Now a days maximum people have habit of night grinding because of the stress throughout the day . Either you reduce the level of stress which is not possible so better get a night guard so the ill effect of grinding can be neutralised.

First Aid For Common Tooth Injuries

First Aid For Common Tooth Injuries

A chipped or knocked out tooth can be a very painful condition. Tooth injuries are most often caused during a sports activity or when you take a nasty fall. And such accidents can hamper your general well-being, your ability to enjoy food, your appearance and your precious smile.

Different types of tooth injuries:

  1. A minor chip: A minor tooth fracture usually involves chipping of the enamel only
  2. A major chip: A deeper fracture can involve chipping of both the enamel and the dentin of a tooth
  3. A serious fracture that exposes the nerve and blood vessels in the centre of the teeth
  4. A fully displaced teeth: Here the tooth is forced upward, downward or to the side
  5. A knocked off teeth: One that lands in your hand or shatters in the ground after impact
  6. Trauma injuries: A more serious accident that involves head, neck and facial trauma
  7. Wear and tear: Cavities or chewing and biting on hard objects like pencils, ice cubes, or hard chocolates can also lead to tooth injury
  8. Fighting the fight: When 'I'll break your teeth' ceases to be an empty threat

How are tooth fractures treated?

Treatment depends on the extent of your fractures. A knocked out teeth can be re-implanted in many cases. A permanent tooth that is re-implanted within 30 minutes has the highest chance of success. Here's what you can do to save your tooth:

  1. Collect your broken tooth: Carefully collect the tooth fragments to not cause any additional damage which may prevent re-implantation. Avoid touching the root part of the tooth. Wash it gently in lukewarm water and keep it in a small bowl of milk. Avoid scrubbing or scraping to remove dirt.
  2. Reinsert your teeth if possible: Once you rinse your teeth, try to reinsert your teeth in the cavity. This may be a painful exercise, so proceed only if you think you can bear through it. You can store it between your cheek and gum to prevent drying or in a bowl of whole milk.
  3. Take care of yourself: If there is bleeding, give your mouth a good rinse to clear off the blood that is blocking the view. Identify the source of bleeding and press in with a sterile gauze or cloth.
  4. Give yourself a treat: This is a great way to get your mind off the pain and works wonders for children. Treat yourself with an ice lolly/ frozen pop to ease out the pain. If there is any cut on your gums or lips, another equally tasty home remedy is to cover it with sugar which will temporarily stop the bleeding and the sweetness will help you to forget the pain for the time being.
  5. Go to a dentist: Even if it is a minor chip, it is always advisable to see a dentist, as the cut may be sharp and can eventually end up hurting your tongue.

Your teeth need to last your lifetime, so take good care of them, especially when faced with an injury.

As such your diet habits should be corrected first, yellowish tooth are due to improper dental hygiene, daily your tooth brushing time should be at least 5 min. And for bad breath you can use mouth wash solutions available, and add one cap of chlorhexidine 15 ml of plain water and gargle 2-3 times. If not improved then go for scaling and cleaning.

I have a sensitive problem in my teeth down side and upper side what should I do.

I have a sensitive problem in my teeth down side and upper side what should I do.
A major cause of tooth sensitivity is root exposure. Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need cleaning along with desensitizing procedures and / or artificial enamel filling and / or root canal treatment. Advance procedures can be done with laser too. You may consult me in person. Until then apply a desensitizing paste (sensodyne tooth paste) on the teeth. Wait for 10 to 15 min until you brush your teeth with the same paste. Applying it overnight will be better.

In the start of this year, I suddenly developed white scars inside my oral cavity which burn extremely in contact with spicy food. It was diagnosed as Oral Lichen Planus. Tests done showed I had a auto-immune problem. The doctor has given me a tablet which he said is a steroid and have to rinse it only and then apply Kenacort Gel. There is improvement but it still burns like hell when I eat food. My question is, is it true this is incurable and I am stuck with this for life? Is this the right kind of treatment or is there any other better form of treating this? Why did I get this? If incurable, can I do something to eat food peacefully?

