What is the best ointment for Sun burns. And what are the symptoms of schizophrenia?

Masters in Clinical Psychology & Certified Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Practioner, Certified Neuro linguistic programming Practioner, Masters in Clinical Psychology, Post Graduate Diploma in Child and ADolescent Counselling
Psychologist, Pune
Schizophrenia changes how you think, feel, and act. Its symptoms will be different for everyone who gets the disease. The symptoms can come and go, too. No one will have all of them all of the time. In general, there are three kinds: •Positive (things that start to happen) •Negative (things that stop happening) •Cognitive (related to processing information) They usually start between ages 16 and 30. Men often get them earlier than women. When the disease is in full swing and symptoms are severe, the person with schizophrenia can't tell what's real and what's not. This happens less often as they get older. People with the condition usually aren't aware that they have it until a doctor or counselor tells them. They won't even realize that something is seriously wrong. If they do happen to notice symptoms, like not being able to think straight, they might chalk it up to things like stress or being tired. If you're concerned that you or someone you know is showing signs of schizophrenia, talk to a doctor or counselor. Positive Symptoms The changes you see are" add-ons" to normal behavior. The person starts thinking or doing things they didn't think or do before. Hallucinations. They might hear, see, smell, or feel things no one else does. Most often they'll hear voices inside their heads. These might tell them what to do, warn them of danger, or say mean things to them. The voices might talk to each other. Delusions. These are beliefs that seem strange to most people and are easy to prove wrong. The person affected might think someone is trying to control their brains through their TVs or that the FBI is out to get them. They might believe they're someone else, like a famous actor or the president, or that they have superpowers. Confused thoughts and speech. People with schizophrenia can have a hard time organizing their thoughts. They might not be able to follow along when you talk to them. Instead, it might seem like they're zoning out or distracted. When they talk, their words can come out all jumbled and not make sense. They can also have trouble concentrating. For example, they might lose track of what's going on in a TV show as they're watching. Different movements. Someone with the condition can seem jumpy. Sometimes they'll make the same movements over and over again. But sometimes they might be perfectly still for hours at a stretch, which is called being catatonic. Contrary to popular belief, people with the disease usually aren't violent. Negative Symptoms You'll see changes because the person loses the interest in and ability to do things. These symptoms can be hard to spot, especially in teenagers, because it's normal for them to have big emotional swings between highs and lows. Depression has some of the same symptoms, too. Emotionless. A person with schizophrenia might seem like they have a terrible case of the blahs. They might not talk much or show any feelings. And when they talk, their voice can sound flat, like they have no emotions. Doctors call this a" flat affect. Withdrawal. Someone who has the condition might stop making plans with you or become a hermit. Talking with them can feel like pulling teeth: If you want an answer, you have to really work to pry it out of them. Struggling with the basics of daily life. They may stop bathing or taking care of themselves. No follow-through. People with schizophrenia have trouble staying on schedule or finishing what they start. Sometimes they can't get started at all. Cognitive Symptoms Cognition has to do with how good your brain is at learning, sorting, and using information. Someone with schizophrenia might have a hard time with their working memory. For example, they may not be able to keep track of different kinds of facts at the same time, like a phone number plus instructions. Along with having trouble paying attention, it can be hard for them to organize their thoughts and make decisions.

I have a bad habit of smoking. You please help me to gave me outside from this habit.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You have to quit cold turkey because the body and mind will torture you endlessly while attempting a reduction in smoking. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged on. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but do go for a thorough medical check-up to assess the effects of your abuse. Regarding improving your lungs, do a lot of aerobic exercise breathing through your nostrils only. Then there are a lot of deep breathing exercises in Yoga which you can learn too. Deep breathing cleanses your system and lungs and restores it to good health. Deep breathing uses the 80% of the lungs which are not normally used in normal breathing and even when exerting yourself. The greatest effect is in the lungs because this substance is processed through the respiratory system directly through the lung surface. When quitting, you must take one day at a time; though you must give up all smoking at once, and promptly. If you look too far ahead you will get discouraged and will give up. If you sit and count the number of days you have given up, that will also focus too much on achievement. You must focus on the here and now, on that day to be precise. After all quitting is not that easy due to many factors. So even if you fail one day, you must try and try again. Very few people succeed in their first attempt. Your persistence will eventually pay off. The urge to discontinue is hampered by many factors but the worst of them is the conditioning. In fact, these conditions can exist all through the day, unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing the habit. The information is really scary but true and you must remind yourself about this every day. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heartbeat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact, it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chew gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i. E. At least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

