Hi, My self Manoj, Height 161 cms, Weight 75 Kgs. I am suffered with gynecomastia (male boobs) problem. I got my operation from AIIMS last year, but it again developed. Can you please suggest which tests I have to do and will this affect any other thing as some docs say it affect my sex life also.

Doctor of Naturopathy & Natural Medicines, DM - Clinical Haematology
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Agra
Lybrate-user try these natural remedy: 1. Turmeric turmeric is a well-known home remedy for gynecomastia. This spice can increase the testosterone hormone levels in males. When the level of testosterone becomes high, large breasts in men naturally reduce in size. Plus, turmeric promotes liver health and helps burn fat. Add 1 or 2 teaspoons of turmeric to a cup of water and heat it for 10 minutes. Drink it 2 or 3 times a day and especially before going to bed. Repeat daily and within a few weeks you will notice the changes. 2. Flaxseeds also contain omega-3 fatty acids that help raise testosterone and reduce estrogen levels. Plus, they contain higher concentrations of lignans that balance estrogen activity and have antiestrogenic qualities. Flaxseeds also aid in the removal of harmful toxins from the body. Add 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed to a glass of hot water and consume it daily until you see improvement. Another option is to take 1 or 2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily for a few weeks. You can also add ground flaxseed to smoothies and baked goods such as breads and muffins. 3. Exercise can help reduce gynecomastia as it helps balance hormone levels. Plus, certain exercises help build chest and torso muscles. They also help reduce overall body fat, which could be contributing to pseudogynecomastia. Pseudogynecomastia causes feminization of the male breast due to a buildup of fat. Include cardiovascular, weight lifting and elliptical exercises in your exercise routine. Swimming, especially the breast stroke, is effective for reducing excess fat. Jogging and walking are good forms of exercise that also help burn a lot of calories and body fat.

Helo, i'd like to ask to you about something that really has been stressing me out and having nightmares about it. Recently I went to a trip to Baku, I had sex with an escort unfortunately but she had A HEALTh CARD so at first I was using a condom but last 5 minutes I took it off, She seemed really clean but am just really worried if I caught HIV, There were no symptoms showing too, I ran over HIV TOPICS recently and thoughts started to storm in my brain, It really causing me to stress and can't stop thinking.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Cleanliness does not prove a person does not have HIV. You should have never taken off the condoms. The escorts are periodically tested for HIV, but during the window period they can have the virus, but may show negative results. Some escorts who are HIV +, deliberately can carry a duplicate card to fool unsuspecting customers. When was the exposure? Check for HIV antibodies 3 months after the last encounter, if negative do not worry. If you want to test early there are tests which can show the HIV antigens around 2 weeks from exposure. All the best, in future always use condoms.

Hi, please go for a detailed blood investigation like cbc, widal test, mp and routine urine examination and then revert back with the reports. Till then keep recording your temparature. If it is too high, do tepid sponging. Wear loose cotton garments. Drink plenty of fluids. Consume light and easily digestable food. Continue to take tab. Paracetamol 1-1-1 till the fever subsides. Drink only boiled and cooled water.

Hi to know for sure that whether she is pregnant or not- kindly get urine pregnancy test done. Both the times sex was done in "safe" period and I pill was taken so chances of pregnancy are minimal. However ipill is not recommended for regular use. It is only for emergency. It can have serious side effects. For regular use. Condom is recommended.

Diabetes and Cancer: The New Epidemic?

MBBS, DNB (General Medicine)
Endocrinologist, Delhi
Diabetes and Cancer: The New Epidemic?

There was an era where we had deadly infections like plague and polio causing death of thousands of people. We still have occasional outbreak of swine flu, but by and large, infections are quite controlled. The new killer diseases are caused because of the lifestyle we have adapted and the damage we have done to the environment. High intake of processed foods, artificial chemicals in our foods, sedentary lifestyle with very minimal to no physical activity, couching over the computers; the list is quite long.

