Bowel Resection Surgery - Facts You Should be Aware of

IAGES, MS, MBBS
General Surgeon, Noida
Bowel Resection Surgery - Facts You Should be Aware of

The bowel is a very important part of your body within the digestive system as it plays a vital role in the absorption of nutrients and minerals within your body as well as excreting toxic matter. The bowel contains the small bowel or small intestine as well as the large bowel or the large intestine. However, parts of the bowel may be infected or damaged in such a manner that they may need to be removed in order to save further worsening. Thus, the removal of sections of the bowels is known as bowel resection surgery.

How is bowel resection surgery performed?

In this procedure, sections of either the large intestine or the small intestine are removed which have either become diseased, infected or have malignant growths within them. The doctors and surgeons first identify the sections that need to be removed and then perform the surgery wherein a section of the tissue is excised and then two ends of the bowel are stitched together to form a new section of continuous small intestine or large intestine.

Types of bowel resection
There are two types of bowel resection, namely small bowel resection performed on the small intestine and large bowel resection performed on the large intestine. The indications for both of them are mentioned below:
Small Bowel resection: Some of the cases wherein small bowel resection may be required are as follows:

  1. Cancerous or benign polyps or growth
  2. Precancerous growths and polyps
  3. Damage to the small intestine due to injuries
  4. Congenital defects in the small intestine
  5. Blockages in the intestine
  6. Growth of ulcers, bleeding, and infection within the small intestine
  7. Infections within the intestines
  8. Other disorders of the small intestine

Large bowel resection: Large bowel resection is also carried out due to many of the same reasons as mentioned above. However, some of the specific reasons for large bowel resection are mentioned below:

  1. Colon cancer
  2. Diverticulitis, disorder that specifically affects the large intestine
  3. Bowel inflammation or ulcerative colitis
  4. Abnormal twisting of the bowel also known as volvulus
  5. Intestines which slide into another section of the intestine; also known as intussusception

Risks of the bowel resection
Like any other surgery, bowel resection also carries its own risks just as any other form of surgery. Some of the common risks of bowel resection are –

  1. Adverse reaction to anesthesia
  2. Infections
  3. Heart attacks or strokes during the operation
  4. Infections
  5. Excessive bleeding among others

Specific risks for large and small bowel resections are mentioned as follows:

  1. Small bowel resection: Certain common risks include accumulation of pus in the abdomen, internal bleeding within the intestine after surgery, diarrhea, infection of the incision area and the stitched area breaking open among others
  2. Large bowel resection: In this case, tissues protruding through the cut causing an incisional hernia is the most common element of risk. Nearby organs may be damaged as well; scar tissue, problems with the passage of material within the colon among others are some of the other complications.

However, these issues occur rarely and resections are performed very successfully and quite regularly by surgeons.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult the doctor and ask a free question.

You can go for following remedy it will help you mix triphala powder in water. Keep it away for half an hour. Add a table spoon of pure honey. Have this in early morning daily. Raw onion dish eaten daily also can fix the matter. Have sweet soup made up of black gram. Combine black gram, rice, wheat and long pepper in equal quantities. Grind them to form powder. Fry the mixture in pure clarified butter so cook it with milk. Eat when adding sugar to that. Causes: consistent with ayurvedic concepts, nightfall is because of vata irritation. Quickness is the primary nature of vata. Its affectability is expanded by over considering sex. So for the curing of nightfall vata ought to be cured and adjusted. Overindulgence in sexual considering, constipation, unhealthy diet, low water intake are likewise a percentage of the fundamental driver of the nightfall. This is very helpful.

