genetic factors? Are other members of my family at risk?

Oncologist, Faridabad
Nearly 5-7 % cancers may be genetic. Genetic cancers can be due to some change in genetic make up by any means or mutations or may be transmitted from one generation to other. Only cancers which can hereditary like breast ovarian cancer, or men syndrome related cancers etc may be part hereditary cancers and other members also may suffer, not all.

I am suffering from hodgkin lymphoma and going through chemotherapy. Please give me some guidelines.

MD - Radiothrapy, MBBS
Oncologist, Pune
Generally the treatment of Hodgkin's Lymphoma is Chemotherapy for 4 to 6 cycles followed by Radiation if indicated. Chemotherapy is generally given once in every 2 weeks as day 1 and day 15 which forms 1 cycle. You will need to do PET CT in between to reassess the response to treatment. Please consult online for more information. Thanks.
