Refractive Errors (Having Glasses)

M.S. Ophthalmology
Ophthalmologist, Vadodara
Refractive Errors (Having Glasses)

There is a great deal of confusion, wrong beliefs, and stigma attached to having or using glasses.

Why does one need to use glasses?

Simply to make the rays from objects of interest fall on Retina so that the objects are clearly seen. If eyes are  long(myopia), focus may fall in front of retina causing blurred image.Appropriate minus glasses will bring the focus on retina. If eyes are short (hyoermetropia), focus may fall behind the retina. Appropriate plus lenses bring the focus back on retina. If eye curvatures are more or less(astigmatism), appropriate cylindrical glasses will help focus image on retina.

Having long, short or differently curved eyes is a natural variation like some people are long, some are short, some are pear shaped, some are hour glass etc etc.

So don't worry if you have glasses. In most people it is not a disease or is not indicative of any eye "weakness" as most people tend to believe. Roughly about 50% of people have glasses and they are as normal as the other 50% who may not have glasses. Best of best people in the world from all fields have glasses like in sports- Clive Lloyd, Anil Kumble, in show-biz Aishvarya rai, Sushmita Sen, top scholars, top politicians, top doctors and the list is long.

Simply use glasses or contact lenses as you wish and as suitable to your life style, work, age. You may also undergo LASIK after establishing real need and safety for you. But don't think you are curing anything because , in the first place, there is no disease. Choosing one of these options is a customized process, best done with the help of your trusted doctor and not by what your friend, neighbour or advertisements say. Each of these options - glasses, lenses, surgery- has  a deep science which is dynamic.

It is also good to get your glasses assessed by an Eye Doctor (Ophthalmologist) or a qualified Optometrist and just on any autorefractor by any untrained optician. Optician's job is to make glasses, not assess them.

Sties - How To Treat It?

Sties - How To Treat It?

A stye is a tiny red bump in the eyes which looks like a pimple on the outer edge of the eye. This condition usually causes a lot of discomfort and a significant amount of pain. This pimple generally forms when the oil glands in the eyes get clogged with dirt and grime as well as excess oil, which created blockage due to the accumulation of bacteria. Too much tear production as well as swelling and pain are the most common symptoms of this condition, which must be shown to an ophthalmologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Read on to find out the various ways in which you can treat this condition:

  • Well cleaned hands: Always ensure that your hands are properly cleaned and sanitised, as the hands can spread the maximum amount of germs and bacteria to your eyes. The hands are usually the most overworked part of the body which we use for doing a variety of tasks that involve touching, gripping, pulling, pushing and running them along a variety of surfaces. This causes a build-up of germs and bacteria on the hands which can easily get transferred to the face or the eyes, as one touches these areas constantly. So, it is important to keep your hands clean at all time to ensure that the stye does not get worse.
  • Avoid makeup: When you are suffering from a stye, it is imperative to keep your eyes clean and clear. For this, you must avoid using makeup until the stye gets fully cured as the makeup may irritate the eye and the particles may further block the pimple. Also, you may want to avoid wearing contact lenses unless the stye gets better, and stick to glasses instead so that there is nothing in the eye that will obstruct its treatment.
  • Warm washcloth: This treatment will soothe the eye and help in sanitising the area with the warmth of the washcloth. Also, this kind of treatment for a few minutes every day will ensure that the swelling also reduces. Further, one must ensure that the washcloth is clean and lint free so that no dirt escapes into the eyes.
  • Avoid squeezing: One must avoid squeezing the stye as this action can make it even worse. Further, if the pimple bursts, the liquid or pus within can easily infect the eye and the area around it. The stye should be allowed to drain out on its own, or you can visit an eye doctor who will help in draining it out.

Getting professional help to treat the stye with medication and ointments as well as medical procedures is always more helpful.

Hi. Itchy n redness in the eye at this age can be due to dryness in the eye. I need to do a basic eye examination and then decide cause of dryness and treat accordingly. Till that time 1) avoid touching your eyes 2) start lubricants eyedrops daily 3 to 4 times daily. 3) wear protective glasses while in sun.

You. Have not mentioned your age, if you are above 20 yrs, then you should not worry at all because -1d & -0.5d has no value & there is no chance of further increase. There is lots of advantage of this type of myopia after age of 40 yrs. I will never advise you LASIK for this type of myopic power, with regards.

Cataract Surgery

Senior Consultant Surgeon, Specialist In Refractive Lasik Surgery, MS Ophthalmology, Phacoemulsification & Multifocal Implantation, Occuloplasty Surgeon
Ophthalmologist, Delhi
Cataract Surgery

A cataract usually forms in the eyes due to clouding of the naturally clear lens that coats the eyes. This coating is usually a matter of age advancement or any other injury that the eyes may have sustained. It may also be a birth defect that a baby may be born with. There are various ways to deal with this debilitating condition.