My name is Anita. And am suffering from piles since 7 year. Too much blood comes daily pls help me out.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Piles are haemorrhoids that become inflamed. Haemorrhoids are masses, clumps, cushions of tissue in the anal canal - they are full of blood vessels, support tissue, muscle and elastic fibers. Piles can be of various sizes and may be internal (inside the anus) or external ones (outside the anus). Typically, internal piles occur from 2 to 4cm above the opening of the anus. External piles (perianal hematoma) occur on the outside edge of the anus. The internal ones are much more common. Symptomatic haemorrhoids affect at least half the population at some time in their lives before the age of 50. In the majority of cases, piles are effectively treated with over-the-counter medications, a good fluid intake, and by following a diet high in fibre. In severe cases, the piles may have to be surgically removed. About 10% of patients who go and see their doctor about piles eventually require surgical intervention. Internal haemorrhoids are classified into four grades.  Grade 1 - there are small inflammations, usually inside the lining of the anus. They are not visible  Grade 2 - larger than grade 1 haemorrhoids, but also inside the anus. When passing a stool, they may get pushed out, but return unaided  Grade 3 - often called 'prolapsed haemorrhoids'; these appear outside the anus. The patient may feel them hanging out. They can be pushed back in if the patient presses with their finger  Grade 4 - these cannot be pushed back in and need to be treated by a doctor. They are large and stay outside the anus all the time. External haemorrhoids are called perianal hematoma. These are small lumps that are located on the outside edge of the anus. They are very itchy and can be painful if a blood clot forms inside (thrombosed external haemorrhoid). Thrombosed external haemorrhoid requires medical treatment straight away PILES OCCUR when the blood vessels around the anus and in the rectum will stretch under pressure and may swell or bulge. Inflamed veins (haemorrhoids) can develop when pressure increases in the lower rectum. This may be due to:  Chronic constipation9  Chronic diarrhea10  Lifting heavy weights11  Pregnancy12  Straining when passing a stool.13 The tendency to develop haemorrhoids may also be inherited. The risk of developing piles grows with age Treatments for piles In the majority of cases, piles resolve on their own without the need for any treatment. Treatments can help significantly reduce the discomfort and itching that many patients experience. Diet - piles can be caused by too much straining when doing bowel movements, which is the result of constipation. A change in diet can help keep the stools regular and soft. This involves eating more fiber, such as fruit and vegetables, or switching your cereal breakfast to bran. Water is the best drink, and the patient may be advised to increase his/her water consumption. Some experts say too much caffeine is not good. Simple things you can do yourself to help prevent piles:10  Try not to strain when you go to the toilet  Avoid laxatives  Exercise. Ointments, creams, pads and other OTC medications - there are some over-the-counter (OTC) medications which help soothe the redness and swelling around the anus area. Some of them contain witch hazel, hydrocortisone, or some other active ingredient which can relieve symptoms of itching and pain Surgery - used for particularly large piles, or grades 3 or 4 haemorrhoids. Generally, surgery is used if other procedures were not effective. Sometimes surgery is done on an outpatient basis - the patient goes home after the procedure.

I am Arun I am suffering from asthma problem I am taking medicines since 2 years but there is no relief.

BHMS, Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Medicine
Homeopath,
I am Arun I am suffering from asthma problem I am taking medicines since 2 years but there is no relief.
A respiratory condition marked by attacks of spasm in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing. It is usually connected to allergic reaction or other forms of hypersensitivity Description To understand asthma, it helps to know how the airways work. The airways are tubes that carry air into and out of your lungs. People who have asthma have inflamed airways. The inflammation makes the airways swollen and very sensitive. The airways tend to react strongly to certain inhaled substances. When the airways react, the muscles around them tighten. This narrows the airways, causing less air to flow into the lungs. The swelling also can worsen, making the airways even narrower. Cells in the airways might make more mucus than usual. Mucus is a sticky, thick liquid that can further narrow the airways. This chain reaction can result in asthma symptoms. Symptoms can happen each time the airways are inflamed. Cause • Allergy • Tobacco Smoke • Environmental Factor • Obesity • Pregnancy • Stress • Genes • Airway Hyperactivity • Atopy Allopathic and Homoeopathic Treatment o Most people need to take more than one type of medication to control asthma. O Not everyone with asthma takes the same Homoeopathic medication. There are many different asthma medications and they come in many forms: pills. O Allopathic medications are often divided into two groups: bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory agents. O There's no allopathic medication to cure asthma completely. Hello, as you have described your one tube is removed due to ectopic, now you got pcos too. From my point of view inspite of pcos there are chances of conception but for that menses needed to be regular. How is status of your periods? how many days they remain? scanty or profuse? in how many days interval periods comes? answer to all above questions are needed. How is your status of exercise? as you seems to be overweight as per your height. Homoeopathy offers solution to the pcos, for that you need to consult homoeopath who will guide you time to time. 1. Start exercise daily, 4-5 km brisk walk 2. Reduce rice, carbohydrate rich diet tend to increase weight. Question is how urgent you want to have perfect weight or conceive. 3. Start homoeopathic medicines. Thanks.