M pregnant n my hubby smokes a lot. When he comes closer to me after smoking there is suffocating & irritating feeling I doesn't feel like he come closer to me. He says he has lessened to smoking than compared to previous days but he isn't unable to quit smoking. What are the ways to quit smoking n live a healthy life?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Only by using strong will power and avoiding all situations where you feel like smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking or using drugs/ weed, avoiding friends who smoke and diverting mind by reading or chewing a gum, like NICORETTE and taking a walk when you crave for a smoke can all help. You can chew Nicorette gum which is nicotine replacement. There are medicines available. Which can be prescribed if asked personally Cigarette smoking is a leading preventable cause of mortality. It kills more than 60 lakh people worldwide every year. More than 50% of regular smokers would invariably die from tobacco-related illnesses which includes heart attack, cancer or asthmatic lung diseases. Best age to stop smoking is before 40.

It's not easy to say exactly what causes depression and anxiety – it's different for everyone. Sometimes a difficult time in you or your mates' life can set off depression or anxiety, sometimes it's caused by a combination of things that has built up over time and sometimes, there's just no obvious cause at all. Some risk factors for men developing depression or anxiety include: •Physical health problems •Relationship problems •Employment problems •Social isolation •Significant change in living arrangements (e.g. Separation or divorce) •Pregnancy and birth of a baby •Drug and alcohol use. Symptoms of depression in women include: •Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood. •Loss of interest or pleasure in activities, including sex. •Restlessness, irritability, or excessive crying. •Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness, hopelessness, pessimism. •Sleeping too much or too little, early-morning awakening. Depression in women differs from depression in men in several ways: •Depression in women may occur earlier, last longer, be more likely to reoccur, be more likely to be associated with stressful life events, and be more sensitive to seasonal changes •Women are more likely to experience guilty feelings and attempt suicide, although they actually commit suicide less often than men •Depression in women is more likely to be associated with anxiety disorders, especially panic and phobic symptoms, and eating disorders •Depressed women are less likely to abuse alcohol and other drugs •Symptoms of depression in MEN include: •Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood. •Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism. •Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness. •Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex. •Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down" Depression is a serious but treatable medical condition that can strike anyone regardless of age, ethnic background, socioeconomic status, or gender. However, depression may go unrecognized by those who have it, their families and friends, and even their physicians. Men, in particular, may be unlikely to admit to depressive symptoms and seek help. But depression in men is not uncommon: Symptoms of depression include: •Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood •Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism •Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness •Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex •Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down" •Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions •Trouble sleeping, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping •Appetite and/or weight change •Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts •Restlessness, irritability •Persistent physical symptoms, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain, which do not respond to routine treatment Depression facts •A depressive disorder is a mood disorder that is characterized by a sad, blue mood that goes above and beyond normal sadness or grief. •A depressive disorder is a syndrome, meaning a group of symptoms. •Depressive disorders are feature not only negative thoughts, moods, and behaviors but also specific changes in bodily functions (like, eating, sleeping, energy and sexual activity). •One in 10 people will have a depression in their lifetime. •Because depression can lead to self-harm including suicide, it is important to note that one of every 25 suicide attempts results in death. •Some types of depression, especially bipolar depression, run in families. •While there are many social, psychological, and environmental risk factors for developing depression, some are particularly prevalent in one gender or the other, or in particular age or ethnic groups. •There can be some differences in symptoms of depression depending on age, gender, and ethnicity. •Depression is only diagnosed clinically in that there is no laboratory test or X-ray for depression. It is therefore crucial to see a health professional as soon as you notice symptoms of depression in yourself, your friends, or family. •The first step in getting appropriate treatment is a complete physical and psychological evaluation to determine whether the person, in fact, has a depressive disorder. •Depression is not a weakness but a serious illness with biological, psychological, and social aspects to its cause, symptoms, and treatment. A person cannot will it away. Untreated or undertreated, it can worsen or return. •There are many safe and effective medications, particularly the SSRIs, that can be of great help in the treatment of depression. Treatment- A variety of treatments, including medications and short-term psychotherapies (i.e. "talking" therapies), have proven effective for depressive disorders: more than 80 percent of people with a depressive illness improve with appropriate treatment. Not only can treatment lessen the severity of depression, but it may also reduce the duration of the episode and may help prevent additional bouts of depression. If you want more clarifications please ask me directly and not in open questions session 5 Ways to Fight Depression If you feel depressed, it's best to do something about it — depression doesn't just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor or therapist, here are 5 things you can do to feel better. 1.Exercise. Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk every day — or dance, jog, or bike if you prefer. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active. In addition to getting aerobic exercise, some yoga poses can help relieve feelings of depression. Two other aspects of yoga — breathing exercises and meditation — can also help people with depression feel better. 2.Nurture yourself with good nutrition. Depression can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat. Proper nutrition can influence a person's mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don't feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going). 3.Identify troubles, but don't dwell on them. Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what's got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. 4. Express yourself. With depression, a person's creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked. Exercise your imagination (painting, drawing, doodling, sewing, writing, dancing, composing music, etc.) and you not only get those creative juices flowing, you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself. Find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps. Laughter helps lighten your mood. 5.Try to notice good things. Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings. Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal. If you are happy with these answers please click on "useful” link so that I can know my efforts are not wasted. If you want more clarifications please ask me directly and not in open questions.

