Lactose Intolerance - How to Deal With It?

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health
Pediatrician, Hyderabad
Lactose Intolerance - How to Deal With It?

People suffering from lactose intolerance find it difficult to digest the lactose or sugar in milk, which results in gas, bloating or even diarrhea. An inadequacy of an enzyme called lactase, produced in the small intestine, is the root of lactose intolerance, a condition also known as lactose malabsorption.

How to deal with lactose intolerance in your child?

  1. Cutting out on dairy products does not mean you would be deprived of sufficient amount of calcium. Find alternate sources of calcium in your food apart from dairy products, for instance, spinach, rhubarb, pinto beans oranges, milk substitutes such as rice milk or soy milk, canned salmon, juices, breads and broccoli. Do give your child foods rich in vitamin D such as liver, eggs and yogurt. Asking your child to spend some time out in the sun can be a great idea in this regard, as well. Your physician will prescribe you with calcium and vitamin D supplements.
  2. Limit your child’s intake of dairy products. Opt for small servings of milk so as to reduce the chances of gastrointestinal troubles. Your child should consume milk with other foods to delay the digestive process. Try out a variety of dairy products as not all of them possess the same amount of lactose. Buy lactose free products or use lactase enzyme drops or tablets that may aid your child in digesting different dairy products.
  3. Probiotics are living organisms that exist in your intestine and help you in maintaining a healthy digestive system. Yoghurt and other supplement capsules are rich in probiotics. Hence, they can be perfect choices for your child. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gastroenterologist.

Better to start inhaler as per advise of a child specialis. Use asthma preventor medicine by inhalation regularly. Keep decreasing if child comfortable. 50% children grow out of asthma by age of 14 years. Inhalers do not cause habit.

Your advice on myths about Asthma is superb. But we have in mind that inhalers with steroids if used for long time will reduce the elasticity of the lungs. It is is addictive and acts on the psychology of the patient. Is it advisable to continue inhalers even if symptoms are not there. Is Asthma curable. Even after a long remission period is there chances of relapse if the inhaler is discontinued. Please clarify.

MD - Pulmonary Medicine
Pulmonologist, Khammam
Hi you have many questions steroids r the main stay of therapy for asthma they reduce inflammation which goes on continuously in the bronchial wall steroids do not cause any problem even on longterm because inhaled ones act only at d desired site they r not addictive not cause any psychological dependence inhalers shoulld b continued in lower dose even if symptoms r not there they should not be discontinued.

Dear Doctor, How can I increase my focus (concentration) on doing (uninteresting, but important) tasks? Many times I know some task is very important and needs to be done, yet I don? T find enough willpower to do it. And if I force myself to do it, then I can? T properly focus on it. Most of the books tell us to meditate and breathing exercises. I tried as described, but no help. Could you please tell me about how I can solve this (lack of focus.

BHMS
Homeopath,
Dear Mr Rahul....as per your given details you are 27 years old.....you are matured enough to detect what is important for your life or career.....Lack of focus means you are sharing your concern to so many extra things that you cannot put your full effort on a single task when it is needed.....This can obviously ruin your career.....First stop thinking about those things from which you will gain nothing....Secondly set a goal in your life...everyone have ambition in life....set your goal for the next five years and also plan how to achieve it in next 5 years.....Thirdly boost your self-confidence.....Be social, communicate with people other than your age group...talk with them without any hesitation...Share your views with them on any topics....listen to their views with due respect....Last but surely not the least, Always believe in yourself....don't let any type of inferiority complex make you its prey

Rest the medicine will do, so taking a correct treatment, in correct dosage for an adequate period is necessary for getting cured, and dots treatment is best in most of the scenarios.

Most often it's viral infection. Fever usually settles down in 3 to 4 days. Cough takes 7 to 10 days. Continue same treatment. Small children get frequent infections because of low immunity.
