Please suggest. Thanks.

Five food groups namely  cereals (like rice, wheat in any form, oats in any form ), pulses  (like any dal), vegetables, fruits and animal protein  (meat, fish, egg, milk in any form )should be present in adequate amount in the food of your baby. Basic principles of feeding are 1) it should be acceptable I. E. Kids should like eating it. 2) tolerable i.e. After  eating if baby develop abdominal distension,  vomiting, loose stool,  rash that means your baby can't tolerate the product.  3) appropriate consistency I. E. Porridge like with gradual change so that by the age of 2 normal adult foods can be given to the kids.  4) all the food groups should be present in the menu of whole day. Take her weight every month to see for weight gain.

My seven years old daughter's eyes are always looking tired and little bit yellowish. But she is very active. Some times she feels headache also. I tried all types of treatment viz allopathic, home, Siddha. None of them have worked. What is the solution?

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Kolkata
Tired looking eyes and bit of yellow but otherwise active child can be due to many causes including jaundice, thyroid problem, malnutrition, exhaustion and even in genetic component which may be absolutely normal. You can try for a good multivitamin formulation along with good nutritious diet and increasing water intake. Even then you can do some blood test like lft, tsh, cbc, urine r/e.

My daughter is 7 years old. She often gets fever. It starts suddenly, and increases up to 103-104F. She is vaccinated properly .Now we are using homeopathic medicines. It gives better results to her when compared to allopathy. But we are unable to control the temperature. It gradually increases up to 103 F and reduces up to 100F at early morning and again raises upto 103 by evenings. This condition remains for at least 3 days .later the temperature goes down to below normal and she becomes very weak .We consulted many doctors. All blood test reports are normal. But there is no improvement . She is studying 2nd STD and she is very active and intelligent too. What do I do for her? How do I know the actual reason behind her health problem? Please suggest me. The reports are as follows. Complete blood picture (method: Capillary Photometric) Hb : 12.9 MCV : 77 MCHC : 35.7 ESR : 13 Remaining values are normal. Vit. B12 : 795 PG/ml UsCRP. : 6.9 mg/l Widal : negative QBC : negative Urine : 2-3 pus cells in HPF.

Frequent high grade fever without definit localisation symptoms like cough, coryza, altered stool are mostly due to viral infections. Another important cause specially in female child can be due to uti. The typical symptoms of uti like burning sensation and increased frequency can be absent in children. Please perform urine culture and sensitivity test done next time she develops fever and before starting antibiotic therapy.

My son who is 5 years gets lot of burps and has gas. Occasionally complaints of stomach pain. Any home remedy please.

Gas formation may be due to maldigestion of some particular food item. Its best to avoid such identified food items. If not possible them digestive enzymes or simethicone after foods might help.

She is a high risk baby with stormy neonatal period. What you need to know is that your baby is likely to have neurological deficit for long term. The magnitude of neurological dysfunction and severity will be evident later on. But the most positive part is that brain has huge potential of neuronal plasticity during initial period of life, say first 2 years. With developmentally supportive nursery and good physiotherapy and occupational therapy you baby can perform her best. So you think about the positive side and try your level best.

