Physiotherapy for Back Pain

MPT - Orthopedic Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy for Back Pain

Most of us suffer from lower back pain at some point in our lives; be it from a sedentary lifestyle, spending hours at the office desk or from strenuous physical exercises. In most cases, a little bit of rest does the trick. However, if the lower back pain persists for 3-6 weeks, physiotherapy is recommended.

How does physiotherapy help?

The main purpose behind physiotherapy is reducing lower back pain and increasing muscle and bone function, so that such instances are avoided in the future. Physiotherapy is the first line of defence against lower back pain. More drastic measures such as surgery are undertaken once physiotherapy fails to do is job.

Physiotherapy is often recommended when the back pain is caused due to lifestyle factors, a minor injury like a fall or other moderate factors. For more severe back injuries, doctors recommend surgery straight away when there is no scope of performing physiotherapy.

Low-intensity back pain can be cured using a combination of heat packs, ultrasound wave therapy and Iontophoresis (using a localized current source to introduce medical ionic compounds to the body).

A physical therapy program for back pain usually has two components:

  1. Passive physical therapy to help reduce the patient's pain to a more manageable level

  2. Active exercises

Passive Physical Therapy - Modalities

The physical therapist may focus on decreasing pain with passive physical therapy (modalities). These therapies are considered passive because they are done to the patient. Examples include:

  1. Heat/ice packs

  2. TENS units

  3. Iontophoresis

  4. Ultrasound

Active Physical Therapy - Back Pain Exercises

In addition to passive therapies, active physical therapy (exercise) is also necessary to rehabilitate the spine. Here are some of the common exercises for back pain:

  1. Back Stretch: Put your hands underneath your head while lying back. Bend your knees but put your feet on the ground. Roll your legs to one side and hold them there for 10 seconds. Repeat three times for each side.

  2. Deep Lunge: For this, you need to kneel on one knee with the other foot pointed towards the front. Lift the back knee up and hold it there for five seconds and then bring it down. Repeat this exercise three times for each side.

  3. One Leg Stand: This is the simplest of exercises. Hold on to a wall for support while standing and face towards it. Then slowly hold one leg and bend it behind you. Hold in the same position for five seconds before bringing it down. Repeat the process three times for each leg in five second gaps.

If it is because of lying continuously, then these are bed sores. It's essential to keep wounds clean to prevent infection. If the affected skin is not broke, gently wash it with water and mild soap and pat dry. Apply antibiotic powder or cream. Avoid pressure on blisters. Have healthy diet. If it is open wound, take surgeons opinion. May require oral antibiotics. Hope this answer helped you.

Spring beds, folding beds or thick matress are harmful Do hot fomantation. Paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab od x10. Do neck, back & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. You will need other supportive medicines also. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. Ruling out of anemia also important in your case. However, your symptoms are not directly related to anemia but in your age groups gals its a common problem and presents with similar non specific problems. Let me know how is your appetite and periods (means is there excess bleeding?). Get done with blood hemoglobin investigation to diagnose anemia.

Hello, I understand your concern. Neck stiffness, shoulder stiffness, neck pain these are all due to cervical spondylosis. This is a age related disorder common in old age. For this problem I suggest you to consult a physiotherapist who will teach you some exercises which will help you to reduce the stiffness of neck and shoulder. Additionally, you can take tab. Zerodol-mr 1 tab whenever needed. Osteoarthritis is again a different problem to deal with. As it is a degenerative diaease of joint it is difficult to treat with medication. I really appreciate what you are doing, i. E, weight loss, playing volleyball, working field. All these help you to reduce pain. Additionally, you can try some stretching exercise of joints. Ex. Yoga. Tha tablet which I have mentioned above will also help you to reduce the pain from osteoarthritis. Constipation and gastric problem: try to increase fibre content in your food. Add green leafy vegetables. Drink plenty of water. Drink luke warm water as soon as you get up. This will stimulate the gut. Try to develop a habit og going to toilet at the same time daily. This will help your body to get adjust to that time. For gastric problem, you might be already taking some medication. Additionally, avoid tea coffee, spicy food. Take care. If you need any further information you can always contact me through lybrate.

I can't afford to stop running and need a permanent resolution. Please help!

Get up close & personal with your inner thigh Don’t foam roll your ITB Get off your butt & stretch it Hips don’t lie – make them stronger! Stretch your hip flexors Surprise – a bonus tip…. Denial is not a place you want to spend – or waste – your time. Trying to ‘run through it’ will not work. Taking a few days off running to rest it generally doesn’t work either. Unfortunately ITB pain has the potential to be a long term problem if you don’t get on the front foot and take action at the first sign of a problem. Of course, it should go without saying that taking these actions on a weekly basis even BEFORE the first sign of a problem is the best plan of attack!
