Did You Know The Risk Of Stroke Is Higher In Young Pregnant Woman?

MS - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Fellowship in Fetal Medicine
Gynaecologist, Amritsar
Did You Know The Risk Of Stroke Is Higher In Young Pregnant Woman?

Older women usually face more complications when it comes to pregnancy when compared with younger women. There are other genetic and environmental factors apart from age which may also lead to a host of complications, in many cases. However, recent studies show that younger women are twice as likely to get strokes during pregnancy when compared with older women. Women between 16 to 35 years of age get more strokes during pregnancy than older women. This usually happens during and after the pregnancy, and there are many reasons for the same, many of which are still under research and medical examination.

While the reason for such strokes occurring is unknown, doctors suggest that pre-eclampsia is one of the reasons. It usually occurs because of high blood pressure during pregnancy. The third trimester or the post-partum stage is when the risk of these strokes increases. According to the latest study, the risk of stroke was two times higher in women between 16 and 24 years of age, whereas in women between 25 and 34, there was a 60% chance. In women above 35 years of age, the risk was comparatively minimal.

There are many kinds of complications that may occur during pregnancy if the pregnant lady is under stress or does not take care of her body in a proper manner. Pregnancy might boost the risk of strokes in younger women because of the following reasons:

  1. High blood pressure
  2. Diabetes
  3. Chances of blood clot formation increase during pregnancy are high. This is so that women do not bleed excessively while they deliver. Therefore, there is a major shift in blood flow during or right after delivery. This can cause a stroke. In younger women, this seems to be more common.
  4. More hormonal changes in younger women increase the chances of a stroke.
  5. Older women are healthier overall than younger women.
  6. Many of the younger women these days go through a number of hormonal problems like polycystic ovary disorder (PCOD) because of which they face a lot of complications and weakness.
  7. Hereditary weakness
  8. Lesser haemoglobin levels compared to older women
  9. Difference in the daily diet

Some of the stroke symptoms include weakness, dull face, weakness in the body, especially arms and legs, severe headaches and difficulty in speaking. Therefore, pregnant women and those around them need to understand the stroke signs and symptoms so that when required, they could take the necessary measures if required. Moreover, doctors should be aware of the fact that younger women are at a higher risk for strokes than older women, particularly if they have pre-eclampsia. They should, therefore, be watched more carefully, especially the weeks during and after they are supposed to give birth.

Myth-If I breast feed , I can't have a sex life.

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Agra
Fact - after delivery, you'll decide when it's time to have sex with your partner. The same hormone that helps to release your milk for the baby (oxytocin) is also made when you have sex. When having sex, you may leak a little breast milk. This is normal.
Moreover till your baby is totally dependent on breast milk, there is minimal chance to conceive again.

Know More About Infertility!

MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, DNB - Obstetrics & Gynecology

Know More About Infertility!

The term infertility in females explains a wide range of disorders but in order to simplify things, lets’ just say, infertility in women is a condition in which women are unable to conceive. There are numerous reasons that can be responsible for this situation and although some are preventable or curable, most others have no specific cure or treatment.

Ovulatory Disorders

One of the most common reasons for infertility is an ovulatory disorder. Almost 30 percent of female infertility is caused due to this reason. 70 percent of such infertility is treatable with drugs such as Reprones/Menogan and Clomiphene. Here is a list of causes of failed ovulation-

  1. Disruption in the complex hormonal balance.

  2. Ovaries fail to produce mature eggs. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is the most common disorder causing this problem. This syndrome has reduced FSH production and increased production of LH, Oestrogen and Testosterone. Suppressed FSH production may cause the partial development of ovarian follicles.

  3. Hypothalamus may malfunction thereby causing the pituitary to malfunction, thus losing control over the process or FSH and LH production.

  4. Physical damage to the ovaries by multiple surgeries or due to the formation of cysts.

  5. A rare case of premature menopause.

  6. Problems of the follicle.

  7. Poor functioning of fallopian tubes

Diseases or disorders in the tube have been another major reason of infertility in women. Almost 25 percent of women infertility occurs due to this reason. Although treatments exist, success rates of the treatments are as high as 30 percent. The causes of tube damage may be as follows-

  1. Infection caused by bacteria or viruses

  2. Abdominal diseases like colitis and appendicitis

  3. Previous pelvic or abdominal surgeries.

  4. A condition called ectopic pregnancy which occurs in the tube, and even if very carefully but successfully overcome, may leave permanent damage.

  5. Rare congenital defects in which women may be born with tube anomalies.

This is the condition where the endometrium expands excessively thereby preventing individuals from getting pregnant. This affects almost 10 percent of the population of infertile women. Almost 40 percent of women with endometriosis are infertile.

Other Factors

Other additional factors may include:

  1. Abnormal uterus

  2. Congenital diseases

  3. Behavioural factors like personal habits, lifestyle and health factors.

  4. Exercise and diet- extremely overweight or underweight women may have problems in conceiving.

  5. Cigarette smoking reduces the chances of conceiving by one-third.

  6. Alcohol increases the chances of birth defects.

Hence, pregnancy is tougher than it might really seem.

