Cholesterol level should be measured at least once every five years in everyone over age 20. The screening test that is usually performed is a blood test called a lipid profile. Experts recommend that men ages 35 and older and women ages 45 and older be more frequently screened for lipid disorders. The lipoprotein profile includes: Total cholesetrol LDL (low-density lipoprotein CHOLESETROL also called "bad"CHOLESTETROL HDL (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, also called "good" cholesterol) TRIGLYCERIDES (fats carried in the BLOOD from the food we eat. Excess calories, alcohol, or sugar in the body are converted into TRIGLYCERIDES and stored in fat cells throughout the body. High triglycerides and cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Change life style .do meditation, yoga, Go walk daily, do any one physically activity daily i.e.play any game., Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, take plenty of water in day time. How to get rid of acidity no matter what I eat? I am tried a large number of antacids, but I am not getting any result.

MBBS, DNB (General Medicine)

How to get rid of acidity no matter what I eat? I am tried a large number of antacids, but I am not getting any result.
Problem of acidity is a tendency in which your stomach starts to produce more acid than required for the digestions of your food. In such a case when there is irregularity in the timings of the meal or there is intake of spicy and oily food items then there is production of even more acid. In such a situation only by the help of medicines it is difficult to achieve relief. A balance should also be made between type of diet, Regular timings of diet and good healthy lifestyle with emphasis on proper sleep. For diet - Fruits are especially recommended because they have an excellent role in prevention of acidity.

Dear lybrate-user you have not mentioned why did you get ultrasound done. Anyway 5 mm stone in kidney if asymptomatic, nothing to worry but have one consultation with urologist. Ovarian cyst of this size if not causing any problem take ocs for three months and repeat ultrasound. If cyst disappears nothing to worry. If remains of same size and asymptomatic nothing to be done. If cyst grows and reaches 6 cm and belonged, surgery is only option.

Homeopathic Remedies For Ulcerative Colitis!

BHMS
Homeopath, Mumbai
Homeopathic Remedies For Ulcerative Colitis!

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammation of ulcers or open sores, in the innermost layer of the large intestine. It is a form of inflammatory bowel disease. Even though there is no absolute cause of ulcerative colitis, there are some possible factors such as genetics, infections and stress. It mostly seems to be hereditary in the sense that of the 10-30% people that have ulcerative colitis, most of them have one close family member with the same condition.

The main symptoms of ulcerative colitis are the following:

  1. Diarrhoea with blood and mucus
  2. Abdominal pain can range from mild discomfort to painful cramping
  3. Anaemia
  4. Fatigue
  5. Weight loss

Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis: Even though conventional treatment such as corticosteroids and aminosalicylates are used to reduce inflammation, homeopathic treatment can help stop the bleeding and diarrhoea. A long-term remission is possible, and future attacks can be prevented by homeopathy.

Stress and Ulcerative Colitis

When someone is under stress, the body gears up for a fight-or-flight response by secreting certain hormones, including adrenalin, as well as molecules called cytokines. They stimulate the immune system, which triggers inflammation. In people whose ulcerative colitis is in remission, this sets the stage for the return of their symptoms, known as a flare-up.

Ulcerative colitis itself can increase your stress as well. Worrying about symptoms, having an accident, and managing a chronic condition in general — taking medication, eating right, avoiding triggers — can increase stress. Along with the physical symptoms of the disease, managing stress is a priority for people with ulcerative colitis,

Reduce Stress, Reduce Ulcerative Colitis

There are many ways to ease such stress. Here are some of the ways that can help you reduce stress-

  1. Deep breathing. Breathing from the diaphragm floods the body with beneficial oxygen, which slows your heart rate and can lower blood pressure. Deep breathing can help you both in your daily life and when you feel stressed, Horst says.
  2. Yoga and stretching. Yoga provides a double benefit for people with ulcerative colitis: It's a physical exercise that stretches and strengthens muscles, and it's a meditative exercise that can help you to relax and release stress.
  3. Don’t overdo it. Limit stress by not overwhelming yourself with tasks and responsibilities. It's easy to want to take on a lot, especially when you're feeling good, but wearing yourself down can cause a flare.
  4. Rest. Getting the proper amount of rest and quality sleep can help to both reduce ulcerative colitis symptoms and boost your overall health.

Please take Nux vom 30 - twice daily for next 2 weeks and revert back. Also do not drink excess of water - drink water according to your thirst only. If you have the habit of masturbation - leave it - if not then get your urine tested for r/e & culture. If these do not reveal any abnormality then you need to do a USG of lower abdomen to rule out any prostate enlargement. Based on the reports treatment would be guided.

