My daughter is 2 years old. until three days ago she was very fluent in her speech. But all of a sudden now she stammers so much that she can not even mention her own name. Please as a parent I am worried as I see my daughter struggle to speak. Please is there a solution to this problem?

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. Don't worry. This could just be a momentary problem. From some sort of learning spill. Do not try to advise against it. Do not try to correct the child's behaviour yourself. Just don't do anything and don't mention the stammering to the child and worry her more about it.

If development is normal there is no tongue tie then we can wait as usually children are able to speak by 2 years. If she is able to express herself by gestures it's okay.

Dear Lybrate user. In many of the cases Stammering has two important reasons. Vocal chord misalignment or other problems are the primary reason. For this vocal chord complaint, you should consult an ENT specialist and get it corrected. Second reason is purely psychological. Stammer therapy can help you in psychological reasons. Take care.

When I write, I sound intelligent, and can get my Point across effectively. However, every time I Open my mouth to speak, I sound like a total Idiot. Everything always comes out wrong; Nothing ever comes out right. I can never get Across what I am trying to convey. People never" get the point" of what I am saying; it's very Frustrating. I have a lot of intelligent thoughts And good ideas, but if I try to express them Verbally, it always sounds really garbled and Disjointed. I am eloquent when I write, but When I talk, I stammer and fumble and look like a Fool. What is the reason for this?

Dear sir expression of thoughts can be either emotional or conceptual among the conceptual expression of thoughts, there are two variants 1. Through writing 2. Through speaking so, there are three neural circuits in brain that express that you feel and the three neural circuits are in various stages of development in various individuals so some are good speakers but poor writers some are good writers but poor speakers some are good writers as well as good speakers some are neither:) (same way, some people would like to read a mail to know the response. Some prefer a phone call. Why? it is because just like how you have various pathways for expression of thought, there are various input pathways too. Those whose neural circuits for symbols is stronger prefer a sms or mail. Those whose neural circuits for sounds is stronger prefer a phone call) now coming back to your problem your neural circuits that deals with speaking (from brocas area) is" relatively weaker" than your intellect and the neural circuits that deals with writing which are very very strong. So you are finding it difficult to talk but, please wait your speech pathway is not really weak. It appears to be relatively weaker because your thinking and writing circuits are extremely strong. In other words, you think faster, your hands are able to cope up with that speed, but your mouth is not yet coping up, and hence you stammer. The good news: a person with good intellect and good writing skills (as evidenced from your question) can easily develop his speech too. All it needs is self confidence [which I have given here ;) ] and practice [which you have to do] start practising today. Sorry, now itself:):):) best wishes for a successful career.

I am 24 year old male. I have some problem of puberphonia at times and hoarse/hazy voice as I understand from the feedback that I get. What should I do now? I've read online that speech/voice therapy can help me but can someone tell me what would be the duration and approximate cost of treatment? Thanks.

Hello lybrate-user as mentioned above you have puberphonia. Usually as I have observed this long in most puberphonia patients the duration depends on how fast you grasp the proper technique shown by speech therapist. The cost of treatment would vary from therapist to therapist.

Vocal Cord Lesions - Causes + Treatment

Vocal Cord Lesions - Causes + Treatment

When the vocal cords suffer from the accumulation of non-cancerous and abnormal growth, these are known as vocal cord lesions. These lesions usually cause a variety of voice and speech related problems. These are also known as singer’s nodules and nodes, which may be caused by pressure, stress and stretching of the vocal cords. Women between the age of 20 to 50 are more prone to this condition. Here is everything you need to know about the types, causes and treatment of these lesions.

Types: There are three kinds of vocal cord lesions, that is nodules, polyps and cysts. A vocal cord polyps may be caused on one side of the vocal cords and may also lead to many disturbances in one’s voice. Another type of vocal cord lesions includes a mass of tissue that may manifest in the sac or membranes around the vocal cord. This cyst can be on the surface of the vocal cord or in the ligaments of the vocal cord. This may require surgical removal as well as voice therapy thereafter. Nodules are the third type of lesion that may form in the vocal folds. These are basically calluses that may disappear once the pressure and overuse of the vocal cords diminish.

