Dear Lybrate user, Based on your description, it could be Gingivitis. You will require Scaling and Medications, if is fibrous type and severe you may also need surgical intervention. A consultation and treatment from your local dentist or Periodontist will be helpful.

A pain killer may give you relief but my advice is to avoid self medications plus the relief will be temporary better to get the required treatment done so that you never need any painkillers for teeth.

I am 30 year male, I had H1S1 (Herpes Simplex) in Oct 2015. It started with gum swelling right behind my front tooth followed by fever and finally entire mouth got badly infected with 4 prominent sores on lips. Initially doctor thought it is local allergy but when it worsened he prescribed Ocuvir 800 (thrice a day). Slowly things improved, sores and everything went away except the swelling behind the gums from where everything started. It reduced but didn't go away completely. I had read on internet that the H1S1 virus would never go and will come back again and again but with lower intensity. I asked my doc will it come back he said it won't and assured me it is nothing to worry about. He also checked my recent blood report and said I am perfectly normal nothing to worry about. BUT after one and half year I am concerned about following - 1. After first instance in Oct 15, it has returned at least for 5-6 times. Very mild in nature compared to first time. Now it starts from one of the four sores I had on lips. I always take Ocuvir 400 myself, as I see the symptoms and it gradually goes away. Is that right? 2. The swelling behind gums is there since Oct 15. It has never gone. I feel it softens or increases. 3. Should I visit a dentist and get mouth cleaned? Or any other suggestion. 4. Is there a way I can get rid of this forever? Open to nature/homeopathy, Ayurveda as well. Please Suggest! Thanks in advance.

Disease recurs with low intensity. You can do this thing. Take proper balanced vegetarian diet. Take 8 to 10 glasses of water daily to detoxify body. Take fruits and vegetables in daily diet. Avoid non veg and eggs always. Take milk and milk products in diet. This will improve your immunity.

The simplest method of removing minor surface stains is polishing, or micro-abrasion if staining is more intrinsic. Provided that your discolouration is not due to inadequate enamel exposing the dentin, tooth whitening (bleaching) is often the most effective treatment for yellow stained teeth. Advance procedures can be done with laser. Use snowdent tooth paste for whitening until then. Apply snowdent paste on the teeth. Wait for 10 to 15 min. Then brush your teeth with the same paste. Applying it overnight for better results.

As per your complains and symptoms, you have caries with pulpitus. Get an x-ray done to decide whether you need filling or rct. For temporary relief from pain take ketorol dt 2 tabs dissolved in half cup of water and ornof 2 tabs daily for 5 days. And consult the doctor for rct. Rinse your mouth with chlorhexidine mouthwash for 15 days.

Hello, sir my father have been recovered from cancer that is 1st n 2nd stage in neck behind the tongue he has been recover last year by month of september'2014. But still now he is not getting any taste while eating anything. He cannot eat spicy things. His tongue always remain dry due to saliva destroy, so how can he will be able to eat every thing specialy spicy.

BDS, MDS, MBA (Healthcare), FAM
Dentist, Hyderabad
Hello, I am inclined to believe that your father has undergone surgical procedure for a tongue cancer that had progressed to a 2nd stage! well let me try and explain to you in a very simple language about what has progressed and what cab be done. For a tonge cancer in the 2nd stage of neck nodal involvement the surgery involves the surgical removal of the affected part of the tongue with a safe margin of at least one centimeter around the lesion. Also due to the spread of the cancer cells to the neck lymph nodes even those have to be removed. This becomes an extensive procedure and some times the major part of the tongue needs to be removed. So a reconstruction of the tongue is planned where in some other body tissue is used to reconstruct the tongue. Also radiation therapy is also additionally given to the tongue area to completely kill the cancer cells. All these procedures will destroy some health cells also and majority of them which are on the surface are salivary cells which get destroyed. The nerves of the tongue also get affected and hence the loss of taste. The problem of dryness of the tongue will be persistent for a long time to come and there are chances even if very minute that these salivary glands might grow back and get back to normal function. But in the mean while he could use salivary substitutes that are available to keep his tongue moist. His taste sensation should also keep improving over time. Keep up the regular check ups with the doctor and ask him the details of the salivary substitute and the condition of the nerves supplying the tongue. Any queries I am willing to answer after you have given me more details about the procedure that was carried out. Thanks regards Dr. Siddharth bhalerao mds (oral and maxillofacial surgeon)

