Hi Doctor my Daughter (4.6 years) has fever since 5 days, last month she has detected typhoid of early stage then have given her dose of Taxim o forte 5 days. Now from past 5 days she is again fever when she sleep in night or afternoon. I has done test of widal but its came negative. Kindly suggest can I give her now azithromycin as prescribed by our doctor.

Widal test in typhoid fever becomes +ve after a week of fever. Get repeat after 7 days of fever. If, last time she had confirm typhoid fever, it may be relapse since tt was discontinued after 5 days. Now, azithromycin may be given if there is definite symptoms of infection sensitive to it.

Even small children will have psychological problems. Excessive crying may be because of conditions like separation anxiety. Fear etc. You must try to find out the reason. You can take the opinion of child psychologist.

Hi doc, my son is 5 months old. I am giving both breastfeeding and bottle for him. Once I started with formula his poo changed from yellow to green colour and it's smelling awful. But he seems to be fine. M giving nan pro 1. Is he fine? Or I need to change another brand.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Jodhpur
The rule of thumb is exclusive breastfeeding till 6 months of age. Bottle feeding at any age is more harmful to health.

Nursing Bottle Caries- Causes and Management

Nursing Bottle Caries- Causes and Management

Nursing improperly often becomes a big reason for tooth decay and caries in babies. The way out is to get the baby tooth cared for from the very first day. This form of tooth decay is associated with nursing, when the baby sucks the pacifier, or takes other sugary juices or drinks, or formula milk from a nursing bottle.

The main causes of nursing bottle caries:
The babies are often fed in nursing bottles or feeding bottles, and the bottle nipple often stays in the mouth for long; sometimes overnight also if not taken care of. Again, the babies are pacified with pacifiers, which are often dipped in honey or a sugar solution, and this again brings in more reasons for dental caries. In any of the situations described, the baby's newly formed teeth which are susceptible to all forms of decay and damages while being gentle and new can get cavities. The sugary liquids and milk can form a coating on the teeth which brings in cavities.

How to prevent the nursing caries:
The best option to prevent is not to leave the baby with the bottle or pacifier for long. Again, the pacifier or the bottle should be always washed properly, sterilized and not left in the mouth of the baby uncared, especially during sleep time, when the baby sleeps while sucking onto them.

There are some steps to follow to prevent the early tooth decay and maintain baby dental hygiene. They are:

1. Even before the first tooth comes out, massage and clean the baby's gums with a clean washcloth or soft cotton everyday, and after every long feeding.

2. You don't need toothpaste to start brushing the first few new teeth that come out. Just brush without a toothpaste and use a very soft gentle brush to form the habit. In areas where no tooth has come up, brush and massage the gums only.

  • When all the teeth have come up, start flossing everyday
  • Try to take the baby for a dental checkup at least every year if not every six months.
  • Try to cut down on the consumption of extra sweet beverages. Add some water to the fruit juice to dilute the concentration and sweetness.

All these steps mentioned are great to start healthy and good dental care and hygiene, and if you follow them well, then dental caries will be away.

You feed nan only if you must and with a cup and spoon or with a sipper and not feed him from a bottle. Also send me his tsh report and keep in touch so that I can guide you regularly as your personal doctor. Frequent motion is due to 1) bottle feeding and 2) possibly due to hypothyroidism. As you are giving formula feed give boiled water with s spoon in between feeds and reply to me.

My son is of 4 year 6 months doing potty in clothes often may I know how to resolve the issue.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda, Bangalore
Potty training need to be practiced. Children often ignore urges in between Playing mind. Understand whether he knows the passing of stools. If so, no issues, as he grows it will be alright. Make him sit and try toilet before going out in the morning regularly. Few children respond well while reducing packet milk intake for few days.

For running nose put saline nasal drops frequently into each nostril. Cough for such a long duration might need evaluation.

All symptoms are pointing towards viral infection, so you have maintain hydration by giving milk, kanji water, tender coconut water or plain water with ors. For fever give paracetamol as per your doctor's advised dose. Once fever comes down he will start eating meanwhile look for danger signs and report immediately to pediatrician. Danger signs are 1) no urine for more than 6 hours. 2) vomiting continues 3) blood in motion. 4) dull baby 5) high irregular fever 6) irritable, drowsy.