One of the methods of treatment includes cataract surgery. Read on to find out more about this form of treatment:

  • Procedure: During this surgery, the ophthalmologist will remove the cloudy lens and clean it before replacing it with a man-made lens. The technique followed for this procedure is known as phacoemulsification which involves a small cut or incision for the cataract surgery. The incision helps the doctor in liquefying and then vacuuming the centre portion of the lens, which is slightly harder than the rest of the lens.
  • Device: The doctor will usually administer anaesthesia first and then make the tiny incision on one side of the cornea. Thereafter, an instrument or device will be inserted through this opening to send out ultrasonic vibrations to the eye. These vibrations will help in breaking the lens into tiny pieces. These fragments will be removed with the help of a suction that will go in through the tiny cut. This cut may also be made with the help of a laser beam.
  • New Lens: Once the fragments of the old lens have been cleared, the doctor will go about the process of inserting the new man made lens which is usually made up of clear plastic, acrylic or even silicon, and is known as IOL or intraocular lens. This process is generally termed as intraocular lens implantation.
  • Improved Vision: With the help of the new lens, the patient will now enjoy better vision and a visible decline in the symptoms of the cataract including problems in night driving.
  • Convenient: This procedure usually takes about an hour and is an outpatient procedure. It is a completely safe procedure where numbing drops are placed on the eye so as to reduce any pain significantly. The doctor will usually give you a novocaine injection around the eye. Also, cataracts from both eyes will not be removed on the same day, and the doctor will schedule you for cataract removal from the second eye for another day.
  • Aftermath: After the surgery is over, it is normal to feel some amount of irritation in the eye. If this irritation is persistent, you must see a doctor about it.

Painkillers like acetaminophen and ibuprofen can be used to recover from the pain after the surgery. Ask an ophthalmologist about other measures.

Know Everything About Corneal Ulcer

Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery, MS - Ophthalmology
Ophthalmologist, Panipat
Know Everything About Corneal Ulcer

Anterior most transparent layer of the eye is called cornea. It is an extremely useful layer for refraction and protection of eye.

Any trauma, foreign body or chemical etc can invade the integrity of this layer and can be invaded by bacteria, fungus or virus, resulting in the corneal ulcer. Sometimes, due to hypoxia induced by contact lenses too can result in a corneal ulcer.

Depending on clinical presentation, a doctor diagnoses the cause of the ulcer and starts the therapy. Since the transparency of cornea is very important, a doctor may start with very intensive therapy depending upon the cause and extent of infection. In spite of repeated frequent checkups, if proper and intensive therapy is not given, the ulcer can progress and can cause collection of pus in the eye (anterior chamber) which if not attended properly, can cause the infection to travel into the interior of the eyeball (vitreous chamber) resulting in total blindness. The ulcer can become deeper and lead to perforation of the cornea, causing severe damage to the eye and may require removal of eyeball also.

Generally, fungal ulcers are more dangerous and occur mostly in rainy season or with a minor trauma also resulting from an injury with a vegetative matter like leaf, wood, plants etc.

It is imperative that a case of corneal ulcer be diagnosed promptly and very intensive and proper treatment is given to save the disfigurement of the eye and total irreparable loss - blindness.

At times, with topical eye drops, oral therapy also has to be given. Injections in the eye may also be required in severe cases. Culture sensitivity also has to be done in severe cases to identify the causative organism for proper treatment.

In extremely severe cases, we may have to perform, therapeutic keratoplasty.

Conclusion: Corneal Ulcer is a serious challenging problem with the potentiality to cause total and irreparable blindness and must be attended promptly by a very expert ophthalmologist to save the eye.

How can increase eye sight and remove glasses? And what power of eye sight is danger for 24 years man.

How can increase eye sight and remove glasses? And what power of eye sight is danger for 24 years man.
There is no medication or food for improving eyesight or to get rid of glasses. If not interested in glasses then you can try a. Contact lens b. Lasik laser as your age is now 23 years so your number will not increase now whether you wear glasses or not as number becomes stable at age of 18-20 yrs. Having said that I advise you to eat balanced diet including green vegetables and seasonal fruits for keeping eyes and body healthy. If you are not comfortable with contact lens then go for lasik. Lasik is a very easy and painless procedure. If you want to get rid of glasses then go for lasik.

Lasik Surgery: 5 Benefits of it!

MBBS, MS - Ophthalmology, Diploma in Ophthalmology , Fellowship in Cornea and Anterior Segment
Ophthalmologist, Ahmedabad
Lasik Surgery: 5 Benefits of it!

LASIK stands for Laser In-situ Keratomileusis. This is a common eye surgery that helps in correcting vision problems. During this procedure, the cornea of the eye is cut across by a medical expert to raise the tissues and reshape them to correct vision. LASIK is suitable for patients who have shortsightedness, long sightedness or who suffer from astigmatism.

Here are the 5 benefits that a LASIK surgery offers:

1. Improved vision - A study reveals that 95% of the people who underwent this surgery achieved uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40 and 85% of the people achieved 20/20 vision. This procedure ensures that a patient achieves enhanced vision.

2. Quick results and recovery - This surgery enables you to return to your normal schedule immediately the day after the surgery. You can have clear and improved vision within a day.

3. Long- lasting outcomes - A minimum timeframe of 3 months is required for the eyes to adjust, after which LASIK results are permanently noticeable in a patient. No follow up procedures are required unless something wrong went with the surgery. The patient will continue to have improved vision unless there is any normal loss due to illness or aging.

4. No need of glasses - You no longer require glasses as your vision turns to normal post-LASIK surgery.

5. Goodbye contact lenses - LASIK surgery will help eliminate the need for contacts. You will be able to avoid all the problems pertaining to wearing a contact lens, including lens solution.