I am 17 years old and my front two teeth is yellow before 10 yrs. How can I make my teeth purely white. Must reply plzz.
Naturally our teeth colour ranges from pearly white to pale yellow so everyone cannot hv white teeth. Get scalling n polishing done by dentist. If you r not happy with your teeth shade later, you can get bleaching done by dentist which'll lighten your teeth by 2-3 shades. Alternatively you can use a teeth whitening toothpaste such as snowdent after scalling. Whitening gels used daily along with customized dental trays provided by dentist r also available in the market. Avoid heavily coloured foods, tea n coffee, cool drinks, smoking n tobacco products as they stain teeth.

Since you are also getting fever, chills and body pains, I would suggest don't take it lightly or assume it is a normal due to removal of wisdom tooth. Headache may be incidental to the fever and tooth removal.

I have a tooth pain yesterday, and I can see its bit swollen next to tooth, it pains a bit. Any solution?
Hi, tooth pain mostly indicates decay in your tooth. You should immediately see a dentist for a permanent solution. If the decay has reached the dental pulp then a root canal treatment would be necessary. Since you complain of swelling also in that region, there might be presence of infection. Clinical evaluation by a dentist is a must before the diagnosis is made. Regards Dr. Dhruv anand.

Dental Care Tips for Diabetes Patients

Dental Care Tips for Diabetes Patients

Diabetes is a chronic, systemic disease and affects all parts of the body. While its effect on the nerves, eyes, kidneys, and skin is more common, their oral effects are less known. However, diabetes will vouch how they lost tooth and have dry mouth after their sugars went out of control.

  1. Oral Symptoms in Diabetics: There is a strong correlation between oral health and poorly controlled blood sugars. Some of the common oral indications of diabetes are as follows.
  2. Dry Mouth: There is less amount of saliva, which brings with it a whole lot of symptoms including soreness of the mucosa, ulcers, increased chances of infection, gum inflammation and tooth decay.
  3. Thrush: The saliva has higher sugar levels and attracts fungus (Candida in particular) which thrives in this dry, sugary environment. This produces a burning sensation in the mouth.
  4. Periodontal Disease: The gums get severely infected with gingival recession, where the gum line recedes exposing more of the tooth (tooth length seems to have increased). There is “pocket” formation, or space between the tooth and the gum which hosts a variety of bacteria. The periodontal ligament loses its strength to hold the tooth in place, and thereby teeth become mobile. If not worked upon in time, there could be multiple teeth lost.

As much as it sounds alarming, it is not. There are easy, simple ways to manage these. In fact, good overall management of diabetes will ensure the oral symptoms are also maintained under control. Following are some things to do which will help in managing diabetes in general and the oral symptoms in particular:

As soon as diabetes is diagnosed, visit a dentist to take stock of the oral health condition. Any identified problem should be treated to avoid progression.

  1. Keep a close watch to ensure blood sugar remains as close to normal as possible.

  2. Switch to a toothbrush with soft or extra-soft bristles. This will help reduce the pressure on the gums and thereby prevent gum bleeding

  3. After every meal, remember to brush the teeth.

  4. Flossing at least once a day will help remove food deposits between the teeth. Alternately, use interdental brushes.

  5. Rinse at least twice daily using an antiseptic mouthwash.

  6. Denture-wearers should always clean them daily and never go to sleep with the denture in the mouth.

  7. Smoking with diabetics is a strict no-no, work on quitting at the earliest.

  8. Visit a dentist every 3 months to ensure oral issues are identified at the earliest and treatment done with minimal intervention.

  9. Any dental procedure should be done only when sugar levels are under control.

These will ensure not just oral health but also overall control of diabetes.

Use proper brushing techniques with a fluridated toothpaste. Brush, floss n use mouthwash twice daily. Massage your gums with your finger tips after brushing. Keep your tongue clean. Rinse your mouth well after each meal. Visit your dentist for dental checkups every 6 months to detect n prevent dental probs and also get scalling done once in a year.
