Have back problem whenever I sit anywhere my backbone started paining. Please suggest some medicine.

BHMS, MD - Homeopathy
Homeopath, Delhi
Hi dear lybrate user if you have back pain since long time you must always consult a doctor in physical who can examine and tell you why this is happening. But if it is a mild and pain of recent origin, modern medicine would suggest you some painkillers and muscle relaxants, but these have temporary results only and long term usage of these medicine have side effects. So the best treament would be homeopathic medicine (like bryonia and rhustox are common homeopathic medicine) for internal medication and along with this take phyisiotherapy session for 3-4 days only and you will be completely fine.

I met with an accident on Dec 2013 and my femur got fractured so I have a rod in my right leg. Till now I did not removed the rod do any problem persists in future?

Orthopedist, Solapur
Hi lybrate-user. It is not necessary to get the rod removed until and unless you face with the problems of difficulty in walking due to presence of rod, infection of the rod, breakage of the rod due to re trauma or in cases of re fracture of the bone itself. I'm saying this because removal of the rod itself is another surgical procedure and sometimes can be very challenging. Hence get it removed only if you have problems related to the presence of rod in your femur.

I am 58 year old male and have left shoulder joint pain and knee cap pain for the last one month. What precautions I should take ?

Diploma in Acupuncture, Pranic Healing, MD - Acupuncture
Acupuncturist, Bangalore
For joint pains try this. Identify the mid point between the ankle bone and tendons and give pressure with a blunt edge on either side of your foot for 2 minutes. Also give pressure in the web between 2nd and 3rd finger from your toe for 2 minutes. Finally give a good massage for both feet in hot water. Identify the dipping portion on the back of your knee folding. Press this dip with both middle fingers and hold your knee with your thumbs for support. Please swing 20 times morning and evenings. This will relieve your problem. Consult after 10 days.

She is probably having degenerative meniscal tear with early stage osteoarthritis. Weight reduction (if overweight) and physiotherapy should help.

Quad Clenches: Lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, Hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Short Arcs: Lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight Leg Raise: Lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise.

Hello sir 8 months before I was attack by dengue. Now presently I am suffering from a fever and also feeling pain in both legs. Now my question is that. Can dengue repeat twice to the same person. please reply sir thanks.

MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
Dengue has four different strains. So if you get infected by one strain type then the possibility is that you can get affected again by a different strain. However this time around the dengue outbreak is not as worse as compared to last year. Plain viral fever is on the rise and mimics symptoms of dengue. Get yourself tested properly to rule out all possibilities. Take plenty of fluids.

My mother has acute joint pain in toes ankle knee and swelling what she will do to free herself from this fatal problem.

BPTh/BPT, MPTh/MPT
Physiotherapist, Noida
Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

Hot packs are very effective as they dilate blood vessels and increase blood flow, delivering needed nutrients and oxygen to cells in the area being heated, aiding the removal of cell waste and promoting healing.

I am having this pain in my muscle while swimming is it something to worry about.

MSc in Orhopedic Physiotherapy (UK), BPTh/BPT

Swimming injuries most commonly occur as a result of: overtraining poor technique sudden spike in workload (non-graduated) treatment involves manual therapy but more importantly, finding the root cause of the injury and modifying stroke technique to prevent the issue from reoccurring. Common treatment modalities include: adopt a good stroke technique mix it up! avoid overtraining in one particular style of swimming core strengthening, rotator cuff strengthening and land based exercises done pre, post and during your swimming season. Tens machine. Ultrasound. Mobilisations and manipulations. Rest, ice, compression, elevation (rice). Please see a physiotherapist for detail assessment and management of your condition. Best wishes.
