Here are some tips to manage cataracts

Tips to manage Cataracts

Hi! I’m Dr. Rajeev. I’m a Senior Consultant in Glaucoma Cataract and Defect Surgery.
Today, I’m going to inform you about Cataracts. Cataract is a condition wherein, there is a opacity in the normal crystalline lens.
The normal lens of the eye is transparent. Any opacity in the eye is called as cataract. Cataract is a word derived from an Egyptian word which means water fall. The fogginess of the waterfall is what a cataract means.
The most common cataract that we come across is called as senile cataract. It is easily treated. The cause of easily treated cataract is multifactorial. There is no single cause attributed to the cataract.
All cataracts may not be operated. Any cataract that affects the normal visual functioning is to be operated. There is no medical treatment for the cataracts.

Cataracts can easily be treated with surgery which is called as phacoemulsification or which involves giving a small incision in the cornea, in cornea and in which we cut and suck the cataract with the help of a pro and implant a lens in the space. It can be done under topical anesthesia or without injections and the patient starts seeing within the days’ time.
Post operatively, some medications are prescribed some medications are given which need to be taken for two to four weeks. Glasses can be prescribed after four weeks and you can resume your normal functioning within a day’s time. There are special lenses; there are wide range of lenses available for cataract surgery. This can be spherical, toric and multi-purpose lenses.

You can discuss it with your doctors depending on your need, he’ll prescribe what you want and if you want any further information about cataract, you can talk to me on Lybrate or you can search me online through Lybrate.

I feel very much itching in eyes in the evening since last 4 months what should I do.

I feel very much itching in eyes in the evening since last 4 months what should I do.
Hello lybrate-user. Sorry about your eye trouble. From the symptoms described by you, it is most likely to be due to allergy of the eyes. You could use a lubricant eye drop 5 to 6 times in a day for both eyes. Also, use an antihistamine eye drop 2 to 3 times in a day for both eyes. Maintain a gap of 15 minutes between both eyes. You should KNOW YOUR EYE ALLERGY first. •There are various EYE ALLERGIES TRIGGERS: A person can be allergic to: Pollen from grasses, weeds, and trees. These are the most common kinds of eye allergies and are called SEASONAL ALLERGIC CONJUNCTIVITIS. •Dust, pet dander, and other indoor allergens. These eye allergies last year-round and are called CHRONIC (PERENNIAL) CONJUNCTIVITIS. •Makeup, perfume, or other chemicals can trigger eye allergies called CONTACT CONJUNCTIVITIS. •An allergy to contact lenses, called GIANT PAPILLARY CONJUNCTIVITIS, makes eyes sensitive and red. Just like any other allergic reaction, they are caused by a MISFIRING OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM, the body's natural defense mechanism. It releases HISTAMINE, a chemical that causes swelling and inflammation. Symptoms to Watch For •Red, irritated eyes •Itchiness •Tearing or runny eyes •Swollen eyelids •Soreness, burning, or pain •Sensitivity to light Usually you’ll also have other allergy symptoms, such as a stuffy, runny nose and sneezing. DON'T TAKE YOUR EYES FOR GRANTED! Protect your sight with these six tips: 1. Eat for Good Vision 2. Quit Smoking 3. Wear Sunglasses / helmets to shield your eyes from dust, sunlight, pollution 4. Wash your eyes 3-4 times a day 5. Look Away From the Computer Screen at regular intervals 6. Avoid rubbing your eyes with fingers/ cloth/ shirt/ dupatta, etc. Everyone, even young children, should get their eyes examined regularly. It helps you protect your sight and see your best. Eye exams can also find some eye diseases, such as glaucoma, that have no symptoms. It's important to find these diseases early on, when they're easier to treat. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

One of the causes of twitching is stress, eyestrain. But yes if it persists even beyond some more days then you will need further evaluation because one of the causes is neurological. There are temporary solutions to it.

Vision loss in diebetes is due to diabetic retinopathy. If vision is completely lost then it very difficult to restore vision. But if diabetic retinopathy is of nonproliferative type or there is cystoid macular edema then only remained vision can be preserved by laser treatment and/ or intravitreal antivgef drug. And in every situation diabetes should be controlled state.

Sir/mam my grandpa is suffering from neovascular glaucoma with cornea edema secondary to old CRVO .He is not able to see anything from his left eye since last 2 months his pressure is 44mmHg(icare) different doctor have given different suggestions 1st)) doc lotim B,dorzox, soline,Tab diamox, refresh liquigel, travatan and after getting treatment for 1and 1/2 month they suggested inject avastin to reduce the pressure and operate after all these they r not sure whether he will be able to see again. 2nd)doctor suggested that avastin wont work and he wont be able to see anything as he needs to be operated for reducing the pressure as these tablets cannot be used for long time after getting operated his pain and pressure will reduce but still he wont be able to see anything. And after that laser 3rd)doctor suggested that inj mannitol 100ml Iv*3 daily one and avastin but still he is not sure 4th) doc suggested that he wont be able to handle this and suggested for retina specialist he might be able to solve the issue .please help

It seems that your grandpa is suffering from a painful blind eye due to end stage neovascular glaucoma. At this stage, the treatment options are only to make the patient comfortable and prevent pain . Visual recovery is very very unlikely. He can try diode CPC as an option to reduce pressure. In case even that does not work, the removal of that eye might be the only possible solution

As far as your eyes are concerned, make sure she takes good healthy diet inclusive of green leafy vegetables and fruits. Patient needs to undergo regular eye checkup as some asthma drugs contain steroids and steroid can have some harmful effect on eyes if not used under observation. So observation is must and for that frequent visits to asthma doctor and eye doctor is must.

Hello. Rp is a genetic disorder. It is a progressive disease. Progression cannot be stopped. Slowly the central vision may also get affected. Only what you can do is regular follow up and low vision aids that he is already using! continue the treatment. Just get your kids also checked. Since disease is genetic.