Hello, I can understand your pain at losing one very important person in life. You probably had hopes of spending long time with her and had plans for the future and now nothing is going to happen. All these thoughts might be causing you sadness, disappointment and some anxiety and anger on the other hand. While it's important to be an important part of someone else's life, yet it's also important to know when to call it off if it's not working anymore. 1. At this age it is common for boys and girls to get attracted to each other and spent some time together. But equally common is breakups when one or both see that their needs are too different now and the other person will not fit the requirements any more. While this process is very heart breaking, but it is also important so that you can meet different people and see who is your kind of person and who will help you in the next phase of life ie. Job, marriage children. 2. By going through different relationships you will also understand yourself better and discover many hidden qualities and weaknesses in you. It's your growing edge to work through your weaknesses and sharpen your qualities. You will also discover your passion, dreams and hobbies and interests. 3. I suggest that you look at this breakup as a learning lesson and an opportunity to improve on any thing that was your mistake and assess your life choices again. What was meant to go will go. Let it go and you carry on with your journey. 4. Being flexible and independant in relationships is important. There will be times when you might not have any body's support or company. That is the time to learn to be your own friend and give yourself that love which you want from a close friend. This is healthy self love and very important for self confidence and high self esteem. 5. Indulge yourself with meeting new people, going places, discovering your passion, hobbies etc. Spend time alone with yourself to nurture the person within you.

I have lot of pressure from home front. My wife's habit to follow all types of religious stuffs i.E. Vast, astrology, normal baba, ramdev baba. 24 hrs we use to have same discussion on rahu, ketu shukr man gal. I have no intention to stop her but there has to be limit for all these things. When there is no positive responses on discussion on these topics from my side the chapter from Mahabharat starts at home. Really fed up.

Hypnotherapist, DCS, BSIC, Advanced Trainee of Transactional Analysis, Advanced Skills in Counselling
Psychologist,
If you don't respond positively, then how do you respond to her? She can pursue any interest of her choice. And so can you. You just need to talk to her assertively that her hobby is not something that you understand, so cannot participate in discussions. Find some legitimate excuse to move out of that situation, but don't forget to show and tell her that she's still a likeable person and you enjoy her company. Offer other activities that you both can do together. In Mahabharata, 2 people are needed to fight. If you don't fight then she will have to back of. Remember Gandhiji and talk sweetly and firmly with your wife. Soon she will leave you to do your own things in peace. Take care.

Low energy level and sleepiness maybe a result of low motivation or lack of interest in what you are doing. Another reason can be too sedantary lifestyle. Lack of exercise may lead to lethargy. Forgetfulness is also due to lack of interest and/or disorganised work style. Get some exercise. Drink lots of water. Avoid junk food and fried food. Prepare your'to do' list, first thing in the morning. Set timeframes for the tasks. Take a short break when you feel sleepy, in which you should have a glass of water, stretch a bit and then get back to work.
