I have just adopted labrador pup he is 35 days old. My concern is when should I get him his 1st vaccination. As from whom I adopted he said on 42 days direct booster I consulted 1 vet doctor he said you should start from, 33 days age I am confused. Kindly guide He wants to bite on everything I think he is getting irritated as his teeth are erupting kindly reply.

Vaccination from vet should start from 45 day of puppy birth. Its the time when dhppi or 9 in 1 or 7 in 1 vaccine starts. This vaccine mainly immunes puppy from diseases like parvo and distemper. Upto 4 and half month, a series of vaccines will be given to puppy. Consult your nearby vet and go for vaccination whenever he or she calls your puppy.

I am having a female dog and it is 4 years old. It was having her menstrual cycle. Its been 22 days as of today and I don't think there is much bleeding. I am not sure of it tho. Today it ran out of the house and got mated with an another street male dog. Now is there a chance of possible pregnancy ? Is there any medicine apart from surgery to use as a contraceptive to drop the pregnancy ?

Nothing should be done till 35 days from today. On 35 th day meet a proper veterinarian, get an ultrasound done. If your dog is getting pregnant, there are safer medicines available, but should be started only after the the ultrasound examination confirms this.

I have a labra puppy 6 weeks old. His mother is no more. I worried about his health and food. How much quantity he needs. His weight is just 0.8kg. And Today after 18 hours he pooped at last but just after an hour and his meal. He pooped again in a minute. This time the poop was a 20% liquid and 80% solid. Is it to worry about pooping twice or thrice in row. Please help. I am totally unknow about the puppy care.

Provide liquid diet for 3-4 days. Keep under shade in the sunny part of day. Take for walking in the late evenings. Give good excercise in the evenings and then offer well balanced diet.

Is Kennel Cough Vaccine Really Necessary for Dogs?

B.V.Sc. & A.H.
Veterinarian, Bangalore
Is Kennel Cough Vaccine Really Necessary for Dogs?

Many animals receive “kennel cough” vaccines that include bordetella and cpi and cav-2 every 6 to 9 months without evidence that this frequency of vaccination is necessary or beneficial. In contrast, other dogs are never vaccinated for kennel cough and diseases are not seen. Cpi immunity lasts at least 3 years when given intranasally and cav -2 immunity lasts a minimum of 7 years parenterally for cav-i. These two virus in combination with bordetella bronchiseptica are the agents, which are often associated with kennel cough, however, other factors play an important role in diseases (eg. Stress, dust, humidity, molds, mycoplasma, etc.).

Thus, kennel cough is not a vaccine preventable disease because of the complex factors associated with this disease. Furthermore, this is often a mild to moderate self limiting disease. It's just like common cold in humans. A course of antibiotics usually is enough to treat the condition. I generally do not recommend kennel cough vaccines unless dogs are staying in a boarding facility that requires them.

I have a pet dog who is 2 years 6 months old. 1 year back he got hit by stick in his balls. It cnt walk properly now he keep his back leg folded, we do takes nerobian tablets very freguently but now a day even after taking tablets he do not get well. So please help me out with some medicine and advise.

Veterinarian,
Kindly get him assessed by a vet nearby. Explore possibility of any fresh trauma/injury which is causing folded back leg. You may need radiographs to confirm any arthritis or bone lesions. Take care.

STRATEGIC DEWORMING GUIDELINES

Master of sciences, B.V.Sc. & A.H.
Veterinarian, Salem
Parasites don't want to kill your kitten or puppy; they just want to use them as a dinner plate! Our goal is to prevent that from happening. Intestinal parasites have been around forever and are not going away, but you can control them with the proper deworming schedule. Hookworms and roundworms are by far the most common intestinal worms found in puppies and kittens. Roundworms compete with your pet for food, while hookworms live on blood, causing anemia.