Causes: These lesions are usually benign or non-cancerous growths that may be caused due to a variety of reasons. Screaming and overuse of vocal cords are few of the most common reasons for the eruption of such lesions. The heavy use of one’s voice can cause quite a bit of trauma to the vocal cords and may lead to problems including lesions and disturbances in one’s voice. Conditions like reflux and allergic reactions may also cause vocal cord lesions as a side effect.

Symptoms: From hoarseness to pain, there are a number of symptoms caused by this condition. A low pitch and difficulty while speaking are also some of the common symptoms of this condition. Patients suffering from the growth of such lesions will also find themselves making an effort in order to speak normally and to be heard. Constant throat clearing may be required as well.

Treatment: Besides giving your voice a rest and gargling warm saline water with salt, one can also have the condition checked by the doctor so as to ascertain whether or not it is a serious lesion that may require surgical removal and voice therapy. The doctor will usually prescribe medicines in order to deal with any underlying conditions that may have caused the lesions, including allergic reactions, reflux, sinusitis and other such ailments. One will also have to  stop smoking so that there is less chemical pressure on the vocal cord. Finally, one will have to go through voice therapy for more serious lesions. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

I have a problem in speech from childhood. When I speak I struck at the few words which makes my speech difficult. But when I sing I doesn't struck. How to cure this problem.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS

Stammering can be made lesser only and only by Speech therapy. So you should take the help of a speech therapist. Also, I'd suggest you to visit a Psychologist as confidence plays a great role in dealing with this problem. I'd suggest you to speak very slowly, word by word. People may make fun of this but believe me, slowly you'll get better at it. Hope your query is answered. Feel free to ask if you have any doubts. Wishing you good health.

I am a 17 year old male. I have been stammering since 5-6 years. I am confused between hypnotherapy, psychotherapy speech therapy etc.

MPhil (Clinical Psychology)

Stammering has very many reasons behind. It falls under neuro-linguistic problems. Many a times its behavioural, due to anxiety or fear. Try breathing techniques, meet a psychiatrist who might treat you with medicines or will advise to meet a speech therapist. The basic cause need to be find out. You need a detailed evaluation. Psychotherapy should also help you with a clinical psychologist after proper psychometric analyses finding out the route cause of stammering. Take care.

Hello sir / madam from many days in am secreting saliva too much while speaking its just spraying a bit much how can ...
Many a times increased salivation can be due to the local irritants present on the teeth. Pls get ur teeth cleaned first. Then look for any spacing in ur front teeth, if possible get it filled or orthodontically treated. Chlorhexidine m/w also helps in some patients after scaling process to maintain oral hygiene. Pls let me know if u are relieved by the above mentioned ways.

I have voice problem I can't speak loudly what should I do to solve the problem to get a normal voice.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Breathe deeply and exhale on a hisssssssing sound. Repeat 10 times. Proper breathing is the foundation for a healthy voice AND control over nervous energy that can make the voice quiver. Say “Mm-mmm (as in yummy) Mmm-hmm (like yes) ” Repeat 5 times. This develops mask resonance, which creates a clean and vibrant sound by creating a clean approximation of the cords and a resonance that will sound great and project easily. Say “Mm-mmm. Mmm-hmm.” up and down your vocal range, from low to middle to high and back again, 10 times.

Dear lybrate-user if attach an audiogram report or mention the audiogram findings will give me clear idea about type of hearing loss whether it's treatable or not. If it's sensorineural hearing loss in which ear drum is normal but there is permanent loss of inner ear that is cochlea or auditory nerve is mostly not treated by medical or surgical treatment. Let me know if it helps. Thanks.

When I speak to people. They cannot hear my voice properly. They said me that you have bad sound. But in the past I was able to speak clearly but now what has happened with me. I have cough also. What should I do now?

Bachelor of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology (B.A.S.L.P)
Audiologist, Delhi
Go for voice evaluation by an audiologist, because there is something wrong with your vocal system i. E. Infection in larynx due to which you r suffering from dry cough and voice problem, which is unpleasant for listeners. So try to talk less, drink luke-warm water, avoid throat clearing, avoid tea, coffee, too much shouting etc. For voice conservation.