Why Do Gums Bleed While Brushing Teeth?

MD-Internal Medicine , MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
Why Do Gums Bleed While Brushing Teeth?

Did you notice blood from your gums in the morning while brushing or flossing? There are plenty of reasons behind bleeding gums. Some may be temporary while some may be severe. Here are some reasons which may be responsible for the bleeding of your gums.

  1. GingivitisGingivitis is the first and most initial stage of infection in the gums. A small amount of plaque and poor hygiene results in this condition which often leads to bleeding gums especially when you brush your teeth. But since this is the initial stage, brushing your teeth twice a day and maintain proper oral hygiene will cure the bleeding gums.
  2. Plaque: When plaque build-up on your gums becomes too much, it makes the gums come out from the teeth, and a gap develops thus causing bleeding. In the pockets that are formed between the gums and teeth, germs start accumulating. These germs start attacking the teeth and gums. When more and more germs accumulate, the bleeding also increases. With time this plaque become hard. The hardened plaque is called tartar. This stage is actually the second stage of gingivitis and is called the periodontitis.
  3. Medication: People who take medication for blood thinning usually experience bleeding gum problems. But you must be thinking how medicines can lead to bleeding gums? But the thing is that these medicines stop the blood from clotting and thus bleeding becomes much easier. If you face such a condition, pay a visit to your doctor and tell him about your medications.
  4. Change in Flossing Routine: A change in the regular flossing routine can also cause lead to bleeding gums. This has been reported in many patients. Suppose you haven’t flossed you teeth in the past few days or week and then you suddenly start your routine all over again then you are bound to have bleeding gums because your gums were habituated to a certain routine which you changed abruptly. The same condition will arise if you suddenly start flossing more times a day than you used to. Nothing unusual is good for your teeth. You should always be on a constant and regular flossing routine. However, bleeding due to flossing won’t continue forever.
  5. Change in Toothbrush: A change in your toothbrush may also lead to bleeding of gums. This happens because when you use a toothbrush for a considerable period, it becomes soft, but when you start using the new one, it is usually harder than the old one. This causes the gums to bleed. So always use a soft toothbrush, and if you are not so confident about the type of toothbrush you should use, talk to your dentist about it.
  6. PregnancyA type of gingivitis results at the time of pregnancy. Women experience bleeding from their gums and the gums swell considerably which happens mostly due to hormonal changes.

You should never give any unnecessary pressure on your gums and maintain a proper oral hygiene.

Debunking Top 3 Myths About Homeopathy

Homeopath, Delhi
Debunking Top 3 Myths About Homeopathy

Homeopathy is one of the most successful alternative systems of medicine, which has gained prominence with time. Homeopathy has always been associated with various controversies, but has emerged successfully due to its principles and scientifically proven products.

In spite of its success over the years, many people still abstain from using homeopathic medicines for healing purposes. Here are some myths about homeopathy nullified:

  1. Homeopathic medicines are slow to act: This is one of the most important myths which abstain people from using homeopathic treatment. Homeopathic medicines are selected on the basis of the characteristics of the signs and symptoms and not just on the basis of diagnosis of a certain case. In homeopathy, an exact match needs to be done between the medical symptoms and symptoms of the disease. In case the symptoms do not match, the effect of the medicine becomes slow. The mismatch occurs due to the homeopaths mistake, and it is not a mistake of homeopathy. When the medical symptoms and disease symptoms match, homeopathic medicines work effectively and fast.
  2. Some homeopaths do not disclose the name of the medicines they give: This is another major myth about homeopathic medicines. Homeopaths do not hide the names of medicines they give you, and if you are educated enough to understand the depth of homeopathy, you should know that there is nothing like homeopaths hiding the names of medicines theyre giving you. Homeopathy differs and unlike modern medicines, its remedy differs from person to person. For example, for two people suffering from common cold, the remedy may not be the same. If you get to know about a homeopathic medicine, which has cured cold in a friend and use it on yourself abruptly, you may have side effects or no effects at all. Even in one particular patient, the symptoms may vary every time he gets a similar cold, and the medicines also have to be changed. You must always consult a homeopath before using a homeopathic medicine on your own.
  3. While having homeopathic treatment, the patient's symptoms get aggravated: Homeopathic medicines are given when the medical and disease symptoms match. Thus, during the initial period of a homeopathic treatment, a little aggravation of the symptoms indicates that the medicines have started acting. This is a good sign and also denotes that the right medicine has been selected. This aggravation does not continue for long and after a short period, the patient experiences great relief. In many cases, the patients do not experience such early aggravation or symptoms. Extreme aggravation sometimes denotes improper medicine selection.

Homeopathy is a trusted and the most natural medicine that exists. There are certain myths about homeopathy, which are wrong and need to be cleared, so that more people can resort to homeopathy. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a homeopath.
