That can happen once in a while. I hope you have not stopped medicines abruptly or consumed alcohol. If it still persists, an increase in dose of your medicines will be needed.

What are the side effects of cigarette and how can we stop smoking it how can we leave it.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), Masters in psychology counselling
Psychologist, Hyderabad
Dear Lybrate-user, it is good that you wants to stop smoking, we are destroying our health by smoking normal human takes oxygen into lungs 12 -15 times per minute (12 - 15 breaths) Lungs mixes oxygen in our blood and it purifies our blood, by smoking we are mixing not only oxygen adding and mixing bad elements like Nicotine etc. In Oxygen, that spoils our blood and our body organs like Lungs, Heart, kidney etc… How to quit: By willingness and willpower" where there is a will there is a way" Reduce one by one day by day.

Hi lybrate-user, you are suffering from stamerring and wanted to overcome this problem. Firstly, you have done a good job for coming forward to tell your problem. Stammering is not a big problem unless otherwise no physiological cause is present. It is only 6 months old problem definitely, we can solve it, medication is not necessary. But can you tell, how you feel when you take medicine for this problem. I want you to consult speech specialist or ENT specialist and let me know the result or status of your problem and then we could get clear idea of what exactly and then, start the treatment for you. Do not worry, there are many ways to overcome this problem. Take care.

Stress management is all about taking charge: of your lifestyle, thoughts, emotions, and the way you deal with problems. No matter how stressful your life seems, there are steps you can take to relieve the pressure and regain control. First of all. Think about 1. What caused your stress (make a guess if you’re unsure) 2. How you felt, both physically and emotionally 3. How you acted in response 4. What you did to make yourself feel better Here you have not mentioned anything in detail. So initially you may try some relaxation techniques Relax. You deserve it, it's good for you, and it takes less time than you think. Here comes some relaxation techniques. Try them 1. Meditation: A few minutes of practice per day can help ease. “Research suggests that daily meditation may alter the brain’s neural pathways, making you more resilient to stress,”  It's simple. Sit up straight with both feet on the floor. Close your eyes. Focus your attention on reciting -- out loud or silently -- a positive mantra such as “I feel at peace” or “I love myself.” Place one hand on your belly to sync the mantra with your breaths. Let any distracting thoughts float by like clouds. 2. Breathe Deeply Take a 5-minute break and focus on your breathing. Sit up straight, eyes closed, with a hand on your belly. Slowly inhale through your nose, feeling the breath start in your abdomen and work its way to the top of your head. Reverse the process as you exhale through your mouth. 3. Reach Out Your social network is one of your best tools for handling stress. Talk to others -- preferably face to face, or at least on the phone. Share what's going on. You can get a fresh perspective while keeping your connection strong. There are many more techniques. Try this first and observe whether there is a change.

HELLO mam & sir. I'm a sensitive person and I have a depression problem from 1 year. And I'm very worried for that. P...
When our mind is hooked to others thoughts and feelings towards us it is normal to have negative thoughts and in turn feeling low. The good news is that our mind could be wired to switch back to positive things and resilience building. We have immense potential within us and we could tap into those one step at a time, one day at a time. When things does not happen as we wish or people do not behave as we expect that is when out of disappointment, frustration, loneliness, anger, sadness. Etc we react and our mind starts thinking negative thoughts. Changing this pattern of responding to stressful situation requires both persistence and patience. Also you will only be able to work on this out of love and kindness towards you. Strong motivation will go a long way. Writing a statement about how would you want to respond in a similar situation and how will your life and your happiness will change if you do learn to manage your stress and how to respond to it. Once that is clear. Try following things to learn relaxation response which leads to better coping mechanism on a daily basis. To begin with doing guided progressive muscular relaxation before sleeping will help you relax. I would also suggest you to take a multiple small break to take 3 nice and deep breath while keeping your eyes closed. You could do this while sitting or standing or while even walking or climbing stairs (keep your eyes open in that case). When you take a nice and deep breaths there is actual physiological change in your body. This will help you to activate parasympathetic nervous system which promotes relaxation and helps you calm down and think more clearly. This will also actually improve your performance in your work. Along with this exercise is one of the best way to relive stress and stay fit. Engage in any kind of physical activity at least 4 times a week. This also helps in stress reduction. Along with this some relaxation exercises as well as engaging in joyful activities such as music, singing, dancing, reading, being in nature, gardening, talking with friends or anything which you enjoy will help reducing stress and rejuvenation of your mind and body. Have good routine for sleep and eating. Lot of research has now proven that sugar is very harmful for our health. Reduce sugar and refined white floor in your diet as much as you could. Along with this also increase consumption of raw vegetables in the form of salad in both the meals of your day.

All About Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
All About Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

An event or an accident that leaves us overwhelmed can lead to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, also known as PTSD. A particularly stressful situation or event that has created terror or been overly dramatic or dangerous can lead to stress and anxiety long after the individual has physically come out of the situation. This kind of a traumatic condition is usually what characterises PTSD. This condition is something that is persistent, and can linger on for a long time, calling for medical supervision and care. Here's a list of things you need to know about PTSD.