10 lifestyle changes to overcome acid reflux or gastro problem

DNB
Gastroenterologist, Mumbai
10 lifestyle changes to overcome acid reflux or gastro problem
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is basically a lifestyle malfunction and can definitely be prevented. You might have acid reflux problem if you get heartburn at the night and wake up the next morning with chronic cough, bitterness in the mouth, sore throat and fatigue. This usually happens because of what we eat and drink. So prevention and cure also depend on what goes inside us.

10 things to keep in mind when you have acid reflux problem:

1. Limit your intake of acidic foods: This would include tomatoes, vinegar, oranges, grapefruit, etc.
2. Say no to spicy food: Lower the amount of your consumption of spicy foods. These tend to give heartburns.
3. Don’t head to bed post meal: After you have had your meal, avoid lying down. Digestion is quicker and better when you are sitting upright
4. Avoid greasy food: Non-fatty food and lean meat are good to go.
5. Have lesser sour foods: Cut down your excessive consumption of mustard, mint, citrus, vinegar, chocolates, pepper, and tomatoes.
6. Avoid carbonated drinks and alcohol: They tend to trigger reflux.
7. Avoid smoking.
8. Avoid tight clothing: Don't wear snug or tight clothes, go to bed wearing comfortable clothes.
9. Stick to gluten-free diet: A protein that is found in barley, rye, wheat etc might also trigger the symptoms of GERD.
10. Get professional help: Consult a doctor and then take action accordingly. If you are on medication, get yourself checked from time to time. Do not stop taking the medicine that has been prescribed by your doctor, suddenly.

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
I have a lot of obesity. What ever I eat it does not get digested. And also I feel tired all day.
Hyena,  Thanks for the query. There’s no overnight fix when it comes to healthy weight loss, but you can adjust your lifestyle to promote quick, natural weight loss for the benefit of your health and your appearance. Successful, long-term weight management needs to focus on more than the food you eat and the pounds you lose. It needs to focus on your overall health. Reshape your body and your lifestyle by adopting healthy habits and breaking unhealthy ones. Replace all processed foods in your diet with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean meats, eggs, legumes, nuts, seeds and seafood. Focus on the variety of whole, unprocessed foods you can eat instead of dwelling on the junk food you eliminated from your diet. Eat smaller portions at every meal and avoid going back for seconds. Take a smaller scoop of rice,  half of a piece of chicken instead of a whole piece and one less egg in your morning omelet, for example. Make time for breakfast every morning. Eating breakfast helps prevent overeating and is a habit of people who successfully lose weight. Pack to-go meals instead of eating convenience foods when you’re not home. Store foods like chopped fruits and vegetables or cooked grains, legumes, eggs and meats in your refrigerator so you always have something to grab when you’re in a rush. Exercise for 30 to 60 minutes at least three times per week to build muscle and burn more calories. Pilates, strength training, aerobics, swimming, dancing and yoga or a sport like football are ideal choices. If you’re new to exercising, start with brisk walking and jogging. Adopt physically demanding hobbies like bicycling, hiking, jogging, power walking to promote faster weight loss. If you don’t have time for new hobbies, increase your physical activity with things like walking the dog, playing with the kids or jogging instead of driving to a nearby store or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Weigh yourself weekly and record your weight. Adjust your diet and physical activity according to the progress you’re making.

Whenever I sit down, I feel pain inside my rectum. This happens more often after my stool. It feels like I've to go to washroom again. Stools are semi-formed & rounded shaped lump. 7 days ago I had blood on my stools too. Whenever I go to washroom it is more of gas passing than stool passing. Whenever I sit down I feel pressure on my anus and rectum. It feels urgency to go to washroom It is sometimes accompanied by vomiting. So it is very difficult for me to sit. I'm missing my college from last 2 months. Recently I had got UTI as EColi was found in my urine. I took up Levoflox tab. And there was high SGPT SGoT so I took Heptral tab. And everything was fine. But suddenly this rectum problem has started again. Suggest me a solution.

MBBS, MS - General Surgery
General Surgeon, Hyderabad
By your history it appears that your rectal problem started after getting treated for urinary tract infection, for some the antibiotics you have used can cause enterocollitis due to destruction of healthy bacteria in the gut, as a result you may have the symptoms as noted by you. My suggestion is to take plenty of yogurt/butter milk, and take probiotics for a week, hopefully you will be alright. Failure to improve you need to consult gastroenterologist.