Rough hair coats, diarrhea, malnutrition progressing to intestinal obstruction, and anemia are common issues with worms. We want to feed our pets - not the parasites. That is why we deworm dogs and cats. Don't wait until you are sure your pet has parasites because they have already caused damage at this point.

STRATEGIC DEWORMING GUIDELINES

Strategically deworming dogs and cats is a practice recommended by the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists (AAVP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

DEWORMING PUPPIES AND KITTENS
Worms in puppies and kittens are common. This growth phase of their life is when they are most susceptible! Knowing when to worm puppies and kittens is important.
• Deworm puppies and kittens at 2, 4, 6, & 8 weeks of age, then again at 12 & 16 weeks of age.
• Deworm again at 6 months and 1 year.
• Then deworm as an adult.

ADULTS - WORMING DOGS AND CATS

We are recommending the standard here. If your dog or cat is a big hunter, they will need more frequent deworming - you must assess the risk for your pet.

• General Dog or Cat Worming: Thrice a year for life.
o Dogs put everything in their mouth and need deworming twice a year to eliminate the parasites they will pick up. Deworm outside cats thrice a year for the same reason.
• Cats that are strictly inside animals: Deworm twice a year.
• Cats that like to hunt: 3 times a year may be necessary.

NEWLY ACQUIRED ANIMALS
No matter what the history or age, assume they have parasites!
• Deworm immediately and repeat in 2 weeks.
• Then put on the above adult program.

WORMS IN DOGS AND CATS

DOGS :
• Roundworms and Hookworms
• Roundworms, Hookworms, Whipworms & Tapeworms

CATS:

• Tapeworm, Roundworm & Hookworms

I have a female labra 2 years old of normal dimensions. She got crossed with a street dog and I do not want her to bear any puppies suggest me the most appropriate pill.

MVSc (Ph.D pursuing)
Veterinarian, Hyderabad
Your labra can only get pregnant if the street dogz penis was stuck inside the vagina for atleast 15min. This is called knotting. Otherwise chances of conceiving is nill and can lead to unecessary complications by hormonal contraceptive pills. In case you havnt seen how long was the knotting, ill suggest you wait till 38days, n see if the size of the milk teats by tht time. If yes, then we can start treatment. Please note tht thr is no harm waiting till then. Infact much safer.

I have a q regarding my dog's health. he is having vomiting since last 15 days. whatever he eats in next moment he throws out. I gave him digene 1 tbspun in a day as prescribed by his doc nd sporolac powder with food also. he is 2.5 years pomerenian. plz guide me what to do next to improve his health.

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian,
Please investigate. Vomiting may not a disease in itself, but a sign observed in many diseases. Vomiting (I'll call it as - Regurgitation) for 15 days shouldn't be taken lightly. To start with - you can get a chest and abdomen x ray done - to identify if there is any radio-opaque foreign body, and send blood sample to identify if there is any metabolic involvement. Hope this is helpful.

Hello doctor my dog, 2yr old male great dane vomits the food particularly at night. Around 6 hours after having the food which is mainly 3 egg with rice and vegetables - home made food. The food is as it is, undigested this happened twice continuously at night now. And happens once or twice a month (anytime, no time relevance) what should be done. What is better food for him, something we can prepare at home? is it something to do with rice or egg yellow?

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian,
Great dane is a giant breed, and needs optimal proteins to maintain his health. The food he's currently being offered doesn't appear to fulfill his requirements. You can explore to offer him 650-750gms of boiled boneless chicken + 150gms of overcooked rice in a day. About 4 boiled egg whites can be given as well. Please avoid egg yellow. Alternatively - you can explore offering him giant breed pet food, or a combination of pet food + home cooked food. Regarding vomiting - please check food timings, overdue deworming etc. Hows his stools? you may need to add some meds to enhance emptying of stomach contents down the intestines, if he vomits the food as it is.

You should check for ticks infestation. Redness indicate mixed microbial infection. Wokazole is good enough for minor infection, but larger area of redness, require systemic antibiotic treatment.
