Reasons Behind Blocked Nose And Remedies For It!

Reasons Behind Blocked Nose And Remedies For It!

A blocked nose is not only annoying, but extremely discomforting. Some common reasons include:

  1. Common cold
  2. Allergy
  3. Sinusitis
  4. Polyps
  5. Foreign body in nose

Therefore, the remedial measures for blocked nose vary, depending on the cause that led to it. Before going to home remedies please consult Dr.and keep in regular observation. Some of the ways by which you can redress this problem are:

  1. Use a humidifier: Sinusitis is often held responsible for a clogged nose, a condition that is almost always accompanied by severe pain. Placing a humidifier in room proves to be extremely beneficial. This machine by converting the water to moisture fills up the room and significantly increases the humidity of the room. Therefore, when you breathe, the humid air soothes the inflamed blood vessels in the nose and helps you to breathe properly. this doesn't mean you neglect the problem. We have endoscopic treatment and surgery now which is simple and quick healing and resume work .
  2. Take a hot shower: When you find it difficult to breathe, a quick hot shower can go a long way in curing the discomfort. The logic that operates is the steam generated from the hot shower thins the mucus and also considerably reduces the inflammation in the nose, allowing you to breathe normally.
  3. Drink lots of water: Though the suggestion may seem incredible, drinking water actually helps in unblocking the blocked nose. When you drink a lot of water, the mucus in the nostrils is thinned, at the same time it pushes back the accumulated fluids, thereby curbing the condition of blocked nose.
  4. Using a saline spray: This is one of the most ancient and trusted ways of treating blocked nose. By administering a saline or a nasal spray, the moisture in your nostrils increases and radically diminishes the inflammation.
  5. Use warm compresses: The compress(towel) that was dipped in hot water, when placed on the nose and forehead helps to unblock the nasal passages. The soothing effect of the warm compresses reduces the inflammation and facilitates the process of breathing.
  6. Exercise: Doing aerobics definitely help by releasing adrenaline in body and opens nose. This is the best treatment of allergic rhinitis after avoiding allergens.

Do not use Otrivin like nose drops I inadvertently. This can even produce blocked nose if using for long time.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Dear lybrate user, I think, along with medicines, you will need to go for therapy/counselling. Counselling will help you to control your panic attacks. About the social anxiety, you need systematic behaviour therapy. You can get rid of your anxiety and panic attacks with the help of therapy. Please contact a counsellor for this. But do not stop medication on your own. Your counsellor and your psychiatrrist will advice you do that, when you will start feeling better. Take care.

I'm a heavy drinker since 3-4 and I want to take a firm decision to quit it permanently. I don't have family members or friends to help me with it. I myself want to be strong enough to quit it, and don't want to get urged for drinking and do many things in life. Its only that I have had faced few circumstances in life which lead me to this habit, and I couldn't control my mind from having alcohol. I have taken a first step by this decision to quit, and need advice for further details.

MBBS, MD (AIIMS, Gold Medalist), Diploma in CBT (UWS, Glasgow)
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Remove all reminders of alcohol from home such as empty bottles, ashtray etc. Try to avoid the place from where you used to purchase alcohol. Take a different route. Have a readymade answer if someone offers a drink. Do not fall into the trap of thinking I shall drink only 1 peg and no more. Do not try to challenge yourself or test your will power by being at a place where alcohol is being served and you try to resist. Confidence is good, over confidence is not. Do not hesitate to take medicines and therapy if you are unable to quit on your own. Let your friends know that you have quit. Announce it to others so that you now have a greater responsibility. If you do drink by mistake on a particular day, do not think all is lost and go back to old ways. Its okay and start afresh the next day. A lapse and relapse are not the same.

My mother's sugar level is 186 after 1. 5-2 hrs of breakfast. She is not taking any medicine but just doing jogging and home chores to maintain sugar level. Kindly tell whether she should start taking medicine (bcoz we are doubtful that if sugar medicine is once started she ll get addicted to it) or do any home remedies like a exercise or jogging or kindly tell her any exercise.

I do not know why patients believe that you get addicted to sugar medicines. The sugar medicines are absolutely essential to keep you healthy and prevent long term complications. Let me ask you this - if someone is hungry and eats food, is that an addiction?
