I am 28 years old. I got sometimes nervous when I speak. I am not able to introduce myself in a meeting. I have tried Siddha medicine. But I am not fully recovered. Could anyone help me regarding my problem.

I would suggest you to take any kind of medicines. For some people social anxiety is pretty pervasive. The most common example is anxiety over public speaking. Making small talk, eating in front of others and using public restrooms also can trigger worry and unease for some. 1. Try a self-help manual. Self-help manuals are designed to supplement therapy, but they’re also good tools for working on your own. 2. Work with a therapist. If social anxiety is stopping you from doing things you want or need to do, or you haven’t had much success with self-help, seek professional help. Find a therapist who specializes in anxiety disorders. You can start your search here. 3. Practice deep breathing every day. It’s helpful to engage in deep breathing before an anxiety-provoking social situation, But practice this technique every day. This way it becomes second nature, and you don’t hyper focus on deep breathing and miss an entire conversation. 5. Create objective goals. People tend to disqualify the positive when they feel anxious, That’s why therapists encourage clients to create objective behavioral goals, he said. These are behaviors that anyone in the room would be able to observe. It doesn’t matter how you feel or whether you’re blushing or sweating (which you can’t control anyway) in a social situation. For instance, if you’re working in a group setting, the objective behavior would be to make three comments. This also gives you a good barometer for judging your progress. Again, you’re not focusing on whether you felt nervous. Rather, you’re focusing on whether you performed the actual behavior. Also, avoid focusing on others’ reactions. It doesn’t matter how your colleagues received your idea in the meeting. What matters is that you actually spoke up. It doesn’t matter whether a girl or guy said yes to your dinner invite. What matters is that you actually asked. It doesn’t matter how your child’s teacher reacted when you declined to volunteer for yet another school trip. What matters is that you were assertive and respected your own needs. 6. Keep a rational outlook. Dispute both bleak thoughts that undermine your performance and fuel your anxiety, and equally unrealistic thoughts that are irrationally positive. If you’re asking someone out, it’s not rational to think, “They’re definitely going to say yes.” But it is rational to consider, “They might,”. If social anxiety is sabotaging your goals and stopping you from living the life you want, seek help and try the above strategies. Social anxiety is highly treatable, You can get better, and grow in the process. All the very best.

You should go to speech therapist, but at the same time you can work on speaking in social situations. For that you should 1st talk in front of mirror ,then with 1person, then 2 ,then with familiar person in social situations and then speak to stranger person in public place, this will boost your confidence.

Smoking and pitch of the voice is not related. You need to specify how does your voice sound. Is it like female. If it is like female you need to go for voice Assessment and therapy.

Hello Mr. lybrate-user, change in voice calls for professional help. If you had deep voice that means you must be trying to lower down the throat and speak. If you were changing your voice. It can lead to some problem in voice box. First thing throat should be examine and than we can reach on the conclusion. But for now take deep breath through nose and than talk, see if there is some betterment in your voice. If not than meet speech therapist.

Nowadays my vocabulary sound is not good. It's very tough for others to understand . Mostly 'S' sound is coming while talking. What to do for this ? How can I change.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Breathe deeply and exhale on a hisssssssing sound. Repeat 10 times. Proper breathing is the foundation for a healthy voice AND control over nervous energy that can make the voice quiver. Say “Mm-mmm (as in yummy) Mmm-hmm (like yes) ” Repeat 5 times. This develops mask resonance, which creates a clean and vibrant sound by creating a clean approximation of the cords and a resonance that will sound great and project easily. Say “Mm-mmm. Mmm-hmm.” up and down your vocal range, from low to middle to high and back again, 10 times.

Stammering can be made lesser only and only by speech therapy. So you should take the help of a speech therapist. Also, i'd suggest you to visit a psychologist as confidence plays a great role in dealing with this problem. I'd suggest you to speak very slowly, word by word. People may make fun of this but believe me, slowly you'll get better at it. Hope your query is answered. Feel free to ask if you have any doubts. Wishing you good health.

Can anyone suggest speech therapist for curing stammering and speech disorder in adults.

MASLP
Speech Therapist, Noida
Stammering can be by muscle tightening or visible difficulty speaking which causes anxiety, fear, or loss of self-esteem. Some of the strategies you can use- 1-Speak slowly and simply. Try saying one syllable words, one at a time. Strive to have each word come out clearly before moving on to the next word. 2-Monitor your speech as you talk, looking for which words or mental states might cause stuttering to occur or worsen. 3-Don't be afraid to leave pauses or silence in your speech. Go at your own pace as you practice. 4-Practice words that you notice as problematic. 5-Gradually increase the length of words and sentences. Overtime you will work towards implementing problematic words in your speech. Consult SLP.

Hello, I am 25 year old and have stammering problem which is now causing serious psychological problems. I have lost interest in almost every thing, meeting with friends social places. I have started feeling that I would not be able to any thing in my career. When ever I do self reading it is fluent but when I speak in front of public my hands and legs start trembling heavily, my heartbeat and breathing rate heavily. Even small work seems like a heavy task for me. I don't know how would I match up in this competitive time, weather I would get any job or not. My mind is always engulfed with all these negative thoughts which is causing severe stress in me. I am skeptical about medication provided by psychologist thats why I have not consulted any doctor yet. Please help.

Good Evening, Stammering is not an uncommon problems and if left untreated since childhood may cause significant health problems. I am sorry you are having to deal with the distressing situations that you have mentioned and more importantly that it has started to affect your career. Although, most of the stammering problems are related to anxiety some of them are related to organic causes in the larynx. However, since psychological issues are a greater causative factor for the problem of stammering it can be very effectively treated with psychotherapy or counseling and medications, a combination of which is better then either of them alone. I believe stammering if not treated may also lead to depression which will also improve as the stammering improves and you can lead a competitive and healthy life. I am sure you can overcome you problem with a little help. Look forward to hearing from you. If you need help with booking an appointment online with me on this website either text, audio or video appointment for confidential and private consultation you may do so by contacting the help desk of Lybrate.
