Baby Bottle Caries In Bottle Fed Children

PGDHHM, BDS
Dentist, Gurgaon
Baby Bottle Caries In Bottle Fed Children

What is baby bottle tooth caries?

Baby bottle tooth decay is caused by the frequent and long-term exposure of a child's teeth to liquids containing sugars. Among these liquids are milk, formula, fruit juice, sodas and other sweetened drinks.
The condition is associated with breastfed and bottle fed infants who have prolonged feeding habits or with children whose pacifiers are frequently dipped in honey, sugar or syrup. The sweet fluids left in the mouth while the infant is sleeping increase the chances of cavities.

Why should I be worried about baby bottle tooth decay?

Giving an infant a sugary drink at nap or nighttime is harmful because, during sleep, the flow of saliva decreases, allowing the sugary liquids to linger on the child's teeth for an extended period of time. If left untreated, decay can result, which can cause pain and infection. Severely decayed teeth may need to be extracted. If teeth are infected or lost too early due to baby bottle tooth decay, your child may develop poor eating habits, speech problems, crooked teeth and damaged adult teeth.

How can I prevent baby bottle tooth decay?

1. Never allow a child to fall asleep with a bottle containing milk, formula, juice or other sweetened liquids.
2. Clean and massage the baby's gums to help establish healthy teeth with a moistened gauze square or washcloth.
3. Brushing should begin upon eruption of the first baby tooth. When brushing a child's teeth, use a soft toothbrush and water.
4. Parents should first bring their child to the dentist when the child is between 6 and 12 months old for a checkup.
5. Decrease consumption of sugar, especially between meals.
6. Children should be weaned from the bottle as soon as they can drink from a cup, usually by their first birthday.

My son is 6 years old and he is suffering from Asthma . Please tell me how should I take care of him. Moreover please suggest me what should be given and not in his diet.

M.D.Pediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Mumbai

Child learns from us, so don't force her to take feed. For next 5- 7 days you, yourself eat the food that you want her to eat. Don't offer her, just eat your self. Make her habitual to see those thing to being eaten. After that, Use distraction method to feed. Bring her out in park or her favorite place or play cartoon. Now offer her food, But don't use words like - "beta khalo. Just keep talking and make her involve with the things and while talking when she opens her mouth offer her food and complete her words from your side. But don't show any expression as you are feeding her. Keep your conversation continue. If she spits, hold for 2-3 minutes and try again. Initially, every time gave her atleast 1/2 hour to feed. Keep yourself calm and cheerful.

You have to get her checked and treated for congenital heart disease, there are no miracles in any system of medicine and your daughter is quite underweight for her weight though her birth weight was just okay according to indian standards.

10 Tips to Tackle Sibling Rivalry

10 Tips to Tackle Sibling Rivalry

While siblings are the force that breathes life into any family structure, it has also been seen as a challenge of sorts to manage siblings and bring out the best in each one of them. In any family unit, there are a number of entities who need to be nurtured in a certain way to ensure that their identities are not hampered by a "one size fits all" style of parenting. Every child is different and will need to be handled differently. Besides this, there are other related challenges that will contribute to the quality of the relationships between the siblings, as well as the rivalry that they may feel towards each other when it comes to attention, achievements and varied other factors.

Read on to know the ten tips to tackle sibling rivalry:

  1. Make Friends before Birth: encourage your first born to connect even before the birth of the new baby by including him or her in the changes you see and feel. Planning for the new baby with your first born will also help in such cases.
  2. Staying positive is a big factor that will help the children in feeling confident despite their different qualities and strengths.
  3. Comparison is a big no no. Stay away from these kind of comparisons so that the children do not feel like they have to fight with each other for your praise.
  4. Time Sharing: Ensure that you divide your time well and indulge each child in his or her area of interest so that they feel like you are always there for each of them.
  5. Harmonious Start to the day: this will ensure that the children have a special bond at the end of the day. Make sure that they help each other and divide chores accordingly. The older siblings should be given the care giving tasks while the younger ones should be taught to obey them and play along.
  6. Humour them: It is a known fact that humour is the best medicine that breaks even the most tension filled atmosphere.
  7. Family Meetings: Hold family meetings to discuss important things and even intense fights so that everyone's needs and issues are addressed.
  8. Empathy: Teaching your child to empathize with others will help him or her steer clear of needless rivalry at home too.
  9. Ignore the Small: Let them figure out the smaller fights, yet always be there to address the bigger issues so that they know you are there for them.
  10. Equal Treatment: Treating them equally does not mean doing the same thing for each of them. It means giving them equal time and attention with personalized treatment to suit varied temperaments. This will also give them a lot of individual confidence which eventually kills any feelings of rivalry.

My kid he is just 3 years old what type of food I can give him to get normal weight. He is just 7kgs.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Jodhpur
7 kg is a right weight for approximately 6 months of age. The right weight for 3 years old child is 14 kg. This situation is grade 4 malnutrition. It is a significant ill health and by itself an indication of admission. Reach pediatrician early get the child examined an give proper treatment. Most of such kids have underlying medical disorder which is to be adressed. This provisional advice provided by me stands subject to the patient undergoing a physical examination and is based entirely on inputs provided by patient/attendants. The patient is advised for physical examination at earliest.

This is common that after 6 month of age when complememantary feeding is started some of food is not accepted by baby intially. This is due to like and dislike of food. And also because of underdeveloped taste bud. Try one food at one time three to four day if he did not accept stop that food and try other food for same.
