Empty Nest Syndrome

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
Empty Nest Syndrome

Growing up is a fact of life and while parents would love their children to be with them, it isn’t always possible. Although in India, children do tend to stay with parents, an increasing trend among the urban population shows that younger populations have to move out of their parent’s homes to other places in search of work, opportunity and career growth. This leaves parents alone and coping with loneliness due to the absence of their children, which may lead to a problem akin to depression, known as ‘empty nest syndrome’.

What Exactly is Empty Nest Syndrome?

If the children have grown up and moved out of the house due to career opportunities or after marriage, parents may find themselves very lonely within their house. However, you should remember that this is not a clinical problem but more of a situation that is being increasingly encountered and has been classified as a mass phenomenon rather than just being a disorder. The problems that parents mostly encounter are –

  1. Lack of constant companionship.

  2. Missing the children and being a part of their daily lives.

  3. Worrying about the safety of children when they are not with them.

  4. Missing a purpose in life.

Measuring the impact of the empty nest syndrome-

As it has been described and categorized as a phenomenon, it isn’t a form of disorder with a bad side only. Empty nest syndrome tends to have both negative as well as positive effects, if it can be channelized properly. Some of the possibilities of both are mentioned here.

Negative effects include vulnerability to –

  1. Marital conflicts

  2. Identity crisis

  3. Depression

  4. Alcoholism

However, positives can come out of this as well such as –

  1. Opportunities for the parents to reconnect with each other as the children are out of the picture.

  2. Actively look to improve the quality of their marriage and resolve conflicts.

  3. Take up new activities and hobbies and support each other with that.

  4. Dedicate more time to each other and cultivate new skills.

Coping with Empty Nest Syndrome-

Some of the things you can try to counter the effects of empty nest syndrome are –

  1. Cultivating positivity: This is the hardest part to do as negative emotions may flood your senses. It is important that you try to stay positive and think that it is in the best interest of your child.

  2. Adjust your time according to your children’s availability: Don’t brood over the fact that your children may not be calling you as per your convenience. Instead of try to align your routine so that you can talk to them when their schedule allows it. This way, you will get a lot of time in your hands.

  3. Actively look for support: If you are missing your children and it is significantly affecting your life, go and actively look for support. Connect or reconnect with your neighbors, friends or relatives and try spending time with them.

  4. Ensure you keep in touch: Keep in touch with your children regularly and ensure a routine of calling and communicating is established so that you are regularly updated, which helps in reducing loneliness and longing.

Sugar mixed with water and lemon juice will help in exfoliating your face and offer natural bleach to your face. The lemon juice used will help in lightening the color of your facial hair. Ingredients: •2 tablespoons of sugar •10 tablespoons of water •2 teaspoons of lemon juice •One small bowl Method: •Mix sugar and water in the small bowl. •Once the sugar solution is ready, add lemon juice into the bowl and mix well. •Now apply this sugar and lemon mixture on your face in the direction of hair growth on the face. •Allow this mixture to rest on your face for 15 to 20 minutes. •Wash it off with water after 20 minutes, by rubbing the mixture gently with your hands. •Repeat this process two to three times a week to see a reduction in facial hair.

Masturbation does not reduce the penis size. The penis grows through puberty up until around 20-years-old. The size you have is mainly down to the genes you inherited from parents and grandparents. The penis extends temporarily during erection and then returns to it's flaccid state.

Psychologist,
I am suffering from agoraphobia panic attack anxiety last 2 year I taking regularly allopathic medicine but not improve.
Allopathy medicines will only do symptomatic relief work but not re obe the cause of the illness. Panic and anxiety occurs when people feel unsafe and threatened in social situations thus refusing to socialise. Counselling can help you by slowly empowering you to integrate back I to the society as this is a basic need for humans. The counsellor will help you to work through the outdated thoughts and beliefs which create the panic attack and replace them with more helpful and updated thoughts and beliefs which will make you feel in control ant confident from within. A swot analysis will help you to discover your own personal strengths and limitations which you can use and sharpen to feel and behave more confidently. 2. Having a realistic picture of yourself and of people around you will help you calm down as well. 3. Doing deep breathing exercises and pranayams are very helpful for people with anxiety and panic. It will help you to remain calm and assess the situation more realistically. 4. Gradual exposure to the thratening situation under the guidance of the counsellor will help you to reduce anxiety and stress. 5. Exercise exercise exercise. This is most important for you to feel confident and good aboit yourself. Initially you can choose a lonely place but gradually you will need to exercise with fellow human beings because we can't thrive in isolation and can die of loneliness. 6. Healthy die which is low on sugars and processed foods is a must. High sugar, fats and processed foods are linked to anxiety and panic attacks as it elevates the blood sugar causing irritability and anxiety.

Diabetes doesn't mean that one can have extra energy. But it means your blood having more sugar, which can not be usable for the cells. You need to control sugar level.

Dear, shampoos and oils do not make much change because, they hardly penetrate layers of skin, where roots (live part of hair) are present. Instead concentrate on food, if all other factors are fine. -protein rich diet, dry fruits-almonds, dates.