He is suffering from constipation.  he should be on a good fibre rich diet. Give plenty of water.  regular laxative if needed along with a good diet plan. As constipation is a chronic problem in most cases and most common cause is habitual constipation.  You must ensure a regular bowel time after a drink irrespective of passage of stool. He should be sitting for sometime say 10_ 15 minutes in a fixed time daily in a Indian style toilet. She appears  to be a fussy eater. Most importantly you need to be patient with her. Don't shout or scream while feeding her. Try to make her feeding time fun or playtime. After not giving any food for 3 hrs at least make him sit with the food he likes (solid foods not pastes or liquids) with spoon and katori or fork. Let him at least play with the food for some time. If he likes milk a lot then try to give solid like plain rice, oats. Chatu. With the pediasure You can have a deal with him. He will take 1 sip milk and 1 bite of something  This way he will learn to chew Threptin  biscuits are good to taste and are rich in protein (casein) Avoid giving him chips fast food Makes small pieces of food  and ask  her to try just 1 bite. If he likes the taste she will have another. If he likes chicken. Give him chicken in different  ways. Introduce him to egg. Boiled or omelette whatever he likes. Play with him till he feels tired. Playing running will improve digestion. Don't loose temper You can give him  one egg a day Cucumbers made into small pieces will help  with problem of flatulence. Children have to deal with new  food, new habits. So they act out. Do not get flustered if he criesmakes a scene. Sit quietly, go to another room, ignore him. He will learn that bad behaviour  will not allow him to get her own way. I know it's very difficult but keep trying as that's the best you can give him. Pain  abdomen  may be due indigestion earmarked, gastritis. Good hand hygiene: Regular nail trimming Washing hand after each toilet visit. And before taking any food in any form Also take care of drinking water quality. Test Adviced: CBC with AEC Stool and urine R/E, M/E USG abdomen Share the reports if any Kindly do the follo You can check out the Health blog I manage with my wife. It has many helpful tips. My baby girl is 4 months old. From past 4 days she is having fever of 100 degree. Though she was urinating in every 1-2 hours but she was urinating very less. So we consulted a doctor and he prescribed medicines such as Pro wel, apex-p and ofloaxin since she was passing out green stools from past few days. We also undergo a urine test and it is found to be normal. What my concern is from past few days she is drinking very less breast milk. She sucks for only 30 secs to one minute and then she refuses to take it even after burping. She screams when she looks at my breast I tried feeding her through spoon and she is ok with it but not with sucking Can you please help since manual extraction of milk is a time consuming and difficult process.

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Kolkata
Breast milk production and secretion is mostly depend on overall wellbeing and mental status of mother. First of all you need to relax and try to take adequate rest. Do any relaxation technology which is suitable for you. Drink plenty of water and take half to one glass of water 15 minutes before feeding. As your baby is sick and passing loose stool she might be thirsty but easily fatigued. So she needs frequent feeding.

It is a good thing that your boy is active and otherwise healthy. His weight may or may not be fine for his age. But most important thing is that he should regularly gain weight as per expected. This you can get in your vaccination card where you will find a growth chart.  you can plot his weight against her age at regular intervals like say 3 monthly and see whether he is gaining weight normally or not. Normally a kid of his age should gain approximately 2 kg per year.

Most of the lactose free formula are derived from soya (most of which is genetically modified ).So though short term use of soya milk is OK but prolonged use is strictly prohibited. There are other casein based formula in the market. You should try those. And try to decrease the amount of milk consumption by that time.

Burning sensation in the upper part of abdomen and central chest Can be due to gastritis, dyspepsia. Avoid giving her oily, spicy and junk food. Try to give regular and bland diet. If it doesn't help you should visit a pediatrician .

She is suffering from constipation. She should be on a good fibre rich diet. Give plenty of water. As she has not passed stool for last 12 days. Hello doctor.

Kissing in the cheek once is unlikely to infect your baby with the germ. Sneezing. Cough and prolonged contact usually transmit the organism. But still there is a remote possibility of transmission of the infection. So you monitor the baby any sign of infection. The same organism may cause other disease also.

Often newborns have various skin pigmentation which clear up as they grow older. Skin colour is mostly genetic and can to some extent be brightened by healthy diet, good skin care routine, and sun protection. It is not advisable to use skin brightening agents (chemical or natural) at this age. The newborn skin is sensitive and should only have hypoallergenic baby safe products used. Dermadew/nmf are good baby safe skin care products which will improve quality of skin. Don't worry about skin colour. A healthy skin is a beautiful skin. Enjoy the cuddles with your baby. Hope this helps.

Preserving stem cell (cord blood) is a good thing. But the so much hyped benefits are not absolutely true. Research works are going on, so if affordability is not a barrier, you should go for it.