Dear lybrate-user you r worry is quite genuine ,as if it is diagnose as lichen planus ,it takes long time to go .take treatment and get tests done to confirm diagnosis. Once confirmed. The most common signs are white patches on the lining of your mouth (usually your cheeks, tongue and gums). These don't usually hurt, but sometimes painful as in your case ,you may find it painful to eat hot or spicy foods. As the cause is usually not known it is impossible to stop oral lichen planus happening. Precautions don't smoke don't drink large amounts of alcohol do eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Whether you have oral lichen planus or not, you should clean your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day with a fluoride toothpaste. You should also have your teeth and gums checked regularly by a dentist so that any changes in the lining of your mouth can easily be spotted. Usually oral lichen planus only needs to be treated when there are painful symptoms. Sometimes patients with white patches that are not painful complain of a slight roughness of the lining of the mouth. But this usually does not need any treatment. When oral lichen planus does need treating, it is usually done by putting a corticosteroid cream on the area. Some areas may need other treatments, such as immunosuppressants applied to the area. Very rarely you might need to take a corticosteroid or some other, similar, tablets. Follow any advice your dental surgeon give you. This may include avoiding things that make the condition worse, such as spicy foods and things you may be allergic to. Usually oral lichen planus never goes away. Patients will usually continue to have white patches on the lining of the mouth. Treatment will lessen the pain, although it is not usually possible to tell beforehand when the condition will become painful. Therefore have patience and take regular treatment and you will be fine.

Dental Implants - Understanding its Longevity

Dental Implants - Understanding its Longevity

Ever wondered how good it would be if a tooth lost can be placed back in place? That is just what the dental implant does. Unlike the dentures, which replace only the crown portion of the tooth, the implant replaces the crown and the root portion of the tooth.

What’s more the chances of decay are less and there is no fear of mobility.  The dental implant replaces the natural tooth to the maximum extent possible, both in terms of chewing efficiency and stability of the tooth. It can take almost as much pressure as the natural tooth, with hardly any restrictions on diet.

When properly fabricated, the dental implant can last a lifetime. However, this longevity depends on two sets of factors.  The first is the overall oral health of the patient and the second is the post-implant care.

Oral health:  Before deciding that a person is to go for an implant, the following are considered:

  1. The person should have very good jaw bone support: The titanium post that will be used as the root portion is placed into the gum ridge and unless the jaw bone is extremely healthy, it will not be able to support this. Also, the post will be in left in place to get integrated into the bone for about 4 to 6 months.  During this phase, the oral health should be maintained extremely well.

  2. Placement: The implant should be done by someone qualified to do an implant, not just by any dentist. Good fabrication of the implant is very essential for its longevity.

  3. Good oral hygiene measures: This is a prerequisite for choosing, if a person is a candidate for a dental implant. If the oral hygiene habits are doubtful, then it would not be worth investing the time, effort, and money on an implant.

  4. Post-implant insertion care: Once the post is absorbed into the bone and the crown has been placed, meticulous care should be taken to ensure there is no plaque formation in and around the implant. The gums have to be maintained healthy through regular brushing, flossing, interdental brushing and frequent mouth rinses. This will ensure the gums are healthy and can support the implant for years to come.  Regular visits to the dentist every 6 months and scaling in the dental office are also mandatory when you have an implant.

The overall health of the person also ensures success of implants.  Chronic uncontrolled conditions like heart disease, stress, diabetes, and smoking adversely affect the oral health and therefore the success of an implant. These are also associated with a greater risk of gum and periodontal disease.  Managing these optimally also adds to longevity of dental implants. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dentist.

Sir, My teeth are too much yellowish from childhood due to impure water. Now how can I remove this layer from teeth. ...
Probably they need professional cleaning an polishing then you can maintain it afterwards. You might be brushing teeth thrice but technique may be wrong. If the yellowish layer is formed because of fluorides. Cleaning will not help. You need to get tooth colored veneers or laminates. As the name suggests the affected teeth are prepared and tooth colored materials are placed directly or indirectly.

Can you prescribe a good toothpaste of affordable price for white teeth and red gums.
If you have red gums also I think you would first require a scaling polishing by a dentist than use good co soft tooth brush with any standard tooth paste of your choice.