All these have led to diseases like diabetes and cancer that were not so common about say few decades ago:

Detailed observation has revealed that both these new epidemiologic diseases have a close correlation. There are factors, which induce diabetes and diabetes in turn and in some cases, diabetes inducing agents, can cause cancer also. It has also been observed that mortality is severely increased if diabetic patients are diagnosed with cancer. There are two types of diabetes. While type 1 is mostly hereditary, type 2 is lifestyle induced and the age at which this is being diagnosed is taking a severe plunge. Adolescents and teenagers are being diagnosed for diabetes. Cancer, on the other hand, is of various types (leukaemia, melanoma, myeloma, etc.) and can affect various organs (lung, breast, prostate, stomach, liver, etc.).

The medical community is yet to decipher the disease pattern of both these conditions. While there is no definite correlation between diabetes and all types of cancer, some types of cancer are definitely correlated with a definite reason identified, pancreatic and liver cancer for instance. The high amounts of insulin that diabetic patients are exposed to causes changes in liver and pancreas including fatty liver and cirrhosis, here the incidence of cancer is higher. The linkage is not very clear in lung and intestinal cancers and also there is no link between prostate cancer and diabetes.

Diabetes is considered as a state of chronic inflammation and leads to conditions like hyperinsulinemia (higher levels of insulin in the blood) hyperglycemia (higher levels of sugar in the blood). These are believed to aggravate the neoplastic process of cancer formation, thereby inducing cancer at a greater pace and also increasing the mortality rates.

The following are risk factors that are applicable to both age, physical activity, diet, obesity, drinking and smoking. It is also possible that onset of one can be followed by the other. As noted earlier, more detailed research is awaited to establish a definite linkage, but the correlation cannot be ignored at all.

Both these new epidemics are here to stay and since they have a common set of factors, we need to work on ways to contain them.

Pollen Allergy - 4 Tips To Keep Yourself Safe!

MBBS
General Physician, Ahmednagar
Pollen Allergy - 4 Tips To Keep Yourself Safe!

While some people look forward to spring and the beautiful flowers that bloom, for others this is a time of extreme discomfort triggered by pollen allergies. Pollen is probably one of the most difficult allergies to fight as it is invisible and is literally present everywhere. Sneezing, coughing, a runny nose, congestion and watery eyes are the most common symptoms of a pollen allergy. However, you can minimise your troubles by following a few simple steps.

  1. Keep an eye on the pollen count: Not every day has the same amount of pollen in the air. Pollen density is also affected by the time of the day. Pollen count refers to the amount of pollen present in the air during a specific time period. You can find out the pollen count of your area online or through a number of apps. Once you know the pollen count. You can plan your day accordingly and step out or stay in.
  2. Plan your time spent outdoors wisely: It isn’t always possible to stay indoors even if you know the pollen count is high. However, you can still plan your time so as to not be outdoors at peak pollen times. 5am to 9am are the worst times to step out as this is when most plants pollinate. Hence avoid stepping out during this time. Windy days can also worsen the situation by spreading pollen around. If you must go for a jog early morning, avoid thoroughfares and gardens and instead pick a route around residential streets.
  3. Protect yourself: Face masks may not look very good but can help reduce the amount of pollen being inhaled. If you find yourself sneezing a lot during pollen season, consider investing in a painter’s mask that can filter the air being inhaled and exhaled. If you are stepping out to do yard work or know that you’re going to spend a lot of time in heavy traffic areas, take your antiallergenic medication before you step out instead of waiting for an allergic reaction to begin.
  4. Have plenty of showers: Try making it a habit to have a shower and changing your clothes as soon as you come home. This prevents the outdoor pollen from circulating in your home. Follow this routine even if you’ve simply been gardening outdoors. While showering, do not forget your hair. If you do not want to shampoo it every day, simply rinse it out to get rid of all the pollen. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a general physician.

Dear doctor, I am 74 years old man, while passing urine I feel it's burning. This problem has been there for the last 15 days. Is it due to prostate gland problem. Awaiting your response. Thanks.

Felllow in Endourology, MCh Urology, MRCS, MS, MBBS
Urologist,
Dear , I am sorry to know about your problem. Enlarged prostate usually does not cause burning, but it can lead to urinary infection, bladder stone or rarely cancer, all of which can cause burning. Please get an ultrasonogram of abdomen with post void residual urine estimation to rule out prostatic enlargement and urine microscopy to rule out infection. Please get back to me with the reports and I can guide you better. It is also important to get your prostate examined by a urologist. Wish you a speedy recovery.