  • Duration: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder usually lasts up to six months. Yet, there are cases where it lingers on and requires treatment for some particular types of symptoms or behavioural changes. Usually, the patient's behaviour is a result of one or more of the symptoms discussed below.
  • Re-experiencing Symptoms: These symptoms include flashbacks and life like re-imagination in the form of dreams and nightmares. In many cases, the patient may remember and re-experience the entire scene or series of events that have led to the trauma in the first place. This can be triggered by a memory or association with words, events and other such things that have to do with the memory of the traumatic episode.
  • Avoidance Symptoms: A traumatised patient may go out of his or her way to avoid things that are remotely close to the traumatic incident. They may fear a reoccurrence or a reminder of the event and may avoid addressing the trauma altogether. Patients suffering from this symptom may have created a mental block, and may not be able to remember the exact details of the event. They may also feel emotions like fear, guilt, depression and even worry, over the past incident which led to the trauma in the first place.
  • Arousal Symptoms: Arousal or reactivity symptoms may trigger the same reactions that the person showed during the traumatic experience. These may include being on edge constantly in anticipation of a reoccurrence, or even getting startled by the slightest thing since the mind is already occupied with thoughts of the event, constantly. Anger and emotional outbursts may also be caused due to these symptoms.
  • Mood Symptoms: Mood swings are the most common outcome of these symptoms. The patient may experience a complete lack of enthusiasm and drive to indulge in activities like hobbies and socialising. Also, the patient may end up harbouring feelings of negativity towards family, friends and strangers, besides going through phases of guilt and self blame for the occurrence of the traumatic event.

PTSD can be a debilitating disorder in the emotional sense, and should be treated by a psychiatrist in case it lingers on for more than six months.

I am 50 years old having depression for the last two months. Is this has caused problem in arousing during sex. Please suggest me what should I take. Thanks!

Psychologist,
Depression, stress and anxiety has a direct affect on sexual arousal and performance. A psychiatrist can suggest you the medication for dealing with depression. Besides medication, thought management is an important aspect which is very useful to manage and cope with depression. When your depression reduces and the stress levels come down, you will see an up in your sexual arousal too. Some key guidelines: do exercise, as it releases the same chemicals like dopamine and serotonin which a psychiatrist will give you for depression. Exercising is a natural way to keep depression at bay. 2. Eat healthy: stay away from junk, sweets, maida, fried foods. Eat whole grains, complex carbs, food supplying fatty acids, greens and fruits. 3. Sleep well for 7-8 hours everyday: this detoxifies and rejuvenates the mind and body naturally and reduces stress, tension and worry. 4. Stop thinking too much and worrying: there are something's that are within your control to change and improve. There are some things that you cannot change because they are outside your control for eg weather. Learn to differentiate these things and focus your attention on what you can change positively. Also, treat life with less seriousness. Add humour to your life. Meet people who are friendly, lighthearted, problem solvers and progressive thinkers. Indulging in a hobby or two once or twice a week, takes away the pain and suffering of everyday living, if you don't like what you do and whom you interact with. 5. Attitude of gratitude: each day count your blessings and see how fortunate you are and what you have in life, rather than what you don't have in your life. This will help you to feel happier, content and satisfied with what is working in life and take your mind away from what is not working in your life. If you have any queries, please contact me on private chat.

Me bahut jyada smoking krta hu. Me ise chhodna chahta hu. Ye aadat nahi jati .please help me.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, Please try to stop smoking at the earliest. It has many health benefits in the long run. When you stop suddenly, you may get withdrawal symptoms like restlessness, irritability, lack of concentration, increased hunger, sleep disturbance, headache, impatience, anxiety, depression, etc. If you have them please don’t get back to smoking, take nicotine gum or lozenge or patch. They are available in all medical shops. You don’t need a prescription from doctors. Use 2 mg gum if you smoke less than 25 cigarettes/day. Use 4 mg gum if you smoke more than 25 cigarettes/day. First 6 weeks, use 1 gum every 1 – 2 hours. Reduce it in week 7 – 9 to one gum every 2 – 4 hours. In week 10 – 12, reduce it further to 1 gum every 4 -8 hours. By 3 months, you will be able to stop both cigarettes and gum fully without any withdrawal symptoms. Please feel confident that you can do it and give yourself some gift for doing it like vacation or books or new mobile. Smoking is a chronic relapsing condition like diabetes and B.P. So please don'€™t worry if you restart smoking. Start all over again to stop. You will learn the situations that make you smoke and avoid them. Please think of health benefits and money saved often. Plan how to avoid relapsing situations, like smoking friends, along with alcohol, stressful feeling or depression. Delay, drink, deep breathe, distract and discuss are the helpful tips. Increase of non smoking zones, gift yourself for stopping smoking. Even chewing cinnamon may delay. Please remember that the urge to smoke comes and goes like waves. Delay and see whether it goes away. It will like a passing cloud.

It is possible you are suffering from social anxiety. Try practicing in the mirror before you are in a social situation. Also use relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, progressive muscular relaxation and yoga. If the anxiety is overwhelming and debilitating, consult a psychiatrist.
