Food ahbits are common weithmanychildren. It maychange as he grows and you can lvoivngly make him understand while taking care not to scold or censure him. Potty can be due to lack of fibre in diet and due to less water intake try giving lots of vegetable and fruits, but hypothyroidism in children can also give constipation. Please check his cbc, tsh and inform me directly so that I will not miss it in general questions pool.

Shyness is a personality character and is not necessarily a disease. Some are born shy, some are born extroverted, some are aggressive, some are calm. There is really no cure of shyness. But with time, things improve. You can try and cut his tv time and forcibly send him down to play. You can enroll him in classes which need him to interact with the teacher and others. And you just need for him to grow up and reach his own potential.

What Causes Early Childhood Trauma? + How to Identify this Condition?

What Causes Early Childhood Trauma? + How to Identify this Condition?

The problem of early childhood trauma refers to disturbing experiences that take place in children during 0-6 years of age. The traumas that young children experience can be the effects of natural disaster, war or accidents or that of intentional violence like sexual abuse, domestic violence or physical abuse.

What Does this Condition Impact Childhood?

Traumatic events have a significant impact on your child's life and can break his sense of safety. The problem has been linked with a decrease in the size of the brain cortex. This is the part of the brain that controls several complex functions like thinking, consciousness, memory, attention, awareness, and language. The changes that occur as a result can affect your child's IQ as well as his or her ability to control emotions. As a consequence, he or she may harbor feelings of danger and become more afraid or it may manifest in other personality issues which are not very obvious.

How do you identify this condition?

Generally, children who suffer from traumas face problems in regulating their emotions and behaviors.

They may display signs like:

- Fear of new situations
- Being clingy to their parent(s) or somebody close
- Become easily frightened
- Display aggressive and/or impulsive behavior
- Are difficult to comfort
- Display deterioration in behavior and functioning
- Easily forget newly attained developmental skills
- Difficulty in sleeping

Depending on the age during which your child may go through a traumatic event, he or she can exhibit signs relevant to his or her age.

For instance:

Children aged 0-2 years may also display reactions like poor verbal skills, memory problems, excessive temper, experience nightmares, etc.

On the other hand, children aged 3-6 years can face difficulties in learning as well as develop poor skill and learning disabilities, face problems in social interaction, may be unable to trust people and so on.

If this condition remains unattended or unresolved for longer, it may create personality issues and can deeply impact the individual's relationships, or equations in the society, as they grow up and even after they become adults. In fact, many behavioral problems can be traced back to childhood trauma.

You can't think of no milk at that age. First of all you remove the thought of not having milk from your mind you must sit comfortably and suckle the baby. No drug will help to improve milk although there are galactogogues in the market. Drink lot of water and have good food.

The average weight of a 3 month old female child is 4.6 to 7.4 kg. Now if we go by your calculations, it comess out to be 2.9+2.7=5.6kg. So your child I slightly underweight-----------------------------------

Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux In Babies

Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux In Babies

Which baby doesn't spit up their food! This is usually not a reason to worry, but if this spitting up is chronic and is accompanied by other symptoms it is known as Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. Severe GERD can cause weight loss and breathing problems and thus, should not be ignored.

Reflux occurs when food is pushed out of the stomach and back up the esophagus. This is usually because the digestive system in babies is not yet fully developed. Vomiting often during the day is one of the most common symptoms of GERD. Other symptoms include:

  • A persistent cough
  • Choking or gagging while eating
  • Refusing to eat
  • Crying while feeding
  • Heartburn
  • Pain in the stomach

Most cases of GERD can be diagnosed by its symptoms and a look at the baby's medical history. In some cases, additional tests may be required, such as:

  1. Barium swallow: The child is given a chalky substance to drink. This highlights the esophagus, stomach and upper part of the small intestines in a special X-ray. It is used to check if there are any blockages in the digestive system.
  2. pH probe: A long, thin tube with a probe at one end is put down the child's throat. This is kept in the esophagus for 24 hours. The probe measures the levels of acidity in the stomach. This test is usually done when the child complains of breathing problems along with reflux.
  3. Upper GI endoscopy: Here the doctor puts a thin, flexible tube down the child's throat. At one end of the tube is a camera that allows the doctor to look into the esophagus, stomach and small intestine.
  4. Gastric emptying study: One of the causes of reflux is the slow emptying of the stomach. To check this, the doctor will mix a radioactive chemical with the baby's milk that allows a special camera to follow its path down the digestive system.

In most cases, GERD can be treated by making a few lifestyle changes. Some of these are:

  • Raise the head of the baby's crib
  • After feeding the baby, do not let him lie down, but hold him upright for half an hour or so.
  • Change his feeding schedule
  • Ask your doctor if you can try giving him solid food. Else, check if you can thicken his feed with cereal.
  • Make the baby burp after feeding

Most infants outgrow this condition within a year, so do not stress yourself and enjoy life with your baby.

My kids having cough problem their lungs get filled with congestion. .in that case what to do.

MD - Paediatrics

My kids having cough problem their lungs get filled with congestion. .in that case what to do.
Most coughs and colds are caused by germs called viruses. Many different viruses can infect the nose and throat. They are passed on by coughing and sneezing the virus into the air. An average preschool and primary school child has 3-8 coughs or colds per year. Sometimes several coughs or colds occur one after the other. The common symptoms are a cough and a runny nose. The cough is often worse at night. Coughing does not damage the lungs. In addition, a child may have a raised temperature (fever), a sore throat, headache, tiredness, and be off their food. Sometimes children may be sick (vomit) after a bout of coughing. A build-up of mucus behind the eardrums may cause dulled hearing or mild earache. There is no magic cure! typically, symptoms are worse in the first 2-3 days, and then ease over the next few days as the immune system clears the virus. An irritating cough may linger for up to 2-4 weeks after other symptoms have gone. Antibiotics do not kill viruses, so are of no use for common coughs and colds. Coughs and colds often do not need any treatment. Make sure your child has enough to drink. Low body fluid (dehydration) may develop if a child has a raised temperature (fever) and does not drink much. Treatment aims to ease symptoms. Paracetamol can ease aches and pains, headaches, and fever. Ibuprofen is an alternative. Both are sold in pharmacies in liquid form for children. There are various brands - ask the pharmacist if you are unsure what is suitable. A popular treatment for a blocked nose in a baby is to put a few drops of salt water (saline) into the nose just before feeds. Some people feel that this helps to clear the nose to make feeding easier. There is little scientific evidence as to how well this works, but it may be worth a try if feeding is difficult. You can buy saline drops from pharmacies. Vapour rubs are another popular treatment. They can be applied to the chest and back (avoid application to the nostril area in small children, for safety reasons). Again, there is little scientific evidence as to how well they work. Inhaling steam can also help relieve congestion and coughing. The safest way to do this with children is to sit in the bathroom with a hot shower/hot taps running. Sucking menthol sweets can help ease sore throats in older children.

My daughter is 13.5 years old she has very poor appetite. She does not eat anything in morning (says will vomit or having vomiting feeling ), basically we have seen its more of anxiety of going to school that she avoids eating .on weekends she does not complain of vomiting but no eating. Her weight gain and height gain last 5-10 years is below lowest curve. Worried of both, suggest anything for hunger and height.

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), F.I.A.M.S. (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Muzaffarnagar
You have rightly said that it is all due to anxiety for going to school. It is easy to over come this problem by awaking her in the morning earlier by 15-20 minutes so that she can take her breakfast easily. There is no medicine which can change this habit. Increase frequency of her diet in stead of increasing quantity of diet which shall be helpful in gaining growth.
